bobss396 Posted October 8, 2024 Posted October 8, 2024 I was moving cars around last night around 9. I'm on my front walk and 2 small raccoons walked right up to me. I jumped out of my skin since I hadn't put the front light on. When the motion activated lights on the garage came on, they split.
bobss396 Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 Not my yard, but out east on the Island. They have had a buffalo herd for years. There were little ones and huge males that were hanging out in the distance. We couldn't get any closer than this. 4
Falcon Ranchero Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 Freakin' mole still at it again at my grandma's. Before it was just some small mounds here and there but now it's like a dump truck left a pile of dirt on her lawn; can't reach a hose back there as her lawn(s) are very big, more like a field that just gets mowed. All I can do is just come around the time it starts pushing up dirt and cut it up with a shovel.

Back when I was a young teen we had a dog that would dig up the moles she found and leave them on the doorstep! Kinda like a cat would, but for a different reason...... 2
Tabbysdaddy Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 Water. Lots of water. The hurricane hasn't even made it to me yet. The garage is to the right and has started taking in water. My house is a good three to four feet higher. 1

Tom Geiger Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 (edited) This is Jimmy. He lives in my yard. I feed him broken nut bits every day. I leave them in two different spots on my deck. I can sit in my chair and watch him check out the locations. He isn’t afraid of me as long as I don’t make any quick motions. Edited October 9, 2024 by Tom Geiger 2

Ace-Garageguy Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 (edited) A citation from the county code enforcement. Seems an anonymous Karen has nothing better to do than to count the cars in my driveway, and complain. First time in 10 years there's been an issue, and it's not like there's an HOA, or like this is a particularly "nice" neighborhood, or like I'm the only one within a block who's in multiple code violations too. Not hard to comply, no big deal...but it's just one more reason for me moving to a part of the country where neighbors are far away and mind their own business. My property out West is zoned commercial including being grandfathered in for mechanical and body/paint on cars, and it's where a man's home is still pretty much his castle anyway, and he can do what he dammmm well pleases on his own land. johnyrotten Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 This morning one of my old lady's bird feeders was bent over pulled to the ground, and both my dogs are extremely curious of that spot. Hope there isn't a bear hanging around.

rattle can man Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 It could be something else, Deer like birdseed. I once caught mama deer batting my feeder with her nose and her two young ones eating it off the ground. 2

We watch deer eat out of the birdfeeders in our neighbors yard across the street on a daily basis. 2

SSNJim Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 We've had something steal our bird feeders. They go missing in the morning, and later we would find them 20-50 feet away in our woods. I suspect deer, but it could be racoons though I would think racoons would drop the feeder and eat it near the post. The deer seem to have a taste for our plants and flowers now. I did rig a retainer for the bird feeders so that they don't go missing anymore. My wife keeps her birdseed bags in a traditional galvanized garbage can next to her shed. We had something get into those, so we started putting broken slate blocks on top. That stopped that, until one night she forgot to put the slate on. I go out later, and the lid is off, so I just put the lid back on with slate. In the morning, she goes out to feed the birds and comes back in livid. There were two racoons in the can that had been there all night. I go out and sure enough there they are. I put the garbage can on its side, and one racoon took off like a shot. The second one seemed a bit traumatized. I did some gentle coercing to try and get him out, so I let him be and went in the house. When I checked an hour or so later, he was gone. No, they didn't eat all the seed in the can overnight, but they did look a little plump.

So a little update on this, my wife happened to show me a Facebook post of a black bear spotted about 3/4 mile away. Thankfully not a giant sloth.(joke) I live in one of those areas where I'm in the woods( my own private paradise) yet I'm 2 minutes from civilization. All of the deer we have around usually just empty the feeders out, not damage them. This was a 3/4 inch steel shepherd's hook. all in all, first time in seven years yogi decided to visit, I'm more concerned for my dogs as harley is trained off leash. That's a possible situation I would not care to take part in. As me and my wife say "it always an adventure". Thanks for commenting everyone, it's been fun reading all the responses. 1
bobss396 Posted October 13, 2024 Posted October 13, 2024 I have been finding these spiny seed pods in my front yard. I'm here 38 years and this is a first. I have around 20 of them. I looked it up quick, some sort of weed seed pod. 1

Don't rule out Possums as well. We have had similar issues with our bird feeders over the last couple of years and have seen Racoons raiding the feeders as well. 1

My driveway is about 400 feet downhill from the house. That morning I stopped to throw a bag out, opened the lid and it was trapped in the empty dumpster. Grabbed a decently long branch off the ground and gave it a way out. Must have been interesting for the raccoon, it was for me. The joys of living in the woods. TonyK Posted October 14, 2024 Posted October 14, 2024 A dead mouse in a trap I set out last night. Go out before dark to put traps back in the shed before I let the dogs out and there it is. ? Been chasing a mole around for a couple of weeks so maybe this will be my lucky day. 2
