Lots of good information guys, thanks to those that did a deep dive. I use almost exclusively Tamiya paints. The discussion I had with my LHS suggested that they would NOT be able to get Tamiya paints anymore. One more shipment on the way and that’s it. So I did what any good Canadian hobbyist would do… panic buy!! Should be good for a few years now, bank account, not so much….

When Testors dumped the Model Master line, I bought up every bottle and can of "buffing metalizers" I could find before the prices went insane.

I'm pretty well set until the end of the world.  :D

At the time the metalizers were being discontinued, unfortunately, I wasn’t building much, or as connected to the hobby knowledge as I am now. As such, I was not able to stockpile those. ??? I miss those paints, I have a tiny bit of magnesium left and then that’s it…

I have maybe 2/3rds of a can of red oxide primer and an almost full can of the fine grey primer. Those were about the absolute best imo and one of the biggest reasons for using Tamiya paints to begin with. I’m still a bit above amateur level in the hobby, I don’t have an airbrush, nor some of the other fancy items like a paintbooth or a dehydrator. So this will be a kick in the pants ( hopefully short term) for people entering the hobby in Canada! I guess once my supply runs out I’ll be limited on any further finish work. I’ll have a bench of white mockups lol.

I just returned from vacation to find the Tamiya news. I was most concerned about the primer, so I immediately trotted off to the LHS to stock up. The proprietor tells me the ban does not include primer. Not much on the shelf because people are panic buying anyway (as I did), but assures me primer is not included, and he has more on the way. I've not read this elsewhere, but hope it's true.

I don't know what's with governments nowadays, we have suffered from the same thing with the Tamiya panel line colors, they are banned here in Sweden since this summer.
If it was large quantitys I can maybe understand it, but for gods sake, it's model paint and it can't be that much we're talking about, for the panel line colors it's maybe a couple of gallons in total in the whole World and for spray paint it can't be much either.
It would be interesting to see the volume Tamiya makes each year of said products total, it has to be significantly small volumes compared with other paint manufacturers and for panel line colors, a bottle of 40 ml last several years.
Are the governments trying to kill this hobby or what?? Because they do the best they can to do it...it's hard enough to get people into it without this to cope with.

I remember how stunned I was when I was punched with the news (to me) that denatured alcohol is banned in California (as of 2008 or so). Arizona came to my rescue (not only with the denatured alcohol, but also with "49 State" brake cleaner and carburetor cleaner - you know, the stuff that actually cleans brakes and carburetors, respectively).

Perhaps I should "panic buy" some of the Tamiya aerosols and Panel Line Accent, as "someone" may get some ideas and ban those, too.

Trevor, this goes contrary to the information that Borgfeldt shared with me.

I hope this might be of some assistance to individuals who live close to Toronto who might still be looking for some Tamiya spray cans. Advance Hobbies (Parkway Mall), which is a small shop that caters to mostly RC, has the pictured amounts still.

just heard about this news, pretty disapointing to hear this.  I exclusively use tamiya spray paints.  I much prefer them vs airbrushing.

It does sound like it may be a temporary issue while they sort out labelling/forumulation.  I'm hopeful anyway.

as well, I imagine we canadians can buy from Ebay still.  More expensive, sure, but for the time being that should work.

Then it comes down to, Will the items be shipped to a purchaser whose address is in the "no-go" zone.

Case-in-point : I purchased a can of denatured alcohol from a store in Arizona. Sell went through just fine, but...
"[We] cannot ship your purchase to [your state] due to restrictions on the sale of [denatured alcohol] in [your state-of-residence]. "

My only recourse was to get denatured alcohol from out of state after I'd discovered that a certain appointed-position legislative , state-funded "board" had banned D.A. in 2008 !
But, no one would ship it to my address.

Eventually I got my D.A. (along with some other banned-in-"Golden" State chemicals) upon my trip to Arizona the following year.

Good point.  I used to buy Tamiya enamels (yes, enamels, not acrylic) paints from Japan on Ebay, and always received them.  (I may have just gotten lucky) Canada then started allowing the sale of Tamiya enamels starting a few years ago, so I now get them from my local hobby shop.

Strangely though, Tamiya enamels are not allowed to be sold in the US.  Tamiya sprays are fine in the US, now not fine in Canada, while their enamels are allowed in Canada, but not in US?

I think I'll just let this play out for the next while and see what happens!

IMO. Just one of those coal burning Deisel Pickup Trucks spew out more pollution than all of the Tamiya Aerosol Cans in the world.

Was speaking with a manager at my preferred hobby shop.

Apparently, the ban is spreading to other countries now.

Tamiya is going to need to figure this out for sure.
