Bullybeef Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 (edited) Time for something completely different from my bench. I’m going to make an attempt at Revells 2007 release of the 49 Mercury. Went into the crypt and dug around til I found this kit, bought on a whim a couple of years back. I’ve previously opened and made a start a while back but a damn bench squirrel popped up and I chased him down the 32 ford path. While I really dig the Mercillac concept I’m really not sure if I’ll use the kit engine or not. So follow along on this new adventure for me and if you have comments, tips or tricks please let me know. First hurdle I have to overcome is the fact that it has a full body so I’ll have to really step up my paint game. Edited October 4, 2024 by Bullybeef 8
Andrew McD Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 Hi Bill, I built this one last year and found it to be a nice kit. I'll be watching to see where you go with this onel Have fun! Andrew 2
Rod666 Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 I love the Shoebox, what's the plan for the color? 1
NOBLNG Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 I’m along for the ride too Bil.? I recently built one, and I agree, it is a really nice kit.? The only part that doesn’t have real nice locating points is the sidepipes. 1

Well so far it’s pretty nice for fit and such, doing some cleanup of parting lines on the body( not a lot so far). I’ve been doing some looking around at finished ones here on the forum and the ole interwebs, think I have some ideas.

TopherMcGinnis Posted October 5, 2024 Posted October 5, 2024 This was one of the 1st cars I airbrushed. Its also the 1st one i polished on. It's a pretty easy kit to build. Another one that has endless possibilities. I got one of the Lazy Modeller flame masks and a scallop mask for a couple other kits in the stash. 2
jaymcminn Posted October 5, 2024 Posted October 5, 2024 I built this shortly after the kit came out. It's honestly a fantastic kit. The nice thing about it being basically "shake and bake" is that you can concentrate on finishing and customizing without worrying much about the basics! 11

Bullybeef Posted October 5, 2024 Author Posted October 5, 2024 (edited) Ok I started with cleaning up the mold lines and seams on the body first? That consumed some time( I was also doing research on colours and engines) while the whole ohv caddy in a merc intrigues me I’m not a fan of it not being ford powered. Bullybeef Posted October 5, 2024 Author Posted October 5, 2024 First surgery, removing the battery from the engine bay, like I mean what customizer would leave that chunk of ugly in a clean engine bay? 3
Bullybeef Posted October 5, 2024 Author Posted October 5, 2024 After some parts box searching I have come up with an engine soloution! We will have a Ford/Mercury drivetrain after all. Found a spare engine in the leftover parts AMT 1960 Starliner kit I did a year or so back, so my Merc will be powered by an Early FE as they went into production cars in 1959. That’s puts in the 60’s era for a custom. So much for box stock hahahahha. The auto trans was pirated from the AMT 31 Willys with the big block cammer ford. I think it would represent a C6( please correct me if I have erred). 4
customline Posted October 5, 2024 Posted October 5, 2024 The FE was available in '58, Bil. Ford had a 332 but there were other versions in Mercury and Edsel cars. I figured you would want a warmed-over flattie in your tail-dragger. ? 1
espo Posted October 5, 2024 Posted October 5, 2024 Like the FE engine idea. The cu. in. can be whatever you want it to be. If you have the 3 - 2 setup it might be a little more impressive as a cruiser engine. 1

rv1963 Posted October 5, 2024 Posted October 5, 2024 Nice start Bil, isn't that kit about 15 years to new for you, Lol.
customline Posted October 5, 2024 Posted October 5, 2024 (edited) You might want to to find a pair of "Thunderbird" rocker covers for that engine which would likely be salvaged from a wrecked square bird. Or...or maybe this would be cool ?? Wouldn't this raise an eyebrow? Edited October 5, 2024 by customline
