89AKurt Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 ? New ATM at my bank, couldn't resist. Who remembers the ads for the first ATMs?
Classicgas Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 With the way many people drive, I think they need it.?
Xingu Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 Well, actually those could be for blind passengers in the back seat. The ADA, while not perfect, does make life a bit more normal for the disabled. The sign is a bit confusing though. I think it is because there is a driveway or intersection around a curve that can't be seen.
Danno Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 (edited) I've always wondered, and been a bit frightened by, the braille on drive-up ATMs. But, many, many years ago my mother worked for the state in its Aid to the Blind Agency. One of her duties was to help clients get driver's licenses. Now THAT made me nervous!!! ?? Edited May 15, 2021 by Danno
peteski Posted May 17, 2021 Posted May 17, 2021 There are several "blind driveway" or "hidden driveway" traffic signs in my neighborhood. yes, that indicates that the person trying get out of the driveway has no good visibility of the road. What I find odd is that there are Braille labels on that ATMs only "physical" buttons when in order to make a transaction all the other buttons are "soft" or "virtual" buttons on the flat smooth touch screen. Ignoring the fact that a driver would likely not be blind (one would hope so), the blind person would not have any way to complete the transaction.
youpey Posted May 17, 2021 Posted May 17, 2021 im sure they have the same ATM for drive thru vs inside ones. also, it has an audio jack, so probably blind person might be able to plug in for vocal descriptions?

I still don't see it. Even with voice descriptions, how would they be guided with a smooth touch screen? Plus even if they touched the screen, that could trigger some unwanted selection.

Doesnt look user friendly at all, but does look like they use the regular keypad, not the touchscreen Edited May 17, 2021 by youpey
peteski Posted May 17, 2021 Posted May 17, 2021 Yes, a regular keypad really needs to be there. But the original photo does not show that there is a regular keypad on that ATM. @89AKurt would have to chime in and tell us if that new ATM also has a regular keypad.

I've thought about making a long white stick with red at the end, park next to the sign, and have someone take a picture from behind, with me feeling the center line. Need to find a sign that has DRIVES. 13 minutes ago, peteski said: Yes, a regular keypad really needs to be there. Only the number keys are tactile. You can see the screen to the left showing "Do you want another transaction?" One has to go through many screen prompts, starting with English or Spanish, some screens have about 8 choices, the screen showing which way to insert the check is very important to me. And how would a blind person know exactly where that slot is, much less be able to tell which side is up? It must take about 20 times as long, if you're lucky. lucky 130 Posted May 19, 2021 Posted May 19, 2021 I spent 32 years servicing ATM's of every make and configuration. The brail, headphone jacks were not the banks nor the manufacturing company. the cause of both of those wonderful additives, was the federal government, and their laws re guarding handicapped persons.

Figured as much. It's like the steel railings on top of retaining walls along the freeways in Phoenix, no sidewalk in sight. I guess it's for the maintenance crews.
