Okay! I'm in the midst of starting another project.......the Lindberg '63 Ford Cougar II (I know the box art says '63 but I believe the car is a '64 )

I've seen and have various pics of the car, but what was the true color of the car from back then? Some show a dark metallic red, while others show a bright solid red.

If any of you remember seeing this car (or have good pics) from the show circuit back then, I'd sure appreciate some info!

I'm tempted to just paint the car Krylon Banner Red and be done with it, to minimize drama.................we'll have to see. I'll post pics of the project this weekend------I've taken pics, but don't have them loaded on my hard drive and posted on Fotki yet. :D

Thanks in advance!

Bill, in this picture, (I am sure you have seen this before) it sures looks like just a nice solid medium red...nothing more, nothing less. If I were doing this car, I would use solid red, no metallic.

Yup Peter, that's one of the pics I have! :P In another photo the hue seems a little darker.

I think it was repainted a couple times Bill ,, not unusual for a factory show car back then.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too Steve. So either would be correct------the Lindberg box art car is done pretty well. In fact, I remember the "Those Famous Fords" box art car from Testor's years ago was painted a bright red.

That'll probably be what I'll go with so I can get rid of the rest of the Krylon! Over a dark gray primer should do the trick. :D

Thanks for the help guys!

Ya gotta post some pics of the build!

Be patient my friend! ;)

My computer is going to be undergoing some "down time" shortly as I'm waiting on new memory chips that are coming from Crucial.com.

I got an email saying they were on the Fed Ex truck so hopefully they'll be here sometime this morning. I'm going to be pretty busy with other things today and tomorrow after I get the computer up and running again, so I won't be posting any pics until maybe tomorrow evening at the earliest.

I'll have a total of 3 GB of RAM in this thing.........that'll definitely make it speedier than the 1 GB I'm running now! :D

This sould be an interesting project, Bill. According to American Dream Cars by Michel J. Frumkin and Phil Hall, the Cougar II was on the show circuit in '63.

Oh okay..............Lindberg was right! I stand corrected!

I've seen the car listed as both a '63 and '64 but seeing how the car was an answer to the then new Corvette Stingray, being a '63 would make more sense as Ford was quick to respond to markets in those days.

Too bad the car never made production-----it would have been a real screamer!

Bill, Harold ya'all may not know this but the engine was a 260, not a 289. Now to Ford folks that definitely puts the true age at a 63-4 early. Still, why did I M C mold the kit in a metallic red back in 1965 when the kit came out for the first time ? Ed Shaver

I've always thought that that was one of the best designed cars to come out of Ford, and I am quite sure you will do a fine job on the model.

What are you going to do for the wheels? I think the wire wheels from the Tamiya Jaguar are the best I've seen. JoHan included some nice wire wheels in some of their kits too. Even though I would rather have a set of nice photoetched wire wheels for such a build (the kit wheels are junk IMHO), most seem to have a lack of depth, and I haven't seen a decent set of front laced wheels in photoetched anyway.

Go for it, Bill.

I've never seen the 1:1 in person, but IIRC, the publicity shots from 1964 showed it in red, perhaps even metallic or pearlescent red.

Found this vintage shot of the car, at a construction site, and it's definitely red!

This is too cosmic! I just started a Cougar II as a result of my model club's white elephant gift exchange! I already swapped out the wires and tires for something beefier. Not authentic but looks great and is in the spirit of the thing. I will be gluing the doors and that rear hatch thingie shut. IMC kits and opening doors were not a happy marriage.

I did a little research and turned up this! The Bordinat Cobra is almost a clone of the Cougar II except a Convert. Both the Cougar II and Bordinat Cobra are still extant and in excellent condition. They were displayed at the Shelby American Museum. Most references to the Cougar II say it is Candy Red. There is a feature on it in Automobile Quarterly V2 #3 which I don't have. I will continue searching my Wall O'Mags. I know I have more info on it.

Meanwhile here is what I gleaned from the "series of tubes" , I mean internet.

Apparently the Bordinat car is built on a 427 coil spring chassis but has a 289 engine installed.

Bill, the Original Mock Up car(No Engine, just a Roller) that the model is supposed to represent debuted in '63, it was a Gloss Red with a Silver Top like on the box... The Functional '64 Show car was a Candy Burgundy Red(Almost a Brandy Wine Red), with a Silver top.... I also remember my Uncle telling me and showing me pics of the '64 driver, displayed next to the '63 Roller that was repainted white, with the same silver top.....

The Cougar II,Cobra, and Mustang Concept I all came about because of Bordinat.......

How the cars currently look......

I wanna build this one too!

I have the older (black/gray box w/photos) issue, and seeing the pics of the real car and the Bordinat Cobra, I want to build both. I'm glad this kit is getting reissued; IIRC it's a better Cobra 289 chassis than AMT's.

I saw the car at the Peterson museum in the 90's, it was plain red back then. I'm sure it's a repaint and earlier it wore a candy paint job. I'd be inclined to paint it something unique. The lines on this car are pure sex :)

Bill,

Here are some photos I took in mid-1997 at a show at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. I had to dig through the old photos and scan them in.

The lighting adds a yellowish tone to the stainless roof. Supposedly, the paint was accurate for the original issue. But, I have no expertise to confirm that.

O K folks, this means that the metallic red plastic that the I M c kits were molded in weren't too far off the mark especially for the day . I'm going ahead and doing the one I have had plans for since 199'? and do it in a translucent Red with an aluminum top. I can tell ya that the block was Black as were all the hi performance engines from Ford then. You might want to make sure to check that the oil fill cap is in the correct place as the 289's were on the valve covers. All the 260's I ever worked on had the oil fill cap on the front cover .

By the way, when I built the fit in 65, the working windows were a might tricky. Ya'all might want to rectify that as well as the door hinges . My feelings about I M C kits were , well mixed. I can say that at least you could assemble this kit . I certainly wouldn't say that about the Ford G T kits, whew...............

I am putting a 427 in mine! I was thinking SOHC but that would be too much work. B)

Thanks for all the help guys!

A lot of info I can certainly use!

As for the wheels Ron, I picked up a set of Herb Deeks PE wheels on eBay a while back------probably not the exact spoke count as the 1:1's on the Cougar, but they should do.

Stay tuned for a thread on the build later...............:P
