Kit Basher Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 This is the Monogram kit. I picked it up at an auction for peanuts. Imagine my surprise when I saw what they sell for online! This is my first attempt at serious weathering. I was going for a dusty, "Africa" look. The "tent" is some toothpicks and a piece of an old bed sheet. The duffels and dry bag were molded out of Milliput, and covered with the same bed sheet. The crates are just blocks of wood with some strips of veneer for framing. The only thing missing was a distributor, which I made. Overall, a really fun kit to build. Any suggestions for improvement, especially with weathering, would be most welcome.
D. Battista Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Looks very realistic.... I think it looks great for your 1st attempt.... or any attempt for that matter.... Very Cool..!
High octane Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Very nice build on that Land rover Hugh, as I have an ESCI LWB Rover kit I hope to build someday like the one I rode in when we were in Bora Bora.
Kit Basher Posted January 31, 2017 Author Posted January 31, 2017 Thanks, Dave! Thanks, Nick! And whatever you were doing in Bora Bora, thanks for going!
landman Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 I'd say your weathering is about spot on.That's us below in the Sahara in 1975. I'm the one with the flat tire.
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Excellent Work!! Just the right amount of weathering!! Looks great!!
Kit Basher Posted January 31, 2017 Author Posted January 31, 2017 Thanks, Pat! And thanks for the pix. That is exactly what I was shooting for. I bet there are some interesting stories around those pix. Thanks Brian!
crazyjim Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Looks very realistic to me although I've never been to Africa.
Kit Basher Posted January 31, 2017 Author Posted January 31, 2017 Looks very realistic to me although I've never been to Africa.Me neither. Thanks, Jim!
wayne swayze Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Your model looks very well done! The weathering of dust looks quite realistic.
Kit Basher Posted January 31, 2017 Author Posted January 31, 2017 After looking at my photos, there was one area I was not happy with. So I popped out the "skylights", and painted the rubber gaskets around them. This is where I am now.
espo Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Weathering looks perfect to me, wouldn't change a thing. I like how you created all of the roof cargo.
kilrathy10 Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Awesome job on this one.....Very realistic.....And redoing the skylights was a great idea....Looks much better that way....
lghtngyello03 Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Awesome weathering. What was your technique that you used, also what product?
Kit Basher Posted January 31, 2017 Author Posted January 31, 2017 Weathering looks perfect to me, wouldn't change a thing. I like how you created all of the roof cargo. Thanks, David! The kit came with that roof rack. I either had to leave it off or put something in it.
Kit Basher Posted January 31, 2017 Author Posted January 31, 2017 Thanks, JT! Awesome weathering. What was your technique that you used, also what product? Thanks, Scott! Most of the dust is Testors paint, a mix of flat brown and flat white. It was very thin, and I set the airbrush so almost none came out. That way I could build it slowly, and add more in some areas than others. I also used a Vallejo gray wash, and little spots of Tamiya smoke. The final touches were done with ground up pastel powders.
Dann Tier Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 FANTASTIC BUILD!!!!! Everything looks realistic!!, Wish I could find this kit........I have the Italeri kit, but its a long wheel base, and I need the short one like this. I suppose I could shorten it, but i'd much rather get the kit you built. Thanks for sharing!!
