Went for a morning cruise on the fourwheeler in the bush behind my grandma's house and saw a porcupine. Chased him down the gully then took refuge under the remains of the '53 Chevy 210 that's down there. Figured I better let him alone

aeound a dozen red-wing blackbirds.

These are shore birds by me, one will show up now and them by me. They have a distinctive call.

They are also smart. I saw one hold a peanut in one claw and peck it apart to eat them. I never saw any other bird do this.

The blue jays swop down often to take a peanut and fly over to a nearby tree or sit on the split rail fence and peck away to get the nuts out.

Some time back, I watched a small hawk sitting on my mailbox, holding a squirrel in one calw while he ate it.

How do you do that? Try to kiss the thing? Trip and fall face-first on it? Try to use it for a comb?

Wow, that's rough! Life as a wild animal, I guess? We have a pair of red-tail hawks that live in the woods behind me. You can hear them screeching once in a while. There's also more crows around, as the mockingbirds that run them away have pretty much left for winter.........

I have seen coyotes come out of the woods behind my house early in the morning and late in the evening...I keep an eye out when I have my dogs out, as they could easily scale a 4ft fence.  Lots of wildlife even in suburbia...

My 2 acres extends into the woods, beyond the woods is a park, a golf course and a subdivision..

Yeah, we have coyotes around here too. I don't see them often (only 2 daytime sightings in the yard since 1999), but occasionally hear them communicating at night..

I'm on a wooded lot, so the cats can go up trees to get away from 'em, but raccoons can climb almost as well as cats, and though 'coons usually won't go after a full grown cat, they will take kittens. And we have several big raccoons.

I heard one of my feral kits screaming one night, went out to see what the h. was going on, but by the time I found her and chased Rocky off, there was barely enough left to bury.

I hear coyotes almost every morning when I take the dogs out. It's early and still dark. Once in awhile my dogs will stop and listen but usually they pay no mind and do their business so they can go back in to get their treat.

In my yard today: Luckily I just happened to be home this AM when the county code enforcement officer showed back up to count my cars again. Nice guy, and working with me as I find them off-property temporary homes.

He's just doing his job, and he's not being a hind-end about it, so OK, and it's the first time in 10 years at this address there's been a problem.

But why it's anyone's right to tell me how many vehicles I can have on my property, so long as they're not up on blocks with chickens living in them, is quite beyond my comprehension.  B)

Sounds like an excellent idea for a diorama...

My girlfriend was driving home from work, she works out east and takes the back roads to avoid traffic. The area is pretty rural.

She comes up on a hawk who was tearing apart a live bluejay.. she stopped and the hawk looked her in the eye.. like she was next.

Nature's cruel. Even the sweetest housecat will gleefully torture a small rodent or bird for hours.

Eventually they eat most of them, but I've never understood the penchant for torture, and it's the only thing I don't like about cats.

Lotta things I don't understand about humans either though, and humans supposedly have the power of reason and conscious compassion.

Not sure about your area, but here code enforcement CANNOT go/look under a cover to "check" a vehicle. I actually managed to get the building/zoning guy in some trouble back when I was 18 for that exact reason. Since your guy's working with you, might not be that big of a deal.

I see hawks and the occasional bald eagle, cool birds to watch. These things, however are everywhere there happens to be roadkill. Turkey vulture.

the only other birds of prey around me are hawks and owls but they are smaller than folk think. the seagulls are bigger than most of them. its impressive to watch them hunt though they miss more than nature documentaries would make us believe, lol

Stepped out to check the mail today, and the across the street neighbors cat ran out from my front flower bed. When looked to see what it was doing, I found this. 20241105_093024.thumb.jpg.dbce2200271afead6547ee93a2bcd70d.jpg
