Greg Myers Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 Being a model guy I have all the models I can handle. I know what i like, I usually get what I want.My stash is quite large. Comes a time when ask, (Fathers day, birthday, anniversary, etc.) what do you want? I have ask for a model knowing full well my loved ones would have absolutely no idea which one to get. Also, the ones I would want being made from unobtainium. However I am always curious, just what would they get. Through all these years, I'm going past 70 this year, I have only received two kits as presents. The first , (Monogram '40 Ford pick up which I already had several and even built a few.) from my oldest nephew. The second, for Christmas a few years ago from my ( loving ? ) daughter. A reissue AMT Piranha . First hint should have been when the opening frenzy came to a sudden stop and all eyes were on me. " Do you have that one?" Big stash, not really sure and being polite, " No, I don't think so." Then they all burst into laughter." I got it from the big pile in your room"
Badluck 13 Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 Hahahaha... I hope my family don't see this post but then again it sure would save them a bundle hahahaha
Tom Geiger Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 (edited) It kinda goes like this: I have much better sources than my family. I cringe at the thought of them going into a hobby shop to buy a model I either already have or don't want at full retail. So I've told everyone "no model gifts". I have every model that I need. At NNL East I had a guy approach the raffle desk with a winning ticket. He complained, "Oh dern! I already have all this stuff." I just look at him and said, "Then appreciate how fortune you are." He stopped dead, then laughed and had to agree. And for everything else, I tell people "don't buy me presents". A nice card and well wishes is good enough. I have everything I need, and I don't like my kids, as they struggle for their positions in life, to spend money on me. Edited June 30, 2018 by Tom Geiger
glue fumes Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 I have two options I use, because yes I do get a lot of models from my wife and daughters. A local hobby shop gift card is a good one. I have pictures of models that I am interested in that I can text them, they can choose from that group what they want to buy. Typically I look for less expensive ones, or tell them that they could use the Hobby Lobby coupon. My LHS, gives my wife the same discount they give me. so it becomes a win win for every one. I would rather get a kit I can mine for parts rather then another shirt, or tie etc.
berr13 Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 That's funny!! But as my grandmother used to say, "cash is always appropriate".
fordf-100 Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 I love getting models as gifts! I always have a pre written list of new/current kits that I would like to have and just hand it to my wife or daughter and tell them to " surprise me"!
HomerS Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 My sister-in-law told me years ago that I'm hard to buy for because if there is something I want, I go get it. I said that is because I give people the exact thing I want, including texting a pic of the item, even the price and yet it doesn't come to fruition!! Latest example, last year Costco had a pearl green 1/18 Maisto Nissan GT-R (Skyline) in their Christmas merch....$14.99. The wife said our oldest son was trying to figure out what to give me and knowing his girlfriend's family had a Costco membership, I asked for that. She gave the info to them. It was a limited edition so I gave them this info when the cases were put out and explained it needed to be sooner than later. Weeks later, the wife informed me that this was redirected to her family to get me the gift exchange at her family. I told her the 1% that I clinged to went to 0.00% right then and there. Months later at the gift exchange, let's just leave it I didn't get the car!!!
OldTrucker Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 A gift is just that, a gift. I'm thankful for their thought. I get 2 to 3 models a year as well as a case or two usually a different brand so none will stack together! The only thing is when they give a kit that is specific like the Christine and Starsky and Hutch cars that I know the expect to look like the box pictures.
espo Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 My wife will often want to get me something I may need for my models be it a model or a part or tool. We just give a general dolor range and I use it for what ever I want. Works the best for us anyway.
matthijsgrit Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 Last year for my birthday I got the Revell Germany '69 Camaro Z/28 RS. I never asked for it, but my daughter (6 years of age now 5 then) convinced my wife to buy me a model Camaro. They know my passion for Camaro's and know that I'd like to build way more than I do. Some tot the hobby shop they went and bought the kit. It was the best gift EVER! And/because I didn't even ask! She told me how she wanted me to build it (just like on the box) and now it's almost finished! I won't ask for a kit myself, because of course the wishes are quite specific and the hobby market in Holland isn't very big, so I buy most online (after lots of research...). I cant't ask that for anyone not into my hobby...
Ben Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 Growing up, my mom would get me kits for Christmas and my birthday. She always did good!
