I think the repair work you did on that seam is outstanding - nice job hiding it and reconstructing the texture!

I thought about working through one of these skulls and laying in pieces of medical tape and airbrushing over THAT, but your way worked way better than I imagined it could.

Nice shading with the paint too!

Thank you Jim! I actually tried using some medical gauze to impress a texture on the putty but it didn't give the look I wanted.

Hello Everybody!

Here's a little more progress on the Mummy Machine.

The mummy head is the most visually prominent part of the model and how it looks really sets the tone and establishes the general character of the rest of the model. I wanted to go with something a bit more on the realistic side to balance some of the over-the-top opulence of the rest of the car.

Although the bandages look white I actually used Tamiya XF-12 J.N. Grey over the base TS-46 Light Sand. The skin is a mixture of Tamiya XF 68 Nato Brown, XF-52 Flat Earth, XF 15 Flat Flesh and XF-2 White. I just thought of the skin as leather then mixed and painted accordingly. The teeth are a mix of Tamiya XF-2 White and XF-15 Flat Flesh.

All of this was followed up with various washes and dry brush applications.

The directions call for assembling the mummy head on the car, placing and gluing the rear section to the floor, followed by the tongue seat and then the front half. I chose not to do it that way for obvious reasons. I'll just have to work out the final assembly details when the time comes.

With all this work accomplished I thought it was time to reward myself with a test-fit mockup. The body tub is currently in black primer but it will soon be painted in a beautiful gold.

Once again, thanks for taking the time to look and please feel free to post a comment if one feels the urge to do so.

Awesome painting on the Mummy David!  It would be so cool if the mummy had an eye..

Thanks Carl, I thought about lighting the inside with a red LED but I probably won't.

You did a mighty fine job on that mummy head Dave. Covered the seam up nicely and pulled off some very convincing paintwork/ shadowing on it.

Thanks Joe, I appreciate your kind comment.

Hello Everybody!

The test fit in the previous photo spread served its purpose and revealed a fit problem. It would seem that the driveshaft falls short of meeting up with the transmission.

MumyMchine_36.jpg.5bf068dea0d88c79c3d595feef6188d0.jpg

The source of this shortcoming is a misalignment of the rear spring. The slot it fits into is a bit misshapen, probably due to worn molds.

MumyMchine_37.jpg.5dc72c2345d892710ccb055fce3bece0.jpg

I filed out the slot to allow the spring to line up better and once I had it where I wanted it, I I held it in place with a styrene shim. Just to be sure it all stayed together and aligned while the glue dried, I drilled and pinned it.

That's all for this round, thanks for taking the time to look and please feel free to comment.

Hello Everybody!

Due to the age of the molds, this kit is in rough shape. It's not the worst I've worked with but it does require some extra effort to make it presentable. The radiator, a prominent visual aspect of the model, was a hot mess as far as fit and alignment goes. The seam where the front and rear halves come together needed to be built up and filed smooth multiple times using CA. It's just one of the things that needs to be dealt with when building kits with old molds.

So here's the end result. I have to say that I'm quite pleased with the way the gold paint turned out.

I was truly surprised by the Rustoleum gold paint. I've had bad experiences with this brand in the past but I'm very satisfied with the results this time around. Maybe I've just gotten better at working with it.

Of, course I had to reward myself with a mockup. The fender-puppies (sphinxes) are glued on but the rest is loose.

The next step is getting the cobras sorted and finished. Closer and closer!

As always, thanks for taking the time to look and please feel free to share your thoughts.

Nice to see something a bit unusual and 'off the wall' modelling wise. The paint job is remarkable and is the sort of thing that can make or break a model like this. Congratulations!

Thank you Noel. I do tend to lean toward quirky and unusual builds. But I take them seriously and  give them my best effort.

Pretty cool. I never realized how many cool little extra details were in this model. I love the intake the most.

Last year my younger son had a school project about Egypt. We looked everywhere for Pharaoh stuff without success. Looking at your model now, I

'm thinking "who would've thought? I could save myself a lot of grief with one visit to ebay".

The model looks great. At first I was thinking "Why so much red?", but now that you add all the artifact details is actually a really nice background color.
