Monty Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 The mouse that came with my desktop finally died so I went to replace it, only to find that no one in my area carries the old-style "wired" version. I needed a replacement ASAP so I ended up buying a wireless Logitech mouse. For the most part it works OK but it kinda hesitates when I'm trying to click on a link etc. The arrow can take up to five seconds before it turns into the pointing finger that starts the process. Any chance there's a cheap. easy fix for this?
MeatMan Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 There are sensitivity settings you can change in the settings, and I'd look there first but I think it might be a connectivity issue. If possible, try a different USB port. Also, make sure to use a new battery. Though its not necessary, a used one might be on its way out. Good luck.
Keavdog Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 I won't use wireless mice. They aren't good for gaming. Newegg has a bunch of wired mice at reasonable prices https://www.newegg.com/p/0TP-00Z5-000B6?Item=9SIARTPCEX7824&Description=wired mouse&cm_re=wired_mouse-_-9SIARTPCEX7824-_-Product&quicklink=true

Expand Same here, and I really didn't want a wireless mouse for a variety of reasons...but I was in the middle of a project and HAD to have something immediately. Got a cheap Logitech M187, expecting little, and it's been brilliant. Only time it ever started acting up, kinda similar to your issues, was after a year when the battery was going away. New batt, no problem. Batteries DO go bad while in storage, or on the shelf, even the good ones, and even though the expiration date on the package may have years to run. Try a known good battery first, go from there.
Xingu Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 I have a rechargeable wireless mouse that I just keep plugged in. Best of both worlds.
SSNJim Posted February 2, 2022 Posted February 2, 2022 I've been buying wired mice at Ollie's and other off-brand stores. When I see them, I buy them whether I need them at the moment or not. They are getting hard to find, but they are still out there. I've been using wired mice since I put a Microsoft Bus Mouse in my PC XT clone. Wireless mice are great until they're not. The batteries only last so long, and they can be somewhat subject to interference. I've used wireless mice, but have never been satisfied with the experience.
Keavdog Posted February 2, 2022 Posted February 2, 2022 (edited) I swear by wired mice. You can find them at NewEgg. Gamers will not use wireless so they are around and plentiful - some of them way to expensive. The optical wired mice are great - the old ball mice not so much lol. You'd have to take them apart and clean all the lint and scum of the axis rollers. I had a true XT I bought from the company I was working for way back for $700 which was a fortune at the time but I really wanted a PC. I installed a V20 chip and it was 'super fast' lol. Leisure Suit Larry was my favorite game. I learned to program in C on the XT and a copy of Kernigan & Ritchie - made a career out of it. Edited February 2, 2022 by Keavdog
BlackSheep214 Posted February 2, 2022 Posted February 2, 2022 As a former PC gamer myself, I hated wireless mouse and ditched it. I prefer wired mouse for better control in the games.
Keavdog Posted February 2, 2022 Posted February 2, 2022 ^^^^ exactly. Wireless mice are for amazon browsers and social media queens.

I don't think you can still find those mice anywhere. Yes, they were pain, but were the only thing available back in 1990s. Actually , back then I used to repair Sun Microsystems workstations and Sun had their own 3-button mice. Even back then they were optical (not ball), but they also required you to use dedicated mouse pad. It was made of aluminum and had a fine grid pattern printed on it (for the optical sensors). The mouse did not work without that special mouse pad. I use wired mice, but I do have one Bluetooth wireless mouse. The batteries last pretty long, and when they get low, the LED indicator starts blinking orange. It is very reliable, except when it sometimes "unpairs" from the laptop, and has to be paired again.
Keavdog Posted February 2, 2022 Posted February 2, 2022 I worked with an engineer, brilliant guy, who would throw those mouse balls through the drywall in aggravation. LOL. I do remember the early optical mice requirements - but they were so precise. Do you remember the track balls - a paradigm shift that didn't take...

Expand Oh yeah, those "mouse balls" are actually large steel balls with a thin rubbery coating. They can do some real damage when flung hard. My GF actually had one of those trackballs and for years preferred it over a mouse. I tried it, but never liked it. And trackballs stink for gaming.

Your call Expand So glad for that insightful commentary. But here's the thing, sporty. I use tools that work for my needs. My cheap little wireless mouse does everything I need it to do just fine. Frankly, after using wired mice since the dawn of time, I was surprised by how well the thing works. And since it works fine for my needs at the moment, I see no reason to replace it until it doesn't. You just have to understand logic and adopt the rational solution. 1
peteski Posted February 2, 2022 Posted February 2, 2022 (edited) John, what you're doing is not welcome on this forum. I smell a thread lock, or worse. And you only have been around for less than a month . . . Edited February 2, 2022 by peteski 1
Xingu Posted February 2, 2022 Posted February 2, 2022 This place amazes/surprises/discourages me everyday. People here will argue about everything and anything. Please keep in mind that it is really preferred that everyone stays on topic. If someone asks a question, answer it and move on. You are not required to answer every follow up post because it does or does not match your way of thinking. Every post isn’t about you, you don’t have to take everything as a personal attack. Read the response and go on with your lives. You guys are really arguing about the type of mouse you use? Use whatever mouse you want and go build a model. Post some photos when it is done. That is really what everyone wants to see. That’s is why most folks came to this site in the first place. 3 1
