The 1993 German movie is more realistic. The 2013 Russian flick is more spectacular but also more of a propaganda movie, IMO. It was directed by Fedor Bondarchuk, who also did the 2005 movie "The 9th Company" about Russian soldiers in Afghanistan. That one was made with the co-operation of the Russian govt., so has real vehicles like BTRs, HIND helicopters and T-72 tanks...which were never used in Afghanistan, but oh well. Bondarchuk's father directed the 4-part "War and Peace" back in the 1950's with a running time of about 3 days. If you can find it, a very realistic and downright harrowing WWII movie is "Come and See." About the war in Belarus between partisans and the Nazis. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091251/ I haven't seen any of those. I think my favorite WWII movie is still A Bridge Too Far. I've lost count of how many times I've seen it, at least six or seven. And I've read the book at least four times, maybe more. Reading the book always makes me want to see the movie again and vice versa. What a fantastic story that was, and the movie is very true to the facts/the book, even if it's only able to hit highlights of that epic battle.
Snake45 Posted October 14, 2020 Author Posted October 14, 2020 I've been watching The Third Day on HBO. Six episodes, the last one will be out next Monday. Very creepy and interesting. Recommended if you can get it. Just started the new season of Fargo on FX. I'm a Chris Rock fan and he's pretty good in this, but don't expect him to make you laugh.

This IS going to be good!

Had to google it to make sure.
iamsuperdan Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 Well, it's that time of year, so if you haven't watched last year's Haunting of Hill House, then do so. And then watch the follow up, Haunting of Bly Manor. Same producers and writers, a lot of the same cast, completely different story and characters. Both are creepy and excellent.
stinkybritches Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 I know the topic of this thread is Netflix, but Snake, I recommend The Shield if you haven't already watched it. In my opinion, it ranks right up there with Deadwood, Justified, and Breaking Bad. The only place that I know it's available with a subscription is Hulu, though.

I'm thinking of going back and watching Deadwood again. Also the last season of Game of Thrones. I'd watch Justified again if I could find it anywhere.
stinkybritches Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 The only place that I know of that has all the seasons of Justified is Hulu. They have all of the FX shows.
Snake45 Posted October 15, 2020 Author Posted October 15, 2020 I was afraid of that. I don't have Hulu and ain't gonna buy it. I have all the episodes of Justified on VHS, it would just be a matter of finding them and putting them in order.
stinkybritches Posted October 20, 2020 Posted October 20, 2020 In a Valley of Violence. An entertaining Western movie with Ethan Hawke and John Travolta. It has a bit of humor if you like that sort of thing.
Snake45 Posted October 20, 2020 Author Posted October 20, 2020 I just finished the sixth and final episode of The Third Day. Very weird and creepy! Last week I re-watched the final season of Game of Thrones and several episodes of Band of Brothers. At the moment I'm in the middle of episode 5 of Fargo on FX. Better than I expected it to be! Think I'm gonna see if FX has all the seasons of Mayans on it. I've never seen that.

Just started it this morning. Shows promise, looks pretty good. They seem to have the cars right (for late '70s). Among other things I saw in the first episode were a '68 Pontiac Bonneville and an early/mid-'70s Impala/Caprice wagon--with mags no less, possibly Cragars!
Snake45 Posted July 6, 2021 Author Posted July 6, 2021 I chewed my way through all 7 seasons of House of Cards. What a ride! Dunno if it's always been there, but a couple months ago I discovered you can jack up the speed on Netflix to 1.25 or 1.5 times. This is a wonderful feature and I wish all the streaming services had it!
Snake45 Posted August 14, 2021 Author Posted August 14, 2021 Someone mentioned Black Summer, possibly in a thread that got deleted for some unknown reason. WOW, what a thrill ride this thing is! I'm up to episode 5 and I'm hooked. Makes The Walking Dead look like a soap opera. (Which, come to think of it, it is, in more ways than one.)
Rob Hall Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 I do enjoy police/mobster movies and shows, just wrapped up Maltese on Prime/PBS..a recent Italian tv miniseries filmed in Sicily and set in Sicily in the 1970s. Lots of neat ‘70s Alfas and Fiats, great cinematography and music. Just started another one, The Hunter (Il Cacciatore), also Italian and filmed in Sicily, on Prime/PBS, but set in the 90s.

It's not the same, but if you liked Leverage/Hustle, Lupin is in the same space... best, M.

Another show I recently watched on Netflix or Hulu that I enjoyed was a neat German/Swiss caper called 'Allmen'... lead character was a jewel thief/bon vivant conman turned detective. Great scenery, and the lead actor looked like he was channeling early 80s Bryan Ferry w/ the suits and hair. Another crime drama I recent watched and liked is "The Mountain Detective" on Prime..great scenery in the French alps.
Tom Geiger Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 I don’t have Netflix. I’ve been watching the Turner Classic Network lately. Putting old movies on DVR.. ones I’ve seen long ago, some I’d never seen and ancient 1920-50s movies just for old cars and giggles.
Zippi Posted August 23, 2021 Posted August 23, 2021 One of the best series I watched was Blood Line. I told my wife to watch it and she loved it.
Joe Handley Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 I just closed out my Netflix account last week, don't think I've watched it since Mom passed last year and it was just a waste of $14/mo.
Snake45 Posted August 25, 2021 Author Posted August 25, 2021 Now I'm watching Queen of the South. I'm into the second season.

Snake45 Posted October 18, 2021 Author Posted October 18, 2021 (edited) I just finished all 9 episodes of Squid Game. The first episode is a little rough but it gets way better as it goes. Ends up being pretty darn good--not sorry I spent the time, especially since on Netflix you can watch things at 1.5X speed and save a lot of time. Edited October 18, 2021 by Snake45
Snake45 Posted January 21, 2022 Author Posted January 21, 2022 Ozark is back! Since it's been 2 years since I saw it, yesterday I reran eps 9 and 10 of Season 3 to try to get myself back up to speed. Really glad I did. Just finished the first ep of Season 4. They're back, with the pedal to the metal. Good stuff! 1
