ModelcarJR Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 This old AMT kit has some issues. It took me all day yesterday to finish this one up. The front wheels were rubbing the front edge of the fender so I removed the wheels, which are pegged on the chassis and moved them back about 1/8" so they were centered. Since I broke the pegs, I had to drill out both the wheelbacks and the chassis and use some plastic rod for new pegs. The decals including the pinstripes were numerous and it took me all afternoon to get those applied. The only details I added were the wheels from the parts box, mirror foil for the exterior mirrors, and some painted embossing powder in the interior floor and package shelf to cover the six deep circle thingys. The engine is pretty basic and I didn't want to waste a pre-wired distributor or any other aftermarket parts on it. The paint is Dupli-Color Pure White and the interior is Krylon Satin Black as is the black on the body. So this one is a prelude to the much nicer Revell 71 Mustang that I am going to build as a regular 71 Mustang Mach 1 (the 007 kit) with a few additional parts from the parts box and decals from the Revell 71 Boss 351. Thanks for looking! ? I just noticed a a small pinstripe on the left side must have fallen off, so I'll fix that. 13
ncbuckeye67 Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 That looks really good! At least you built yours. I chickened out on mine, and once the Revell kit came out I traded the AMT version.
michelle Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 nice work this amt kit has also been issued as a 73 mustang at a couple different points in time under both the amt/ertl name and the round 2 name and as a 71 boss 351 under the the amt/ertl name and most likely this started out as the original mpc 73 annual and amt/ertl later tried to backdate it to a 71 with different grille parts and front bumper and that is why it has so many different parts at least it is not as bad as the amt/ertl and round 2 mpc knight rider kit which is horrible as they basicly kitbashed that kit badly a 88 gta turbo body a 91 gta interior pan and tail light panel and the original mpc 82 knight rider rims and nose and interior parts which one part does not even fit the 91 gta interior pan's center console
espo Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 Great looking paint and trim combination. Like the wheels and tires.
ModelcarJR Posted October 28, 2024 Author Posted October 28, 2024 Thanks, everyone! I appreciate your comments!
STU111 Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 This looks great. I’ve been tossing up colours for my 71 Boss 351, and this build looks so neat and clean, I think I’ll do mine Wimbledon white as well.
Bills72sj Posted October 29, 2024 Posted October 29, 2024 Great looking build. I like the color combo. I am on the fence as to purchase the Revell version.

I fell on the side of only building the Revell ones from now on. All the issues pointed out of the AMT and MPC kits over the years were not fixed and I have spent too much extra $$ finding better engines, engine compartments, rear ends, decals, etc. for the AMT/MPC variations before the two Revell kits were released.

If you are a fan of this generation Mustang, run (do not walk) to your LHS for the Revell kits. Both the 351 and 429 versions are out, and both are outstanding.
ModelcarJR Posted October 29, 2024 Author Posted October 29, 2024 Thanks everyone for the comments! I agree with everyone here that the Revell kits are much better and I am looking forward to my next build turning the Revell 007 kit into a standard Mach 1. I would like to build the 429 too but I can't run or walk to the LHS because we don't have one close by. So its order from the e-tail vendors and pay the shipping. It will take six months for HL to get these in, if they stock them at all. ?
ModelcarJR Posted October 31, 2024 Author Posted October 31, 2024 Thanks again, everyone! I appreciate your comments! Surprise - the 007 kit does have the 429 in it!
XYHARRY Posted November 2, 2024 Posted November 2, 2024 You achieved a great result from this mediocre kit. Really well done John. Cheers, David. ??
