StevenGuthmiller Posted July 3, 2019 Author Posted July 3, 2019 I could be wrong, but my understanding is that a "true" original Italian pizza should be a thin crust with olive oil, crushed fresh Marzano tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil. Just about every American pizza has way too much cheese and far too many toppings. Steve

The thin crust is the best. You won't ever find a thin crust pizza overloaded with toppings. The best examples here are Patsy's (fourth oldest pizzeria in the U.S.) , on 1st Ave. & 118th St. in East Harlem, John's (second oldest, opened in 1915) on Bleecker St. in the West Village, Lombardi's (oldest in the U.S. opened in 1905) on the corner of Spring & Mott St. in Little Italy and Coney Island's Totonno's (third oldest, opened in 1924) on Neptune Avenue. All make their pizzas with olive oil-coated thin crusts, just a bit of sauce made from San Marzano tomatoes, fresh moozarel and fresh basil and oregano. until the late '50s - early '60s, you could only get pies, no slices. There is a phenomenon in New York City known as "The Pizza Principle". This is a humorous but generally historically accurate "economic law" proposed by native New Yorker Eric M. Bram. He noted, as reported by The New York Times in 1985, that from the early 1960s "the price of a slice of pizza has matched, with uncanny precision, the cost of a New York subway ride." Subway fare in 1963 was 15 cents; a slice cost 15 cents. In 1980, a subway token cost 60 cents; so did a slice. In 1992, the cost of both was $1.25. Today, the fare is $2.75, also the price of a slice. Amazin', ain't it?
Joe Handley Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Pizza and fried mushrooms from Little Italian in Naperville, IL, haven't had that since Mom came home from Alden Estates last April. Brought it home after a doctor's appointment today so Mom and Dad could have some (Mom was thrilled!)

Many times, turns out there's one in Lombard as well and they're each run by a sibling. The sister runs the Winfield store while the brother has the Lombard store. Lately Mom has wanted pizza from a new place on Geneva in Winfield across from where Adamo's was that's called Maciano's. Next time you're back up this way, check out this Little Italian place, they're also eat in and are worth it being on the cool side if you drag them back up West Chicago like I did last night, very filling too. Either did I until I found that store by accident in Lombard one day, mentioned one time while picking up an order at the Winfield location and one of the young ladies working that night told me that.

For me it was beer brats, potato salad, macaroni salad, watermelon, bacon jalapeno poppers, and pumpkin bars with cream cheese icing for desert. All washed down with a few cans of Hamm's beer! Steve

The marinade consisted of ancho and pasilla chiles, toasted almonds and sesame seeds, garlic, onion, tomato, cumin, cocoa, cinnamon, and other spices. Accompanying was a caramelized onion and wild rice pilaf, and a Caprese salad with fresh picked basil and tomatoes from the "garden". (pots) Steve

Tom Geiger Posted July 13, 2019 Posted July 13, 2019 We had dinner last evening at our new favorite restaurant! Aside from having amazing food they have a really cool theme and decor! They have the most amazing Fish & Chips. This is a meal that's either done very well or very poorly, there is no in between! After getting poor versions of this British classic meal I was Jonesing for a good one! And this place answered that call. Three HUGE pieces of fish with crispy batter. I even told the owner he only needed to give two pieces to satisfy most humans! My wife always orders salmon and she was very happy with her meals. This time we changed it up (which is odd for us!) and we ordered from the daily specials. She had crab cakes and I ordered the shrimp tacos. Both meals were very good! This restaurant is in survival mode due to the archaic Pennsylvania liquor license practices. It seems it takes over a year to do a simple license transfer. This restaurant opened in January without a license. They promised they'd have the credentials and could start serving by April and that hasn't happened. Now they have no idea. So what to do? They can't sell beer and wine, so they give it away! That's right, free beer with your meal! Can't beat that!
Rodent Posted July 13, 2019 Posted July 13, 2019 Beating the 100 degree heat at home, hanging out with a friend on the NorCal coast. Managed to pull this off in a strange kitchen and on a strange grill without many supplies. New York from Whole Paycheck, corn, salad, and an Oregon beer. Appetizer was an incredible tomato-lentil bruschetta on wheat crackers (friend made). Other pic was the view to my left as we were eating. I guess I should copy this to "what pleased you today).
