That car, in that color, isn’t too far off what I pictured this build looking like from the start! 40s look great in blue and white! It’s reassuring to see from the pic you posted that even in 1:1 getting that chrome trim nicely aligned on the doors can be tough… Magnets, Jim. They will self-align the doors if you install them accurately. The tiny rare earth magnets. Ebay. I use .032 brass wire ( and you did too, right?) so there's a little flex. and the magnets will put the door where you want it. And yes, I agree they look great in those light colors.
espo Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Goodmorning Jim. Your question about a Buick engine in the '40 kit. The original issue and I think all of the other AMT '40 Coupes had the Buick as an optional engine. The 39'&'40 Sedan had AMT's vision of an Oldsmobile and I can't find my '40 Sedan Delivery build at this time to give you info on that. I like the way you have created the door and trunk jams as well as the under structures.

I have a bunch of these magnets…the doors seem like they close right into the correct position fairly well, but I may hide one in the trunk lid just to help it position properly… On 1/9/2023 at 12:35 AM, slusher said: Nice progress Jim, look real nice!! I like the way you have created the door and trunk jams as well as the under structures. Thank you for the info - I actually have been stealing parts from the ‘woody’ kit (that isn’t a woody) for this build so I should take a look and see what engine is in that one…will report back! Some minor progress, seeing as I’m replying anyway… Designed and printed the leaf spring for the front axle - I made them one assembly for now but I can separate if I need to later on: Whilst the printer was running, I tweaked the wheel design and reprinted those, printed some headers for the Flattie and an intake setup: Check out the detail on those carbs! I stripped the chrome on a few bits whilst the printer was running, and then broke out the resin supplies and cast some brake backing plates: Need to fix or remake the one with the ‘short shot’, but nothing major… And I also needed to do something about the half-hollow rear axle so I cast a Quickchange initially… …but it interferes with the leaf spring and I don’t want to TOTALLY re-engineer the suspension if I don’t have to, so I found this whatever-it-is in the parts box and it’ll work just fine: These axles are hard to improve without totally redoing those big clunky ‘brackets’ where where the linkages meet…I’m going to do my best to get those more in scale though without cutting everything apart and starting over. Need to add a u-joint to that axle still but it’s a start… Lots of little jobs done, but nothing that amounts to much - sometimes it be like that! More soon, soon as I’ve done more…I wanna get the frame figured out this week hopefully so I can keep on rolling (pun not intended) Edited January 11, 2023 by CabDriver 4
OldNYJim Posted January 12, 2023 Author Posted January 12, 2023 A little more this evening (I’m motivating myself to keep achieving some stuff every night so that I have something to post - it works pretty well!) Working on the front end this evening, getting some mock-up done and making sure the wheelbase is still correct after some parts-swapping: Used my 3D printed front axle, the linkages from the kit (albeit modified to remove the steering link, which I’ll be re-making) and a little modification to the frame so it all aligns nicely come assembly time… I didn’t want to modify the frame too much, so I’ll be relying on some classic rubber rake to get the stance I’m looking for. I need to figure out the exhaust, so I got the engine mocked up somewhat: And seeing as I was doing that anyway it’s a good chance to check the fit is ok again with these extra pieces in there…still good! As you can see I’ve been doing some cleanup on the body too, but still some more to do on that before I can try another cost of primer… And that’s another hour’s progress at the bench - next jobs are finishing up the work I started on the axles, cleaning up the frame and figuring out those headers…and maybe getting the body far enough along for paint this weekend. More soon, thanks for looking! 5
Slotto Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 Looking good. I really like that engine. Great job on the 3d printing. 1
customline Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 I agree with Steve. I'm loving that quartet of 97s. Can't wait to see it in paint. 1
Bainford Posted January 12, 2023 Posted January 12, 2023 Things are coming along nicely, Jim. I'm loving that rack of carburetors. 1
slusher Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 Did your yellow chassis have a molded in exhaust? 1

Yes sir…I replaced the floor with some sheet and I’m just figuring out the rest of it now…was messing with the start on some simple peashooter pipes today… In more exciting news though, I finally got the body smoothed out and ready for paint… Actually, I still had a couple of rounds of tweaking and fine-tuning to go when that pic was taken, but I forgot to take a ‘final’ primer picture… And this morning I mixed up some paint. I had always imagined this being a kind of light duck-egg blue but I spent some time yesterday morning hunting through all the colors at Hobby Lobby yesterday and didn’t find quite what I imagined so I mixed it up myself. Color is a blend of Createx white, light blue and gray in roughly these proportions: Came out something like this: I also prepped and primed a bunch of parts this weekend, so expect to see some paint progress this week…still have to figure out the interior but it’s getting closer! Thanks for looking - more soon, soon as I’ve done more! 4
Tarkmucker Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Looking good man. I’m excited about this one. I love 40 fords and have a few in progress. This is making me want to get a couple of mine back in rotation
Slotto Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Looking good Jim. This makes me wish that I open the doors on my convertible
David G. Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Lots of great stuff going on here! I always enjoy watching your builds come together, thanks for taking the time to share it with us. David G.
TarheelRick Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 That color really looks good on that body. Not too in your face, very subtle, but still very noticeable. Keep these updates coming.

Next couple of days progress…I looked at a bunch of blue ‘n’ white early sixties 40s and sometimes they can look a bit more ‘custom’ and a bit less ‘hot rod’. So, today I spent some time messing with some door numbers…tried a bunch of ideas and settled back on the simplest one by the time I was done. Cut some masks: And shot my favorite opaque white, Tamiya matte acrylic. I think I like it! A little unusual, but not too radical for the era I’m going for, and stops it being just another blue traditional hot rod. Makes me think of an oval car, which is ok by me…I love seeing a little oval influence on a hot rod just as much as a drag influence… Once the paint has dried thoroughly I’ll start shooting some clear and getting ready for the polishing stage. Meanwhile, started some work on the interior…used a square pattern Evergreen sheet to make some faux diamond upholstery for the doors and seat inserts: And whilst the glue was drying 3D printed some little window cranks and door handles: Actually, I printed a bunch because I always seem to need door handles… With that done, I resin cast a Moon gas pedal, made a simple clutch and brake pedal (which I’ll accessorize with some photoetch when they’re painted) added some trim to the seats to finish them off and ended up about here: I’m going for an all-white interior, no two-tone…maybe a darker carpet color. Still plenty to do, but it’s all progress! Thanks for looking everyone! 4
customline Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 I really like your interior ideas. I think I'll go evergreen shopping. I reeeeeeeealy like those window cranks. I'll bet there's a big market for those ?. Good progress, Jim!
David G. Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 The interior looks fantastic! Monochromatic interiors are always more of a challenge, not having the color variations to pick out details. David G.
slusher Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 Great looking interior, Jim and your really improving this very plain kit!
Dennis Lacy Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 Just read through this whole thread (this place is much better for WIP’s than IG) and I have to commend you on what you’re doing with this awful kit. I have one that someone gave me a few years ago and even for free I’m not convinced it was a good deal! ? But, seriously, this is turning out really nice. I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished result. One small critique: You might think about mounting the front ends of the rear radius rods to the frame because it wouldn’t work out too good with them attached to a live driveshaft! ? 1
bobthehobbyguy Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 Great paint color. Nice work improving a so-so kit. I like that you use the best technique for your project. 3d printing and scratchbuilding depending on the need.

Sometimes that can be an advantage (it’s easy to hide a not-so-great interior by just shooting it black), but I’m gonna go white with this one so adding some texture will definitely add a little… On 1/19/2023 at 7:48 AM, slusher said: Great looking interior, Jim and your really improving this very plain kit! And thank you too!! I’ve been plugging away at this thing some more, had a few little projects to handle before I can get down to some serious painting. First up, these 40s have a couple of crossmembers or braces in the trunk that I wanted to add…the kit design doesn’t allow me to easily replicate them exactly, as best I can tell, but I made something inspired by the real part anyway… That little peg on front holds the spare wheel… Made a headliner - laminated some styrene sheet to get it to match the curve of the roof then added some more of that thin diamond sheet styrene to make it match everything else… Designed and printed year-correct license plates…the tagline on the bottom references the 1940 World’s Fair but I’m not sure if that’ll be visible after paint…it was tough even getting a photograph of it ? Designed and printed some friction shocks too - I forgot to get a ‘studio’ pic of these but here’s one on my finger… I was gonna make a little Lady Liberty to hide in there somewhere - maybe on the dash as an East-coast take on one of those dancing hula girls but getting one to scale is tricky. Here’s my smallest successful print so far, but it’s way too big for the project (but still tiny!) And the rest of the last couple of days was spent prepping and priming stuff…not the most exciting work, but it’s nice to be able to batch up a big group of parts and make some serious paint-progress…this is one of four racks of parts currently in progress… Thanks for looking…more soon!
