Lovefordgalaxie Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 Inspired by Mr. Mike's '56, I'm starting a build on one. Mine will be a single tone car, painted with Tamiya TS-64 dark mila blue. Will try my best to replicate a dual quad blown 312. Car will be lowered a bit, and will ride on steel wheels, painted Tamiya metallic red, and wide whitewall firestones. Thinking about a racing white interior with black inserts, and black carpeting. Starting body work today. Deepening the panel lines, and inscribing some that are missing from the body.
cobraman Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 I have no doubt that this will be another home run model.
mrmike Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 I'm happy to have inspired you to build a '56 Ford! I'm looking forward to see your vision come to fruition.
espo Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 Are you going to make it a Crown Victoria ?? With or without the glass roof ??
Dave Darby Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 I'm sure it'll be another home run. Couple of tips when it comes to that Y block. The T bird valve covers in that kit aren't the best. The 57 Fairlane and T bird kits have better sets. That and don't forget that Y Block distributors aren't mounted straight up and down. Y blocks have an external oil pump on the driver side rear of the block. The distributor has a driveshaft to run it.

Love those engines. Won't be using the Thunderbird valve covers, I'll use the steel valve covers from the '57 Ford kit. 292 Y-Block 4V High Performance by CCCP Digital Studio, on Flickr
Lovefordgalaxie Posted October 23, 2018 Author Posted October 23, 2018 Stating body work on the Fairlane. Started sanding the mold lines, since I built a few of those, I know where to find them. Also deepened the trunk panel line. Added the front fender panel lines, on top of the fenders, separating them from the cowl, and on the bottom, separating the fenders from the rockers. Also, on the back of the car, there are two visible sheet metal joints between the quarters and the rear valance. This line is actually close to a mold line so you have to sand the mold line off, and scribe the body panels separation line. A little putty was needed on heavier mold lines, and on the classic spot on the rear fins, where there are sink marks just above the side trim.
mrmike Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 Thank you for the above pictures! I guess I missed some important body lines that I need to scribe! It's a good thing I haven't started painting the body just yet!

Lovefordgalaxie Posted October 23, 2018 Author Posted October 23, 2018 Almost done with the body. I take my time doing this, as it's in my opinion the most important phase of building a kit. No paint job will look good on a body full of mold lines, flash, and small defects. Once in a while something escapes, but I try to avoid it. One of the more fiddly parts of this kit, are the headlight doors, or trim pieces. The area around them on the body have some deep mold lines to help. Since this will be a single tone car, the work is a little bit less complicated. I glues the headlight doors in place on the body, and will have to use some putty to make them to conform with the fenders. After that, I'll have to re scribe the separation line between the headlight doors and fenders. Did the same thing on the other '56 Fords I built, and also on the '57 Thunderbird.
espo Posted October 25, 2018 Posted October 25, 2018 I always enjoy watching your builds. I like how you strive for accuracy on everything.

Lovefordgalaxie Posted October 26, 2018 Author Posted October 26, 2018 Body all in primer. Next step is foiling the emblems, and Paint!!! Have to have a sunny day to paint. Tamiya spray paint is not much fond of humidity.

Modelbuilder Mark Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 I really like this car, and I am sure this one will look great!
Lovefordgalaxie Posted October 27, 2018 Author Posted October 27, 2018 Body is in color. Painted with the Tamiya spray can. I'm on the fence about using clear. Think the shine is quite enough. Even when I'm building a non stock, it looks like I end choosing colors next to stock. The Tamiya TS-64 could pass as Nocturne Blue Poly. A factory color for 1956...
Lovefordgalaxie Posted November 9, 2018 Author Posted November 9, 2018 After a couple of weeks off, I resumed work on the '56 Ford Fairlane. The rear end was assembled, and some putty needed to smooth things up. The engine halves were glued together, and again some putty was necessary. The glue line on the transmission casing will stay, as the real transmission had a casting part line right there. The front seat needed a second putty application, as the sides were kind of hard to make smooth.
gman Posted November 9, 2018 Posted November 9, 2018 Looking good so far- can't wait to see the polished spin you put on this one
Lovefordgalaxie Posted November 23, 2018 Author Posted November 23, 2018 Ok gentlemen, I'm baack!! Hadn't much time to work on this car, but did some more progress. Decided to give the body a coat of clear. Used Sherwin Williams 2 part clear, and also gave it a polish after dry. After dealing with the body, I finished the seam treatment on parts composed of two components, like the rear and, engine and front seat. Gave the interior, a coat of white, that will be the basic color. Will wait for it to dry, and mask to paint the black bits. Also finished the making of a custom pressure boot for the dual four barrel carburetors, and will be using the supercharger from the AMT '57 Ford. Also, found a great set of Cragar wheels on my 1950 Ford convertible kit, and will be using them, along with a set of Firetone Wide Ovals.
