Gt fan Posted July 7, 2018 Posted July 7, 2018 Time to start a new project. This is the Model Factory Hiro kit of the FIA Cobra. The kit has a resin body and interior with all the remaining parts in white metal or photo etch. I used a magnetic tumbler to clean and the flash off of the parts . After a quick wash they come out like you see in the photos. The whole kit took about 45 mins to do. It beats sanding !!! Every mounting hole on the kit needs to be drilled open. It's good to have a few pinvises around to put different size bits in them. The main part of the chassis is assembled and ready for paint. The motor has been painted and is drying. I'm looking for help with how to post update photos as I go along.
Phildaupho Posted July 7, 2018 Posted July 7, 2018 Looks like a beautiful kit. I built a model of this car a few years ago in 1/25 scale using Academy body converted back to 289. Looking forward to seeing more.
Foxer Posted July 8, 2018 Posted July 8, 2018 This looks like an amazing model and will be watching to see one go together
FabbricaP Posted July 8, 2018 Posted July 8, 2018 Looks like a great kit! The magnetic tumbler is a great tip, cleaning white metal parts can get quite tedious
afx Posted July 8, 2018 Posted July 8, 2018 I'm a Cobra fan as well and completed an FIA conversion of the Sunny/Academy/Minicraft kit a while back. I'll be following. Post your progress as a "Reply" to this tread as you proceed. Look at some of the other WIP threads on the forum and you'll get the idea.

I will check those out. I would love to see the pics of FIA conversion.
afx Posted July 8, 2018 Posted July 8, 2018 Here is the WIP thread: Not MFH caliber but happy with how it turned out.
Gt fan Posted July 9, 2018 Author Posted July 9, 2018 That looks really good ... Thanks for sharing the thread.. I got the frame painted and the engine started today. Will post pictures tomorrow .
afx Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 Thanks Tim. Haven't built a MFH kit but have seen a few in person, they are impressive. I have a bunch of Cobra reference material. If you have any questions I'm happy to help find the answer. JC

I have fixed the rear of the chassis at least three times now. The white metal is really thin. If you have any suspension detail photos that would help. Many thanks in advance .
afx Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 (edited) Daytona Coupe but ran the same suspension as the roadsters. http://www.legendarymotorcar.com/inventory/1965-shelby-289-cobra-1578.aspx Edited July 10, 2018 by afx
Gt fan Posted July 11, 2018 Author Posted July 11, 2018 Have some time tonight to get a bit more of the motor done. Had to file each side of the bottom of the carbs to get them to sit flat. Every hole in this kit needs to be drilled open. I was able to get the main frame painted in semi gloss black. The motor mounts are the parts in the clips.

It may be a notch above but at 3-times the cost of the HRM kit the MFH should be better. I hate to nit pick someone else build thread and if it bothers you Tim please let me know and I will delete the post. However the MFH cylinder head based on the exhaust ports looks more like a 427 than a 289. I doubt it will be noticeable on the finished build with the headers and spark plug wires in place and is certainly no reflection on you Tim and your building skills. 289: 427: Edited July 12, 2018 by afx
Gt fan Posted July 12, 2018 Author Posted July 12, 2018 All comments are welcome. Mfh does make a 427 kit. I bought the kit for 200 about 2 years ago. It could have a bit more detail. I just hate drilling all the holes. You have to test fit everything.
Dann Tier Posted July 12, 2018 Posted July 12, 2018 Its definitely worth the annoyance, though!...looking fantastic!!
Gt fan Posted July 12, 2018 Author Posted July 12, 2018 Found these on amazon. 15.00 . Well worth it. They have a bigger shank. Works fantastic in the Tamiya pinvise. There labeled CNC engraving bits
Mr. Metallic Posted July 13, 2018 Posted July 13, 2018 Thanks for the heads up on those bits. I put some in my Amazon cart
