Thanks Slusher and jchrisf!

Wow.. those look great David!  That super glossy clear is Rustoleum Painters Touch Clear?  Any tips or secrets or does it come out looking that good?  I've never had gloss like that from Duplicolor clears.

Where do you buy your Rustoleum paints?

Thanks! Yep, that is Rustoleum Painters Touch Clear believe it or not. I don`t really have any secrets other then my typical wet sanding and rubbing out with compound. I would say it rubs out just as nicely as Duplicolor. It actually seemed to take less effort to wet sand and rub out the Rustoleum.

If I remember correctly, I picked up the engine enamel at Advance Auto, the Marigold and clear at Walmart, and the Valspar paint at Lowes. The Valspar is actually the exact color used on the 1:1 Lowes stock car.

We use a lot of Sherwin Williams paints at work, so I was remembering my rep said something about SW buying Valspar.  As an aside, all paints at Lowe's are supposed to be SW products under some label or another.  BUT... SW owns Valspar, Krylon, Plastikote, AND duplicolor.   RPM as stated above, owns Rustoleum and Testors, among others.

And with the formulas changing constantly, it's always going to be a "test in an inconsipcuous are" deal from now on.   And finding a primer that keeps crazing at bay.  Don't paint your unicorm body without testing first.

I just stopped by Walmart and they didn't have any Painters Touch.  i think I remember seeing it at Home Depot which is closer to me than Advanced Auto so I'm hoping this will work out for me.. and it is less expensive :)  Wish I would've known before because I was just there two days ago but I thought I'd always heard horror stories here about Rustoleum.

Well, that sucks. Rustoleum is not a good product, certainly not close to Dupli-Color. The big box stores are also replacing their Krylon products for Rustoleum as well.

Hobby lobby carries Rustoleum and some Krylon. I buy mine there..

E. Tommy Callahan Jr. is the Rustoleum rep now.

I would think he is even smart enough to know that stuff is liquid junk in a can

And I am surprised no one got that yet, or they just don't care, but I give you solid props sir.;)

Thank  you Jonathan. The movie Tommy Boy is the story of my life, just don't get the royalty check! :D

The only thing I find Rustoleum good for is their red oxide primer-------that's it! Their 'sandable' primers in no way compare to either Duplicolor, or my favorite which can still be had, Plastikote T-35. ;)

Rustoleum definitely sucks! -it takes waaaaay too much concentration to NOT drown your parts in paint, and that's if the narrow spray pattern doesn't blast the part out of your fingers first. Krylon is actually pretty nice I've discovered recently, and most of their cans have the same spray tip as Duplicolor uses, which is a nice fine, wider spray. I will NEVER use Rustoleum products for modelling.

I noticed that too about Rustoleum.. It really soaks the part but I've never had a run.  I've also noticed it stays sticky for a few days.

Is Krylon enamel?

Krylon is enamel. The primer and paint Rustoleum does spry thick and does not dry fast. I don't use that stuff...

Hawk above has gotten some fantastic results with Rustoleum Painters Touch.  I saw the Painters Touch at Home Depot the other day.. and may have to try it.  I had never heard of that formula before but if I can get the results Hawk got out of a $4 can I will be sold.

One thing I noticed with the Rustoleum is that the colors take a really long time to dry. I painted a corvette in black, and even after waiting weeks it was still tacky.  I noticed that with several colors. However, the clear seems to dry rather quickly. So I always follow the color with several coats of clear and I can usually rub it out within a similar amount of time compared to Duplicolor.

You’d think the smaller stores would avoid Rustoleum since it’s widely available at big box stores like Walmart and Home Depot, with the associated price war. Duplicolor is unique to auto parts stores.

Yeah.. I think Advanced Auto wanted $8 a can whereas the Home Depot a block away only wants $4.  Crazy.

I'd still pay the $8 anyway....lol, its worth the faster drying, finer, more controllable spray, durability, kolor selection, and peace of mind knowing that handling it during assembly wont start making it tacky

LOL.. I meant for the same can of Rustoleum Dann.

Dann, what do you use for flat, gloss and semi-gloss black and white?  The Duplicolor I have from the Auto Parts store only had flat and gloss black and it was Acrylic Enamel.  Goes on nice and dries fast but I'm always afraid a lacquer on or around it will hurt it.  I have some Rustoleum Maxx satin black that I also got at the auto parts store since they didn't have a satin Duplicolor and it looks really nice but it goes on thick as you described and takes a few days to completely dry.

Check a NAPA or Bennett Auto Supply store, they have the Duplicolor lacquers in semi gloss, gloss and flat blacks. Fast drying and won't craze the plastic.

I found the Acrylic Lacquer Mike.. is that the one you meant? I haven't used the blacks yet but did use the white and it doesn't cover well and bubbles up.  What is a good white?

The Duplicolor Acrylic Enamel flat black is really nice.  It dries fast and looks great but is a little fragile because it scratches and chips easy on a chassis.

For white cars you cannot find any thing better than Krylon White Lacquer

Hey, Chris!  For a Flat black, I use their Black Sandable Primer. For a semi-gloss black, I use their Universal Flat black, which ISNT flat...lol, and for a gloss black, I use their Universal Gloss Black. If for some reason I cant get ahold of these Duplicolors, I go with Tmiya sprays, and lets say you need a flat black, but you only have Duplicolors semi-gloss, and gloss blacks, I would pick one of them to spray first, and then use Tamiyas Flat Clear over it. You can do this with their semi, and gloss clears as well...

Try Amazon. Do use primer under it. It has very solid pigments, drys fast and can be recoated any time. I usually put a few coats on let dry, then sand it down with 2400 or 3200 grit and then put a few final coats on then polish.
