kuhnj Posted January 1, 2022 Posted January 1, 2022 For this years BRBO I am going to take the AMT Autocar dump truck kit and build a Leach 2-R Packmaster refuse body to go with it. Hopefully I can get this done by the end of the year. This is my first attempt at scratchbuilding, and I've only built a few big rig kits before this, so my expectations aren't super high. I'm excited to get working on this!
kuhnj Posted January 2, 2022 Author Posted January 2, 2022 Good day of work today, engine assembled and the frame is mostly together. In the picture the rear cab mount is in the wrong spot, caught that, it is fixed now.
DRIPTROIT 71 Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 Looks like this one is going to be a very cool project!
vincen47 Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 This is a great endeavor. I’ll be watching it take shape. I’ve always wanted to scratch build one similar myself, but I read a while back that Keystone had some refuse bodies in the works for 2022, (but no other details), so I thought I’d at least wait to see what they have in store. Round 2 is also bringing out the Garwood body. Are you planning 100% scratch or will you use parts from the Garwood truck?
kuhnj Posted January 3, 2022 Author Posted January 3, 2022 Thanks everyone! Vincent, I am going to scratch build the body. I always loved the look of the Leach pack masters, and they are relatively simple bodies. We'll see how it goes. Couple long days of building (having to quarantine helps) got some paint sprayed on the frame and cab. Will look pretty good with some light weathering. Will get paint for the engine and transmission once I am able to get out and about again.

OldTrucker Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 That is definitely green! The colors really pop! Have a feeling it's going to be a great build!
kuhnj Posted January 10, 2022 Author Posted January 10, 2022 (edited) Thanks all. Just got out of quarantine, so hoping to get paint on the engine later this week, that's the last major component to be painted. Meanwhile, I got the cab parts on, interior together and painted and couldn't resist taking some mockup photos. It's starting to come together. Interior is a pretty plain black and tan, highlighted the dash a bit. Not my best work but will be hardly visible when it is complete. Edited January 10, 2022 by kuhnj fixed spelling
Mopar - D Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 Nice progress Judah. What are you using to for the details to build the Leach body?
kuhnj Posted January 10, 2022 Author Posted January 10, 2022 Thanks Dan. Not quite sure, probably scale drawings (I'll make them if I have to) and styrene, brass. We'll see when the time comes.
gotnitro? Posted January 11, 2022 Posted January 11, 2022 The colors look great together Looking forward to the trash packer
Bowtienutz Posted January 11, 2022 Posted January 11, 2022 Judah, please as you go try to include the drawings nd reference material used in scratch building the packer it would be fun to build along. Finding reference material for projects like this is hard to find.

gotnitro? Posted January 11, 2022 Posted January 11, 2022 Auction sites have several packer bodies for sale , wish I'd saved the images of a few opened up. I have a local disposable company nearby , maybe ill allow me a few pics
kuhnj Posted January 12, 2022 Author Posted January 12, 2022 Yeah, those images are definitely going to be helpful. I think I can get some old Leach dimensioned drawings, so that will also be really helpful.
Mopar - D Posted January 14, 2022 Posted January 14, 2022 Judah if your able to get the drawings can you post them here for us.
doorsovdoon Posted January 24, 2022 Posted January 24, 2022 Sounds like a great project. Looking fantastic so far, can't wait to see the finished result.
kuhnj Posted July 29, 2022 Author Posted July 29, 2022 Didn't mean to let half a year get by, but this project got away from me. Getting back to work on it now, got the chassis pretty much done, just needs final assembly which I've been working on. Gonna make this a curbside model, so the engine is crudely painted. Getting ready to start on the Leach body. If anyone has any scale drawings they'd be willing to share, that would be appreciated, and if not I can make my own.
gotnitro? Posted July 31, 2022 Posted July 31, 2022 Looking good ! I'll pm ya some info I have for the Leach I'm using . Theres a few dimensions I've used for the major parts , the rest are web pics

Also got the final assembly pretty much done on the cab/chassis, needs a small bit of paint touch-up, and any bits I forgot will be added after the body is built. kuhnj Posted August 4, 2022 Author Posted August 4, 2022 Got the main bodysides cut out tonight for the trash body. Modified some plans for a 25yd body down to a 20yd body, thanks to Jeff for the designs.
