'66 Shelby GT350H rescue

Since the '67 Shelby and '64 Indy Pace Car projects are slow going, I though I'd add another one to the workbench to keep me busy. This one is another rescue and restore. I started it back in 2015 and never saw it finished.

The body has some dust and lint in the paint, so it'll need stripped and repainted.

It appears that there was a failed attempt at decaling the hood and rear panel.

The interior and chassis assemblies were painted gloss black without any primer.

The wheels and engine don't look too bad, but I'm still going to refresh them.

More to come after I get some parts disassembled and stripped of paint.

I was given one of these, a kid painted the body and glass that is goober-glued together, with nail polish.  Missing two tires.  But decals are untouched.  Who wants it?

This should be a cakewalk!

I like this kit for it's realism and relative simplicity.  My only issue (no fault of R/M) is the hood stripes look great on the sheet but will not cover the hood scoop without some wrinkles.  The ones I built I painted the center stripes.  My prayers to the modeling gods have not been answered for a 1/24 kit of a 71-73 Mustang.  Somehow we got a 69 Shelby fastback and finally a convertible but as long as those old MPC molds are still around and they can sell enough I'm stuck with a 73 fastback without even the correct decals.  My apologies for going off topic.   Good luck with the resto - I have about ten unbuilt 65-66 R/M Mustangs and Shelbys.

Why not try to sand the body and hood and repaint them?,it doesn't look to bad in the pictures that they need to be stripped.

No worries at all. Sounds like you have a great collection. Thanks for the heads-up about the wrinkling hood decals. Out of curiosity, what type of paint did/do you use for the center stripes?

I appreciate the input. I though about doing that, but I’m not quite happy with the overall finish of the paint. IIRC, it was 4 decent coats of gloss black over bare white plastic.

I'm guessing plain old Testors gold.  I need to repaint the stripes as I built this one over 30 years ago.

I built this one and it looks great on the shelf.  IF you can get the decals to work.  Seems like they were just too stiff to work.   I ended up using gold automotive vinyl stripes.   They conformed better than the kit decals but I couldn't reproduce the side stripes.  Good luck - does Keith Marks make this set?  Something other than the kit decals, unless the newer ones work better.

If you want to paint the stripes use this as a guide.  Basically the stripes are wider on the roofs and narrow towards the front and back.  I bet a lot of people did not know that.  Those that do will respond they did.

Thank you for the info on the decals, Randy. Keith Marks does make a ‘65/‘66 GT350H decal sheet. I was planning on trying to get the side decals to work, and paint the top stripes.

Thank you very much for the guide, Rex. It sure will come in handy. I didn’t know that the stripes had different widths. Now time to get the body stripped and repainted...

Here is how the body turned out after about 4 hours in the Purple Pond. The side scoops came off very easily, since they were applied after painting.

Note that the real car shouldn't have any engine badge or M-U-S-T-A-N-G lettering on the sides of the front fenders.  Now would be a good time to remove them!

Good catch.  That's true for any 65-66 Shelby.

Slowly but surely getting the interior apart. The seats aren't budging from the interior pan, so I'll work on them after I strip the paint off.

Another build that stalled for a bit, but I'm back at it again.

I took all of the chrome parts off of the engine, then put it in the purple pond for a bit. It seems that I won't get the engine apart without breaking it, so I'm going to paint it as-is and detail it later.

There was probably about half a tube of glue used for the interior assembly, so the interior tub, seats, and arm rests are now one piece. Same for the chassis assembly.

Anyways, pretty much all of the sub-assemblies are primed and ready for paint now.

i also been working on the same kit i just need to strip the black because the stripes didn't turn out good and i want to paint it blue now anyway

I built one some years ago, I think it is one of the best kits I have ever built from an US manufacturer, maybe the Galaxie 48 Chevy is a bit better, but still....

Great job!! Most people do not know that. I have one and until the repaint , I did not know that!
