jefropas Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 I'll break the mood here, just got a built up 68" Coronet R/T sans front bumper and radiator support wall for $15....a few days in Purple Power and I am happy as a clam. Being a child of the 60's and a HUGE B-body Mopar fan, this has been on my MIA list forever. Hate all ya'll want, she's a beaut, and I agree there's a ton of holes left to be filled in late 60's muscle cars...that is all... Jeff
Snake45 Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 If you HAD a '68 Coronet model, what color would you paint it? I have the Modelhaus resin repop. Would like to paint it in some "iconic" factory color, but nothing on the '68 color chart really spins my windmill. I suppose Bronze is my favorite, with medium green and dark turquoise coming in after that. Someone, inspire me!
magicmustang Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 I'd do one in Dick Landy silver with a black vinyl top, but that's just me.

Landy's '68 Coronets (and Charger and Dart) began his iconic red/blue/silver paint jobs. But that's an interesting idea. Interestingly, in 1968 I started building one of the MPC kits in 1968 as Landy's. But the candy red part of the paint job didn't turn out, and it got destroyed in our December 1968 basement fire.

As to the topic, I don't get the buzz either. The '69 Coronet grille and taillight panel are much more attractive, especially the R/T and 500 models. Now a '68 Sport Satellite, or GTX.... ;-)
djflyer Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 (edited) I may be a bit late to the party, but anyone interested in AMC products from the mid-late 60's should check out "Too Many Projects" on Facebook. This resin caster has an amazing selection of AMC's from Ambassadors to Marlins, 2 doors/4 doors/and wagons. I just received a '67 Ambassador that I bought from his May yard sale. FABULOUS casting quality (except for some excess flash which I knew about already) Great stuff! He also has a great selection of older Mopars, Crown Vics and other forgotten older cars. https://www.facebook.com/Too-Many-Projects-1669710309751941/ Edited June 8, 2020 by djflyer
GMP440 Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Well I guess the originator of this topic is tired of reading about model builders wanting to see a 68 Coronet kit come out again. If we don't let the kit manufactures know about model car subjects we would like to see come out , yes things will not happen. I think we as builders have a voice. The longer and louder we talk they will listen. I too would like to see a kit of the 68 Coronet come out. I beleive other builders see that too. Different versions of this kit can be done. A stock version, Dick Landy drag version, even a #99 Paul Goldsmith Nascar version. A kit like this would sell very well. Recently, Round 2 has been opening up the vaults to see what is feasible to release. The is a subject that if produced would sell well. Round 2 has even gone into uncharted waters to do all new tooling for the 1967 4 door Supernatural Impala. That 4 door is all new tooling. Those that say Round 2 will not invest money for new tooling, need to think again. The same thing can be done with an all new kit of the 68 Coronet, potentally giving them good return on investment. So, where do we go from here? It takes all of us to contact the product developement people at Round 2, Revell, even Moebius and tell them. If we keep contacting them telling them what we want to see then, maybe it will happen. That year Coronet is the only one that has not been re-done yet. Now is the time for the kit manufactures to seriously look into this subject matter.

Out of curiosity, since it's presumed the original body sections for the mold are long gone, a new body would be needed. Would you prefer to see the all-new '68 Coronet body combined with he existing AMT/MPC (Round muddied the waters with the '70 Coronet R/T) '68-'70 Mopar B-body underpinnings and a '68 specific interior? 9 minutes ago, GMP440 said: Round 2 has even gone into uncharted waters to do all new tooling for the 1967 4 door Supernatural Impala. That 4 door is all new tooling. Kind of. Parts of it are new-- body, front bumper/grille, interior panels, and so on. I will grant to you it was not a minor change/update, but the car is a huge part of a show which has a major following, especially in sci-fi circles, something which Jamie Hood from Round2 is acutely aware. Does any '68 Coronet have that same type of cross-genre appeal? 18 minutes ago, GMP440 said: Now is the time for the kit manufactures to seriously look into this subject matter. I don't see Round2 putting much effort into all-new automotive kits, so I think we can eliminate them. Revell? Maybe, as they have invested in the '68 and '69 Chevelle SSs (yes, pre-bankruptcy "old" Revell, but still), but I don't see Moebius taking this on, either.
GMP440 Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Casey states: "Out of curiosity, since it's presumed the original body sections for the mold are long gone, a new body would be needed. Yes, if Round 2 did an all new body and combined it with the existing Round 2 68-70 Mopar B-body underpinnings and a 68 specific interior; I would be fine with that. Casey , you asked about cross genre appeal; I guess you are referring to the car being used on a TV show like the 67 4 door Impala on Supernatural. The 68 Coronet would have little to no cross genre appeal In my opinion I think the 68 Coronet kit would appeal to model car builders whether or not it has any cross genre appeal. It's been a highly requested kit for many years
stavanzer Posted June 12, 2020 Author Posted June 12, 2020 George, I'm the OP. I applaud your reasoning. But the '68 Cornet is DOA. The ONLY reason IMHO, that you are seeing the More-Door Impala is the Sci-Fi crossover appeal. Frankly, this kit was not created or intended for us. It is mostly a creature of the TV, Sci-Fi community, and was made for them. That we Car Modelers get a new kit, is a nice Bonus for Round2, but not the reason for the tooling. Like much of the Coke Tie-in Kits, Builders are not the primary market. Collectors are the Primary, with us a nice secondary. When a huge TV/Movie franchise stars a '68 Coronet, then you can start agitating for one. Until then is (sadly), just another 52 year old, mostly forgotten, car. (one of many 50 year old forgotten cars, I might add. I'm still waiting for my '68 Jeep Pickup)
Snake45 Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 50 minutes ago, alexis said: ...is (sadly), just another 52 year old, mostly forgotten, car. Sadly, true. Back in the day, the car was largely ignored/forgotten in the shadow of the all-new Charger and Plymouth's Road Runner. Maybe Motor Trend tested one; I don't think it made Hot Rod, Car Craft, or High Performance Cars. The 6-pack '69 Superbees got some love, but the single most famous '68 Coronet was Dick Landy's. And even IT was soon playing Second Banana to his Hemi Dart and Charger. I've been reading Hemmings Muscle Machines and Musclecar Review for well over a decade and I think I've only ever seen one, maybe two, writeups of '68 Coronets in all that time. I too would like to build a model of at least one, maybe two (including Landy's). But we can't even get a decent kit of the iconic '65 GTO, so I'm not holding my breath for a new '68 Coronet.
tim boyd Posted June 13, 2020 Posted June 13, 2020 Interesting to see this thread and train of thought is still alive. Domestic model company personnel are aware that there is interest in a '68 Coronet R/T. Getting there from here, though, is not easy. I agree that a sci-fi connection would be a big plus, but lacking that would not totally rule out a newly tooled body to go with an existing kit tool innards. Especially if there were other spin-off kit versions that could be merchandised with the new body. Bottom line, in my personal view this one has transferred from the "never will happen in a million years" to category to the "unlikely, but these days you can never say never" category. Or stated another way, this would be an interesting thread to resurface five years from now and read again, to see what if anything has materialized. TIM
Force Posted June 13, 2020 Posted June 13, 2020 (edited) I for one is not that excited about the Supernatural Impala, it's a four door and four door cars are a lot "colder" among car enthusiast at least over here and the Supernatural TV series has not been aired here as far as I know...so what can you do with a four door Impala except for the Supernatural car...a family car, police car, fire chief car or taxi maybe. But I really like the fact that Round 2 DID a "semi new" automotive kit and I hope they will do more in the future as they have lots of possibillities for more cost efficient kits than to do them from scratch, like doing new 1961, 1963 and 1964 Galaxie kits based on the excellent 1960 Starliner tooling...I have mentioned this before but that must be doable as the 1960 Starliner is one of the newest tools they have in their inventory developed just before RC 2 bought AMT/ERTL, the 1967 Impala tooling the Supernatural Impala is based on is earlier but also from that late 90's early 00's era. Yes Round 2 have just re-issued the 1963½ Galaxie 500XL kit and it was maybe adequate back in the 60's when it was new but it's so wrong when you look at details and compare it with a real one...I do own a real one so I know. The 1964 Galaxie kits are either an old Craftsman curbside kit or a Modified Stocker so we don't have a decent one, the 1961 available to us now is also a Craftsman kit and the old 1961 Starliner tooling is most likely gone. Sci-Fi is maybe hot right now but there are more to modeling than that, the military side with aviation, tanks and other things related has been a large piece of the modeling hobby for many years, automotive may not be as large as those two but I think automotive builders are entitled to some new tooling kits now and then...more often than one every 15-20 years. Now when Revell is under new ownership who knows what they will do for new tools, the owner is European so who knows if they will do any new American car kits ever, the Asian manufacturers don't have much in that direction and the market there is so large that they don't have to go elsewere if they don't want to, they sell enough anyway. What's left...Moebius and Round 2. I don't care if they devote an entire production to Coca Cola or any other multi million company for collectors or any other connection as long as we get model kits, and a new one now and then wouldn't hurt. No need for comments from "naysayers" and "pessimists", I allready know what they will say as this issue has come up before. But if we don't ask for anything we will certainly not get it...that's the fact. Edited June 13, 2020 by Force
