I don't doubt that this phenomena is real.

I'm just stating the fact that these types noises are much more likely to be coming from your house itself than from the ground around it.

It can be pretty obvious at times when the loud crack is coming from somewhere over your head that it's originating in your attic and not from your flower bed.

A few weeks ago when our area went from a relatively warm spell to very cold in a short period of time, I laid awake one night listening to my house make all sorts of noises coming from many different areas.

These sounds ranged from small pops to cracks as loud as the sound of someone hitting the house with a baseball bat.

Steve the booming and popping sounds were from the house, sounded like from the walls and roof. But there were sounds coming from the ground close to the house like maybe someone banging a shovel on the ground ?? .That's the best way I can describe it.

Yes, please stay safe. I've been in -20F and that was bad enough. My face hurt every time I went outside. Good thing we build models. I'd go nuts cooped up in a house for days on end.

Events like this that make me so glad I made certain choices.

Many years ago, I needed a job. Silicon Valley was dead. Nobody hiring and those that were hiring acted like zombies. We were going to have to move anyway, so we threw the search open nationwide. Got offers in Wisconsin, Toronto, and San Diego, California. We chose San Diego mostly for financial reasons; thinking we'd move back to the bay area in a few years. About this time of year, I had to turn on the air conditioning. Right about that time, our move-back plans started to disintegrate. 26 years later, I'm still glad we came here.

-11 F here. Far too cold for this area. Being at the point where Lake Huron empties into the St Clair River, we rarely ever get down this cold.

Even the dogs don't like it. Straight out, do the dirty deed and straight back in. No noodling round the yard the last few days.... :)

The mentioning of frost heaving or earth quakes can be a very expensive thing for homes with basements. Depending on the drainage around the foundation the freezing can actually crack the basement walls. As for the cold we have all heard about the toilet seats in the Yukon, but the pictures you see of people throwing boiling water in the air and seeing it instantly freezing is the most impressive to myself.

It was -4 here this morning. The upside? Walmart was nearly empty when I got groceries!

Sam

You're a braver man than I !

I would rather freeze to death, or for that matter, starve to death, than to shop at Walmart! <_<

My daughter is living in Lincoln Park, Chicago and last night her water pipes froze. 500 bucks later they were flowing again. I think she may have been over charged but perhaps not.

Frost Quakes sound more like someone running into your house with a truck. Or maybe two trucks. When the ones hit Southern Ontario were widespread enough that they were on the news. And in my neighborhood was talking about them for several days. Two of my neighbors apparently met each other outside in about 4 a.m. checking their houses over to see if there was any damage because it was that loud.

At -5 this morning, the remote start refused to do so.  It worked yesterday at the milder 1 degree above zero.

I learned last week that my G8 remote start will shut off the engine after about ten minutes.  I went out the night before and set the desired temp at 80 degrees and cranked the fan.  The next morning, I hit the remote start and was expecting it to be mildly tropical when I went out to take my son to school.  We walked out and the car was off.  He asked if I hit the remote start and I confirmed I did.  It wasn't the Margaritaville like I was hoping for.  No!!  Leave it run until it hits the desired temp or it drains the 18 gallon tank.

I've heard of a similar phenomena that can happen at other times of the year as well.

Don't remember what the cause was.

So this is what I found when I got in  my truck this morning.

-38 Celcius is about -36 Farenheit.

Started with no problems, buit wow  was it cold. Despite the seat heaters, the foam was rock hard. Steering was like arm wrestling. Suspension, tires, everything was stiff. Took a while for everything to get warmed up and somewhat comfortable.

I plan on hiding in my office with my Tim Hortons Steeped Tea all day today.

Most cars will allow you to program the factory remote start for 5, 10, or 15 minute run times. And most let you cycle the remote starting twice. Then you actually need to physically start it.

Wind is making it feel like -10...ok, so it's not -50, but still plenty cold.

An area animal shelter posted on Facebook (when the temps went below zero with wind chills -35 for a few days) if the residents leave animals outside without proper shelter, they would take the animal!  I saw them yesterday and went over to thank them for someone stepping up for these animals.  They said that most residents took the warning but some still did not and had to take some, including a badly frostbitten cat.
