LennyB Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Holy cow, I hadn't heard about that. My hear goes out to the family's.
iamsuperdan Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Saw this last night on the news. What's weird is that we had literally just finished watching an episode of Disaster Deconstructed on National Geographic, and it feature the 1982 crash of an Air Florida jet into the Potomac, right near Reagan Intl Airport.
johnyrotten Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Heard about this on my way into work this morning. Horrible for the families involved.
1930fordpickup Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Truly sad news. Prayers for all family's involved.
bobss396 Posted January 31 Posted January 31 That was at a very low altitude. The copter had no business being that close to commercial air traffic. From what I've seem on the news, ATC had contacted the helicopter twice and got no response.

LennyB Posted January 31 Posted January 31 That differs from what I was told by someone on the inside. According to recordings from the tower, ATC contacted the plane shortly before the crash to redirect it to a shorter runway. The pilot of the plane confirmed the change and switched course for the other runway. ATC then contacted the helicopter to confirm that it had eyes on the plane and the pilot of the helicopter confirmed he did. That was the final communique before the crash. One thing of note is there was only one person in the tower directing these two aircraft. In the past the tower was always manned by two personal. A lot of news speculation points as this being a result of Trumps firing a bunch of FAA employees last week. To me it makes sense to have more then one person take on this responsibility, but who am I to judge? 1

The other controller was allowed to clock off early. Edited February 1 by Ace-Garageguy 4
Ace-Garageguy Posted February 1 Posted February 1 (edited) Another crash, this time in Philly. I've been involved in aviation one way or another for almost 6 decades. This is not the way it's supposed to be. Edited February 1 by Ace-Garageguy CLARITY 1

They were on their way back to Mexico after a charity sent the girl there to have life saving surgery. Something catastrophic happened on that plane. It was coming down in a fireball! 1

bobthehobbyguy Posted February 1 Posted February 1 What a monumental tradegy. My thoughts and prayers go out to all impacted by this. I will wait to hear what the NTSB finds from the investigation. I remember a while back when the air show tragedy occurred and everyone was just sure of who was at fault.

Like you I will not speculate as to fault or cause. I just say what I observe. Just a horrible thing in both instances.
