Mike it’s not us but the formulas and thickness of the paint and atmosphere conditions. Now I will stop ? hijacking Bobs thread"

Carl......since this is my thread, a little hijacking never hurts when there's good info about paint on a Willys involved.  I've leaned a lot about painting on this forum but have yet been able to lay down a slick paint job like Mike's black Willys.  I'm going to apply all that I've learned on this build and like my granddaddy use to say, hope for the best and expect the worst.

First order of business was to cut the snap tabs off the hood.  I thought about cutting some pieces off the tree and gluing in the body to fill the cut outs but I elected to fill the openings in the body with Tamiya putty.  If for some reason this doesn't work out I can sand it down and try something different.

I'm looking at the engine on Big John's 41 Willy's and it looks like the block is painted black so that's what I'm going with.

Found a picture huh, yep, looks to be all black.   Looks like the kit wheels for the front are different than those in the picture, but I'm sure that varied at different times on the real car.

I found some other pics that show the block and heads being the same as the body.  Think that's what I may do.  Need to think about it.

I checked the Tamiya putty I used on the hood snap openings on the body this morning and all looks well.  The putty seems to be holding good after some initial sanding.  Need to do some final sanding to get the hood to seat better but I think it worked out well.

Pictures are from different years I’m sure. Go with the one you like the best look and you can’t go wrong..

Thanks Carl.  I got the block and blower painted with the new paint I bought.  Block was sprayed with Rust-Olem flat black primer then shot with Tamiya TS-8 Italian Red.  The blower was painted over the stock chrome with Tamiya TS-30 Silver Leaf.

The notch patching and paint looks great so far. I agree with you on the wheels, they varied a lot back then based on ref. photos.

On the Silver Leaf painted blower, I have found  TS-30 to be fairly delicate and easy to tarnish if handled so be careful when touching. If it was a large part I’d recommend hitting it with some semi-gloss or matte clear coat but you should be ok as long as you minimize contact with fingers.

Thanks for the heads up.

Different years may have had different block colors, but it appears they may have had different engines as well. The above photo shows an elephant Hemi. I am doing the same kit for the Cannonball ruse 2021 and it contains a 392 whale Hemi. Somewhere along the line I have seen a photo of this car with a red block 392.

Walt, I think your right.  There where probably changes on Big John's Willy's as time went on.  A frirnd of mine sent me this pic so I'm going with a the red block.  Not the same engine as the kit but I like the red.  Good luck on the Cannonball ruse.  Is there a thread going on this?

I got the blower and valve covers glued on this morning and also got my distributor cut, drilled, and wired.  A .058" bit is just the right size to drill out the distributor for the 9 wires (30 AWG) needed.  Trying to figure out what to do if anything about plug wire boots on top of the valve covers???  Anyone done these before that could chime in?

There is a thread under the Community Builds. I don't have a thread yet as I am still working things out in my head and parts kits. I am hoping to start building and a thread soon.
