landman Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 (edited) I rarely do race cars but now is the time to do one. I built a replica of my Mustang convertible a few years ago using the innards of the AMT Mustang GT. I was going to combine the body with the chassis of Neil Bonnet's car to create some sort of road racer à la Trans-Am. That plan bit the dust early. They are different scales. landman Posted January 16, 2021 Author Posted January 16, 2021 So, lo and behold, I have an extra '70 Boss 302. That one is in the right scale. There will still be some cutting and dicing required but it should prove feasible.
afx Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 Always interested in a race car build Pat, looking forward to it.

I was laying out my first cut when I realized that chassis had nothing Nascar about it. I looked in the box and the only thing Nascar in there was the body. Then it came back. I had used that car to build my version of Bobby Isaac's #71.
landman Posted January 16, 2021 Author Posted January 16, 2021 So I dug out my boxful of old Nascar builds. there will be something suitable in there.
Venom Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 (edited) This sounds awesome to me... I’ve got a GT350 coming up after my Daytona Coupe, so I’ll be checking in on this one regularly. Edited January 16, 2021 by Venom

Is your GT 350 a high end kit like that or one of the ordinary ones?
AmericanMuscleFan Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 I'm always impressed to see guys like you able to work on more than one project at a time! The point is to have a good time, isn't it? Beautiful project Pat, a good way to take advantage of old models that only ask to give the best of themselves! ?

Venom Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 Those are both very nice, but I particularly like the light blue one! Mine is the ‘66 model
landman Posted December 13, 2021 Author Posted December 13, 2021 And so, 11 months later, I am ready to carry on with this build. The cutting has begun with removing most of the inner fenders to clear the Nascar frame.
landman Posted December 15, 2021 Author Posted December 15, 2021 Removed more inner fender material. Cut a hood out of the Nascar hood.Shortened the frame in front.
Mattilacken Posted December 15, 2021 Posted December 15, 2021 (edited) Nice! Would love to buy such a stash of nascars, they are quite rare over seas, and I rarely find them even in auctions. Edited December 15, 2021 by Mattilacken
landman Posted December 16, 2021 Author Posted December 16, 2021 Adding stuff as I find it. Speaking of finding, after cutting up the Nascar hood I find this one, would be nice for a Hi-Rise manifold. Not sure whether I"ll use the Nascar engine or a 3D printed 427 or a modern Boss. I suppose the Nascar would be the most appropriate.
landman Posted December 17, 2021 Author Posted December 17, 2021 Added the rest of the cage, the fuel cell and took an outline of Earnhartd's wheel opening.
landman Posted December 19, 2021 Author Posted December 19, 2021 Looks like eberything is going to fit. Moved the pressure tank (is that what it is?) forward to clear the rear fender tuck-in.
landman Posted December 23, 2021 Author Posted December 23, 2021 (edited) Use what you got, they said. Added '67 front and rear fascias. A 3D printed 427 will provide some power. Hopefully, it will be enough. Edited December 23, 2021 by landman Spelling, as usual.
landman Posted December 24, 2021 Author Posted December 24, 2021 Looks like the engine will fit after all. Doctoring SBC headers with siamesed ports to fit evenly spaced Ford big block. I will use the bumpers from the Monte carlo as well as the rear spoiler.

Oil is pumped from the engine back to this tank, and then drawn back from the bottom. That is the concept of dry sump, in that the pump is always supplied from a gravity perspective. When we were building 1:1, the tank went where you put it, the battery opposite corner. 1
Bills72sj Posted December 24, 2021 Posted December 24, 2021 Cool project. I did some cutting and splicing on some Mustangs this last year. I made a 69 Boss 429. (never kitted) A 68 Shelby GT500 with a real 428CJ and an engine bay from a 67 Mustang. (the original AMT bay was HORRIBLE) And lastly, a 67 GT drag racer with a mini-tub job and a 427 SOHC motor stuffed in it (quite challenging)

Could I find them in the WIP & Under Glass Threads?

landman Posted December 27, 2021 Author Posted December 27, 2021 Added the front air dam from the Monte Carlo. And cut some "glass".
