MrObsessive Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 Interesting info about eBay. I'll have to remember that when I go searching for something there. I don't fault folks for not wanting to buy from there but OTOH, it's the reality of what's out there now. I have to admit I've found some things there that I would have NEVER got anywhere else, and at reasonable prices at that.
Psychographic Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 Scott, what HOBBY SHOP sir ??????? PLEASE sir , FIND me a HOBBY SHOP ANYWHERE in Richmond Virginia . Yeah go ahead , bein as YOU seem to have the answers .... sheeesshhhhh.........You make no sense at all. You say don't buy from ebay because it ruins the hobby, but yet complain that you have no hobby shops around to buy from. How many other people have no hobby shops within a reasonable drive? So what does that leave them? Mail order and the internet, which ebay falls into that category. I have no problem with you but your rants on ebay are getting tired.
Tom Geiger Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 I've never had a problem with either eBay or PayPal. And I've gotten a lot of great deals on eBay. I don't know why your having so many problems Ellen. Craig's List I'm a little leery of. I've gotten some good deals there. But, I'm always very careful in dealing with anybody on Craig's List. I use to buy a lot on Amazon. But, when they raised the level you needed to pay before getting free shipping, I've been using them less.I've bought 1:1 cars off both eBay and Craigslist. I have active search agents on eBay for rare items and they email me with good results on a regular basis. Craigslist is a great FREE medium when I need to get rid of something. I post an ad and more than not, I get responses. Especially if you want to give something away for free! I've never had a problem with Paypal ever. In fact eBay and Paypal side with the buyer much more than the sellers. FaceBook is another great tool. It has connected me with people I lost contact with a long time ago. I moved a lot as a kid due to my father being military, and now I am in contact with kids I knew from grammar school. Once I posted on FaceBook that I didn't have a picture of my house in Germany. A German fellow drove there and posted a photo to me! Cannot beat being able to accomplish things like that! I also can see what my friends and relatives are up to. So when we get together I already have a bunch of things to discuss. I do not get involved in the nonsense, games and other time wasters. People who have issues with modern services are either using them incorrectly, or haven't taken the time to learn how to pull value from them. I also encounter people who still say "I'll never have an EVIL computer or smart phone!" These are simply people who are afraid to try.
BigTallDad Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 All you need is a space between the multiple exclusions, for example I collect cups made of cow horn but don't want to wade through all the carved yak horn cups from China, or the pointy "viking" or "game of thrones" ones, so I search for "horn cup" -chinese -viking -thrones Whatever...I (like you) was showing there are ways to include multiple filters to reduce the search results

I am envious of you folks back east. There is only one hobby shop left in my region of the state that is not a chain store, and it has nothing other than things that have been released in the last 5 years.

iamsuperdan Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 The hobby shops around here don't carry the kits or supplies that I use, other than paints. Finding anything for weathering or detailing is impossible. And there is no one here selling parts or used kits. So where else to go but the internet? If there were local options, I'd love to use them, but I make do with what's available, so I use Ebay, Kijiji, and wherever else I can find online. Personally, I don't get fired up when I see a ton of ad listings for parts. And I don't get fired up about some of the nutty pricing. That's how it works. Someone has something to sell, and they charge whatever they feel it is worth. Sometimes, do I notice people charging a ridiculous amount for something I need? You bet. But I don't get all butthurt about it. Eventually, the right item will come along at a reasonable price. We're not talking life or death here. I can wait. People that rant about this kind of stuff always remind me of this... Besides, I do the same when I sell guitar parts. I overcharge on certain things for sure, things that I know are rare, or that I know are in demand, or that I don't really want to part with. And sometimes, people pay for it. And I don't feel bad about it.
Greg Myers Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Could this be capitalism ? The simple law of supply and demand at work, what ever the market will bare ?
Mike999 Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Well, when you've listed the same parts and kits at the same price for 2 to 3 years without a sale, I'd suggest you may be asking a tad more than the market will currently bear. Especially if I search a specific kit, see you trying to sell one for $179, and also see a fairly famous old-kit dealer asking less than half that price. But as I've said before, everyone has a right to ask whatever price they want. But on the other hand, I always have the right to...
modelercarl Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 In the past two weeks I have listed 16 kits on ebay to cut down the stash to something more manageable. I am very happy with the results, I got a little over $800 for them, a little more for some and what I was asking for the rest. Every buyer paid right away or the nexr day (very impressive) and paypal transferred the money to my bank within 2 days (a couple of times the next day). Several of the buyers even commented about how fair they thought the pricing was. I have been buying and selling on ebay for 11 years and have had only one problem in all that time and it was settled fairly by ebay.

Complaining becomes hobby and love to them. Edited October 4, 2016 by unclescott58

As our herd ages and dies off, more and more of us will be without a hobby shop. Where people originally said that the internet would kill the hobby, ironically it will be the one thing that saves the hobby. I can see where the hobby will be people around the world who don't have local clubs and resources, that meet daily on Internet chat boards... which will eventually be real time Skype sessions, transact business on the Internet and get together a few times a year at regional and national meets. This is why we are situating NNL East as a national social event, with host hotel and Friday evening get togethers. This will be important to the hobby in the future!
Mike999 Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 (edited) I have been buying and selling on ebay for 11 years and have had only one problem in all that time and it was settled fairly by ebay.Good to hear. I've been on eBay since 1999 with very few problems myself. When I put up my first sales, there was no PayPal or any other online payment system. Everything had to be done by Money Order or check. And believe me, that really made you appreciate the term "snail mail."Most eBay sellers, including me, insisted on Money Order only. But there were always a few wise guys who sent checks. So we sellers had to wait 10 days for the check to clear before shipping the kits. Then PayPal started up, and eBay quickly created its own competing payment system, Billpoint. That was a massive flop; sellers moving into online payments preferred PayPal by a huge margin. So eBay finally gave up and bought PayPal in the early 2000s. I've sold quite a few kits to professional kit dealers. No complaints there either. I have never done "Buy It Now," so the dealers compete in auctions against everybody else. The ones I've dealt with are very aggressive bidders - which of course I like when I'm the seller! Edited October 4, 2016 by Mike999 error

So we sellers had to wait 10 days for the check to clear before shipping the kits. In the early days I not only sold a few kits, but had a big business in old car dealer brochures, old postcards and collector stamps. I did over $1000 a month for awhile. I always accepted checks and with the email interactions back then, realized that the collector to collector market that eBay was born out of was made of friendly and honest people. I never had a bad check, ever.

I always accepted checks and with the email interactions back then, realized that the collector to collector market that eBay was born out of was made of friendly and honest people. I never had a bad check, ever.Never had a bad check from an eBay deal. The worst problem I ever had with that was pre-eBay. Not going to give the guy's name, but I learned (too late!) that he was notorious for shady dealing, especially around Chicago and the Midwest.I used to sell a few kits in the classified pages of That Other Magazine, and also in the rec.models.scale Usenet group. (For younger readers, Usenet is what we had before the Web really got going.)Anyway, the guy called me up wanting to buy several hundred dollars worth of kits. Said he would send a money order, but sent a check. It bounced. So did the next check he sent. And the next. By that time he was dodging my phone calls. He finally answered one and I told him my next call would be to the Fraud Division of his local police department. He finally coughed up the money, but it dragged on for months and was really aggravating.I posted about him in rec.models.scale and got a lot of responses. One guy worked in a hobby shop (yes, this was a LONG time ago). He knew the guy, and said he was telling kit distributors that he owned a shop. But he was actually buying kits wholesale from the distributor, then selling them out of the trunk of his car. He had burned several other people the same way he did me with the rubber checks, too. I'm glad those kind of shenanigans are a lot harder to pull on eBay.
gtx6970 Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 Had an Ebay deal go south a few years ago. Sold some guy 3 dealer promos for the total sum of $450 .Once he got them he kept saying they were damaged , but never sent pics to prove it . Kept giving me some song and dance how his email was blocking out going or my email was blocking incoming picture files. Finally after about 6 weeks he filed a paypal dispute . So I told him to send them back . What I got was 2 cars worth about $20. But because he insured them for the $450, He sent them airmail and without seeing who the box was from or what was in it,,I had to sign. Paypal refunded him his money.Burned me for the full amount , no matter how much I argued with paypal via email or phone. Sent them pics of what I sold and of what I got back in return ,,,,,,,,, I got screwed.Shortly afterwards I closed my ebay sellers account and haven't used them to accept payment since, and never will .Now I just use ebay and paypal to buy ONLY .

Ben Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 Is there a way that I'm not seeing to block certain sellers from search/listing pages? To me this model parts selling is getting a little out of hand and I'd like to unclutter my browsing from it. TIA.I totally hear where your coming from! Totally pathetic how these people buy a kit the try to sell one stinkin part from it for the cost of the entire kit! PJ Toys is one of the worst!!!!!!!! Absolutely sick of having to scroll through the thousands of listing he CONSTANTLY has on there!!!!!!!!!!

Maindrian Pace Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 You mean like this one??? Outrageous!! He's either lost what was left of his mind, or he's totally trolling us...
peteski Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 He's either lost what was left of his mind, or he's totally trolling us...I have a strong suspicion that the price is just a typo. I've seen similar typos in other eBay listings. Most likely a $20.00 item. Check his eBay store and you will see that his other items have "normal" prices. Bit inflated for my taste, but still more reasonable than two grand!
