JollySipper Posted June 4, 2020 Posted June 4, 2020 I don't think I have seen anyone do a WIP on one of these, so I thought I would show my progress for you guys. So far I've only been working on the engine. I sprayed it Krylon ColorMaxx aluminum, then muted it a bit with a mist of dark gray primer....... The red is more Krylon, then I picked out some details. I'll be doing it in black! Something different than the blue of the year car that the kit represents..... Thanks for looking, and comment freely!
kelson Posted June 4, 2020 Posted June 4, 2020 (edited) Should look good in black!is this the Amt kit or Revell?. Edited June 4, 2020 by kelson
JollySipper Posted June 4, 2020 Author Posted June 4, 2020 It's the Revell kit..... Is there much difference between the two? This is a really nice kit, not sure about the AMT one.... Oh, yea.... the red engine parts aren't glued yet, they need to be attached after the body and chassis go together.
Dann Tier Posted June 4, 2020 Posted June 4, 2020 Its VERY nice to see someone building this car!!....thanks for sharing!!!
JollySipper Posted June 8, 2020 Author Posted June 8, 2020 Hey, guys! Got the interior all done.... still need to do the spare tire. Again, it's not correct for the year Viper that the kit represents, but I thought it would look better two-tone than just gray.........
Dragonhawk1066 Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 Love the two-tone interior. Will be very interesting to see this one done in black.
Dann Tier Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 It looks OUTSTANDING!!!!....bugger the "Period correct" thing!
JollySipper Posted June 9, 2020 Author Posted June 9, 2020 Thanks, Guys! That interior is two shades of primer with clear over some of the dark gray that I wanted to look like leather........ Now I'm on to removing mold lines and such on the body, will post more progress soon......
slusher Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 Two interior looks great TJ! I have only seen red and black Viper engines never orange. I don’t know if I have seen an AMT Viper build..
JollySipper Posted June 9, 2020 Author Posted June 9, 2020 Carl, you gave me an idea with your post! I realized that I wanted something different for the painted engine parts.... I think this new color gives it a more modern look! I need to redo the exhaust manifolds with something more realistic.... Also got the body in primer today! All I had to do was remove just a few faint mold lines, deepen the shut lines some, and I removed the badges from the hood sides and rear bumper.... also put two coats of paint on the front to see how it was going to work out. The paint will get wet sanded, two more coats, then a wet sand followed by the clear.... I'm really enjoying this kit, and have a good feeling about this build..... Thanks for looking, and comment freely!
JollySipper Posted June 10, 2020 Author Posted June 10, 2020 Had a "spray day" today.... Unfortunately I had a mishap with the clear on the body. The clear I'm using has an application window that I couldn't stick to.... looks like I got a bit of crazing. It's just in the clear, so hopefully I can sand it smooth. If not, I may just strip it and start over. These things happen, I guess. However, things went fine on the hood and bumpers! I'll let them sit a while before I do anything else to them........ Anywhooo...... feel free to comment, and thanks for looking!
JollySipper Posted June 11, 2020 Author Posted June 11, 2020 Thanks, Carl! Well, I was able to save the clear on the body. I was concerned about sanding through the paint while trying to get the clear back smooth.... Then I remembered Ace-GarageGuy's tip on sanding complex shapes with Comet and a tooth brush. It knocked the crazing back smooth! Then I was able to re-clear right over it..... This is raw clear without any polishing done..... Gonna let it sit a while, wet sand with #2000, then polish it back to a shine. Whew! I'm just glad I didn't have to strip it....... Thanks, and feel free to comment!
JollySipper Posted June 11, 2020 Author Posted June 11, 2020 Thank You, Anton! I built this kit when I was in my late teens, the same problem I had then I still have, and that's with the decals..... The project budget didn't allow for any decal solutions, so I'm having to work without. They are two separate stripes, not together as one decal. To make sure that I could get them half-way parallel, I coated the hood and nose decals with lacquer clear, thus making them one decal..... At a later time I can come back with a setting solution (hopefully) and fix those on the bumper..... And I thought I would show a mock-up of what this beast is going to look like! Still have to polish the body, and get started on the chassis...... Thanks!
slusher Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Viper is looking sweet TJ I will remember the Comet and tooth brush tip.
dbostream Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 Looks great, I have always liked the Viper I have many in the stash but have not built one yet.
JollySipper Posted June 19, 2020 Author Posted June 19, 2020 Thanks, guys! Daniel, it's a really good kit, detailed but not overly complicated...... I've got the chassis done. A good guy here sent me the BBS wheels, which were black with the red outer rim. I brushed on a bit of Elmer's glue to act as a mask over the red trim that I wanted to keep, then sprayed them aluminum.... and a final test fit before I start the final assembly! I had to shave a bit where the body has to slip over the exhaust manifolds and little adjustments here and there.... Still need to figure out how to make a mask to paint the trim around the glass, and button up some things..... Thanks and comment freely........
JollySipper Posted June 21, 2020 Author Posted June 21, 2020 Thank you, fellas! I really got into this project, sadly it's almost done....... I wanted to detail the engine some, so I put in the PCV return line, power brake vacuum and throttle cables. and have pretty much finished the exterior! I decided instead of ruining things trying to put decals down the backside, I would just have them running down the nose...... All that's left is to paint and install the side mirrors, and place a couple logo decals, then it's on to under glass! Thanks for looking and comment freely.........
