Hotrod 97 Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 This one is from my Dad’s old collection. It was half complete when I found it. I had started to do some detailing on the parts that were assembled, but wasn’t quite satisfied with how it looked. The plan is to refresh/restore this Indy Pace Car.
Tommy124 Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 You do that, it will surely make for a fine model!
Renegade Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 Looks like a great start. Look forward to seeing it finished.
vamach1 Posted February 25, 2019 Posted February 25, 2019 If you are particular about the color I think Pace Car white was a little different from Wimbledon white. Of course the engine compartment would be semi-gloss black.

The way I understand it, the real pace cars were Pace Car White, the 260 powered parade cars were Wimbledon white, and the special edition 260 powered coupes were Pace Car White.
Hotrod 97 Posted May 13, 2019 Author Posted May 13, 2019 Time for me to get back to this build. After a few hours in the Purple Pond, the paint came right off the body and radiator. It appears that the radiator is assembled sideways, which is a simple fix. The inner rims are soaking in IPA, and I'm slowly but surely getting the interior disassembled.
Hotrod 97 Posted May 14, 2019 Author Posted May 14, 2019 Started disassembly on the interior. All I have yet to disassemble is the column and steering wheel.
vamach1 Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 Trim the decals as close as you can or else they will look like giant decals.

randyc Posted May 17, 2019 Posted May 17, 2019 I'm old enough to be the dad in this situation and I would be honored if my kids took up my hobby. Not sure they ever will, but nice that you are.

I better get busy - you never know when the clock will run out.
randyc Posted May 20, 2019 Posted May 20, 2019 My youngest son shows no interest in building models. Although he loves toy cars, 1/64 mostly, but he always looks when I do and has quite a selection of exotic cars and Mustangs and Camaros. And he will build a 2000 pc Lego set. The new Lego sets are probably closest things to models that will capture kids' imagination and focus. I did find a couple stalled builds this weekend that I may take up sometime.

Your son has good taste in cars LOL. I started with an interest in Legos, which evolved into diecasts, which then became an interest in models. So, there may be a hope for the model building hobby to carry on
vamach1 Posted May 21, 2019 Posted May 21, 2019 I still have thei kit new in the box (opened but not started). I guess I am a little behind on my builds.

Of course we didn't have as many legos and stuff "back in the day" Only three tv channels and walking uphill 5 miles in the snow both ways to school back then.... LOL
Hotrod 97 Posted June 15, 2019 Author Posted June 15, 2019 Got some more paint stripped. Just need to fine tune the interior pan and dash, and then it'll be ready for primer.
Hotrod 97 Posted June 19, 2019 Author Posted June 19, 2019 Got the front and rear pans attached, sanded the mold lines, and filled some gaps on the body. Next step is to fill in a small blemish above both headlights.
Hotrod 97 Posted November 9, 2019 Author Posted November 9, 2019 It's been a while since I worked on this build, but now it's back on the workbench. The chassis assembly was actually pretty easy to get apart using the freezing technique. The paint was stripped off all of the parts, and the chassis plate is now in gray primer. It wasn't too bad to start, but I started cleaning the engine up a bit (re-detailing, re-painting, re-chroming, etc.). It's kinda hard to see in the pics, but the interior and dash are primed with white primer. I filled and sanded the blemishes behind the headlight bezels and got the body and hood in gray primer.
Hotrod 97 Posted March 31, 2020 Author Posted March 31, 2020 I'm back on this build now that I got the Mach 1 done. This Mustang has been a WIP for over 25 years now. Here's what I got so far. The body is primed and the panel lines were darkened. The chassis, interior, and dash assembly are also in primer. Lots of loose parts are in plastic bags, same with the glass and tires. The engine isn't too bad, but could use some touch-ups. And the decals are a little discolored, but still decent. The lever on the steering column broke off a while ago - that's what's in the plastic "vial" on the left. Next step is to figure out what needs redone and what is fine as-is.
Scott8950 Posted March 31, 2020 Posted March 31, 2020 I like it, looks like your doing a great job. I have one that needs restored, picked it up at a flea mkt.
espo Posted March 31, 2020 Posted March 31, 2020 Just saw this build. Looks like a nice rebuild. You mentioned earlier on the body work and especially the area over the head lights needed work. I noticed in the last picture after you had primed the body the headlight area was still in need of a like work.

Yeah, the headlight area and front and rear pans still need some work yet. After that, the body should be ready for another coat of primer and paint prep.
