There is other TD Tooling Atlantis SHOULD have that would be more desirable......but I am pretty sure PIE tooling is in great shape and ready to run with little investment.  Honest Engine is my pick for a rare TD repop!!!!! Thx

Pie Wagon should appeal to a wider group of buyers, though.  I was in a Joann store the other day; they had several Atlantis kits but nothing with particularly wide appeal (big Monogram midget racer, Jungle Jim Camaro, and Mack Bulldog truck).  The TD stuff should jump off of the shelves at those stores.

So having never built or seen one, I have a question on the pie wagon. Is it a V6, flathead, or a V8 with headers into the side pipe assembly?

Flathead. Not sure which iteration of the Flattie, but it's definitely that engine (with a 3-speed manual, IIRC... last one I built was the 1986 (!!) reissue).

And, as is typical of Monogram T.D. kits the Flattie has very few parts, (6 or 8 )but all are heavily engraved for lots of visible surface detail. It is a nice, easy to build kit.

Sign up for JoAnn's coupons and you can get 50% off those Atlantis kits. I just got the Mack....a DEAL!!!

What John said, and for what it is (e.g. a typical Mattel era oversimplified engine), it's a pretty nice Flathead, too.  TB

The IPMS National Convention is in Madison, WI. I am heading there tomorrow :)

    I like pie.      image.png.b20dc3d071a92f5ab08294aa2af97319.png

EDIT: Seriously, I always wanted to do something based on this body shell, and have a couple incomplete gluebombs just for that. However, I had no idea the kit had a flathead engine, as my bombers don't. Guess I gotta get one too.  :D

I remember how elated I was when the Pie Wagon was reissued in 1986. At that point it'd been 18 years since its original release -- that's an eternity to one who's 16 ! Haha.

A neighbour had the kit - the 1968 issue - and it along with its box art enticed me. I was 6 or 7 when I first saw it ; my neighbour (10 years my senior) built it back then.

I had to have one !

Its box art wasn't even close to being as cool as the 1968 original (typical bland 1980's stuff), but the contents were there.

I'll hafta git one this time 'round.

Monogram probably used patterns from earlier kits to create engines for the Tom Daniel show rods.  They weren't repetitive with details like that.  The Tijuana Taxi has a Pontiac mill similar to that in the original issue '34 Ford, the Dragon Wagon and Paddy Wagon have Ford FE engines that resemble the '58 Thunderbird mill.  Daniel seemed to be accommodating Monogram's tool designers by selecting engines that were based on previous kit designs.

And S'Cool Bus over size HEMI's are cloned from a old dragster Monogram did.....why they are so big!!!

I would like one.  I wonder if they have the tooling for the Tijuana Taxi?

Revell did a re-tool of the TJ Taxi a few years ago. Fresh Tooling was cut. However, I don't think Atlantis got it and Ton Daniel has sworn that he won't work with Revell, so That tooling may sit unused for a long time, before it sees the light of day again. Sad, because I put off buying one of the new ones when they came out, and missed my chance to have one.

Pete (Atlantis' owner) was part of a "Industy Prospective" panel at the IPMS Nats (along with people from ICM, Eduard, etc) and he said that over the years since 2018 they've come to realize that Germany ended up with several items that were supposed to go to Atlantis and vice-versa so the two have been working on swapping tooling back and forth. One of the things that Pete wants back is the rest of the Tom Daniel stuff so that it makes a complete "set". It doesn't sound like Revell isn't amenable to that, it's just a matter of bartering back and forth. Atlantis apparently got over 600 pieces of tooling (across multiple genres of subject matter) in their acquisition and have only opened around 240 of them so far.

That’s a lot of tooling.

Agreed, and the 3 staggered-height carbs with custom scoops are very well done and make for some real eye candy!
