Malware Bytes gives me a popup warning on some sites, and completely blocks others, and I've NEVER gotten so much as a warning from them on this site.

All the more reason to run an ad-blocker.

Adblock Plus is free, it WORKS (including removing all the annoying upload carp on Photobucket AND commercials on YouTube), it's available for all the popular browsers, and it only takes one or two clicks to install it.

Okay, I did this this afternoon. It seemed to download and install easily, no problems.

My surfing since has been different in no way whatsoever. All sites look and run just exactly as they always have for me.

The adblock didn't load any kind of icon, and I can't find it on my applications list or Task Manager. It's sitting there in the file where I downloaded it, but I don't know if it's actually running or not.

If you're running Chrome, there's a little red stop-sign-shaped icon at the top rt of the nav bar. It will show a white number in it to let you know how many ads are being blocked at any given time.

I'm listening to talk radio through Chrome even as we speak, but there's no stop sign.

I mainly use the AOL browser. Every so often I get a popup about a security certificate. If I click no on that, it goes ahead to the link but there's a yellow bar across the top of the screen. But all that's been "normal" for me for years, never had any kind of problem with that.

One thing anti-virus users often seem to overlook...your AV program is only good if it's updated with new "definitions" frequently.

For all intents and purposes, think of rooms full of computer geeks constantly looking for new strings of code that identify new malicious web presences, and these are what your AV program gets when it "updates"...the identifying bits of code that will alert it to a contaminated site or app. Each AV provider has its own army of geeks looking for stuff constantly, and how good they are, and how often your AV program updates, both define how effective your AV program is.

Norton and some others I've used seemed to be real resource-hogs, slowing the system down maddeningly for updates. Avast was great for a long time, but got slower and slower. When I switched to the current one, the updates occur seamlessly, and bad things are routinely flagged and stopped.

A word to the possibly unwary:there are a lot of bugs lurking on Ebay auction sites too.

A good anti-virus program is also a must.

I can highly recommend this one. It's about $70 / per year and works better than anything else I've tried to date.

Bill Adblock Plus says it can read and change data with websites you visit. Have you had any changes???

Hmmm. I'm sorry Carl. I really don't understand the question. Let me do some more reading about AdBlock and get back to you. :D

EDIT: My understanding at this time is that it's probably legalese boilerplate for a CYA scenario getting specific permission to "read and change" data because that's how it smells an ad, by reading data, and blocks an ad from displaying on your computer, by changing data.

In effect, you're simply giving AdBlock specific permission to do what it does, so you can't sue AdBlock for doing what it does.

I've been running AdBlock for quite a while with no problems of any kind, no lost data, no changes I've been aware of...so that's all I have for you for now.

PS. One additional thing I CAN tell you is that AdBlock disrupts functionality of some sites. They refuse to allow access to their content if you have AdBlock enabled and try to force you to make exceptions to let their carp ads play. No problem for me...I just go to another site to get the same info.

there is another app I run in conjunction with malwarebytes, rogue killer finds things that malwarebytes does not find.

this doesn't mean malwarebytes is bad, just focused on other areas.

Rogue killer (by Adlice software) saved me from having to wipe my home theater PC after it got some nasty bug that malwarebytes found but didn't seem to be able to remove.

Holy Cow! Rogue Killer found 70 some things that Malwarebytes didn't see. Unfortunately for me, RK locks up just seconds after the screen comes up with the files it found. I have run the scan about 5 times and have been able to get a few removed a few times before I get the "Not Responding" message. I'm down to about 36 left, but I'm tired of running scans right now.

Ok you computer guys. I don't per say use any anti virus software to counter any virus or or any other malware getting on my os. I do have a program that will scan my drive and report of any possible threats in a file. I check the file every so often and remove anything I feel may harm my computer. Am I in trouble? Should I be doing something more?

have you tried running it in safe mode yet?

Malwarebytes also has an "anti-root kit" utility but I don't know if it's free or a pay utility. That is the utility that found some issues on my home theater PC but didn't seem to be able to permanently clean them like RougeKiller did.

that's really hard to respond to without knowing how you use the interwebs.

Malwarebytes can be used for free but the premium version gives better protection all the time, RogueKiller has a free version also but the premium version has better tools/settings that make it easier for the "less savvy" computer users to handle.

I serf off and on all day long and use it to pay bills, etc. Let me add that my scanner program has informed me that I have 7 trojans in my firefox browser.

if you use your computer to pay bills and have no active protection then you are basically living in a glass house on the internet and waving your personal data to anyone that cares to look at it.

that may sound alarming but identity theft is rampant, everyone that connects to the internet (in any way) should really consider having some kind of protection.

or maybe you're just trolling here.

I haven't made any accusation, merely speculated a possibility.

I suggest you take advantage of the free utilities posted in this thread... unless you are okay with trojans on your computer.

It did the same thing only slower to lock up. When it finishes the scan a window pops up with the things it found, it also opens up a website, it's at the point that the site opens that it locks up. In safe mode it couldn't open the site, but still locked up. It was the delay on opening the site in safe mode that let me realize that is where the problem could be.

Kinda reminds me of what happened when I used System Mechanic. I used it for a while--couple years, maybe--and even liked it well enough (it really cleaned out and speeded up my system) so much I got the pay version. It worked great, until one day, it wouldn't any more. Wouldn't update, wouldn't fix anything, and I think it would actually lock everything up. But it was fabulous while it lasted.

the Adlice techs may be able to help resolve the lock up issue, when the scan finishes on my system, it brings up a website for solutions to remove PUP's (potentially unwanted programs).

are there any other antivirus programs running at the same time which may be blocking roguekiller attempts to cure the problems found?

figuring out the cause of the lockup would be helpful, I have not had that happen in win7 nor win10.
