I'm getting ready to put the decals on the hub caps.  I noticed it says Firestone on the whitewalls.  Anybody every try to highlight the letters?  How would one go about that???

If the area was down in the plastic it would work fine but the letters are raised.  I'm thinking the wash would just slide off the letters and make a mess.

What about your pencil stamp. Use acrylic so if it doesn't look good, wash it off.

That might work but I just got through looking at 53's online.  I didn't see a one that had the letters in any other color but white.  So, with that being said since this is a stock build I'm going to leave them as is but I do appreciate all the input.

Just took the Expedition to mecahinic to try to read the computor code. He couldn't get his fancy OBD reader to work either. He checked the fuses and all are good. He doesn't know what to do either, said maybe need to take to Ford. That ain't happenning.

Bob, I looked at the whitewall inserts in my kit and determined that the relief is too low, at least on the ones i have, to be of any use. i tried to bring out the lettering with craft paint and couldnt do ____ with it. i have built 2 of these and had not even noticed the lettering. how about sanding off the lettering and hit them with some flat white and call it a day? i cant say i have ever seen white walls with raised lettering.

The Firestone lettering could be done with a steady hand and a very small 000 type brush. This was once was somewhat of a fad at times in the past. In the mid-sixties you could buy a Crayola type of grease stick in different colors to do just this on your 1:1 car. This was before Raised White Letter tires were even thought of. Because of Firestones advertising had their lettering in red the guys that had Stones would paint in the name in red. I used either white or even a silver on my own tires. The fun part was you got to do it all over again whenever you cleaned your tires. While it didn't come off easily it would sort of smear when you went over it with any type of sponge or cloth when cleaning.

Dave I appreciate your input as well.  If it can be done with a steady hand it would not be my hands as coffee gives me the shakes to much.  I don't remember anyone in my neck of the woods coloring the letters on tires back in the day but sounds like it was a mess

It may have been a regional thing. I would go to PEP Boys for the markers. I worked in a service station so as prep for going cruising I would put the car on the lift so it was easy to move the tires into position. Sure beat laying on the ground. The white or silver would show up the best on black walls. When the '64 GTOs came out with the redline tires this went away, and we all wanted redlines after that so this would have been late '63.

Yup...that's why I don't remember it.  I was only 9 in 1963.

Lets just say I'm a few years your senior. To use a line from my late father, "I'm a young man trapped in an old body".

Another one of his bits of advice. "You can tell the men from the boys by the size of their toys" Funny how he seemed so much smarter as I got older.

I brought the 53 body inside for the night to let it acclimate to the temperature in the house.  I have my physical early in the morning but as soon as I get back I'll be hitting that flat white top with some clear lacquer.

I would use a  very light gray wash around them, which would highlight them nicely

Excellent work on this one so far Bob, nice color combination.

Thank's Dave.  Going over what paints I have on hand for the interior colors.  I have some white and mint green that might work.

Ok fella's.  It's 37° outside with 27% humidity.  I have the temp in the garage at 62°.  Both the body and the lacquer have been in the house (68°) since last night.  I took the can of Rust-Oleum lacquer out to the garage and sat it in a container of warm water for about 5 min.  Once the can was warm I brought the body out to the garage and stepped outside the back door of the garage and shot a light mist coat on the body.  I took it back into the garage and put a cover over it to keep dirt off the lacquer.  I waited 20 min and repeated the process.  That's all I'm going to do.  One this cures for 3 days I'll polish it with Novus 2.  If I was going to wet sand it I would have sprayed a couple wet coats.  It actually looks better than when I spray the lacquer in the summer time.  It turned out great so I'm a Happy Camper.  I was so worried that the cold weather was
