bobss396 Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Funny.. I dropped an xacto knife last week. I was wearing flip flops. I didn't even look, picked up the knife and went back to work. Then I noticed that my foot was sliding in the flip flop, and I'm on a blood thinner. The flip flop was full of blood, I had nicked my middle toe. I left a trail of blood across my kitchen floor on the way to the sink. Washed it all off... wrap the foot in a paper towel... back to work. 1

Brudda Posted February 24 Posted February 24 I’m surprised that there is no follow-up after the build. My ship and tank models saw firecrackers and m-80’s boy I’m glad they did not see that. None of us would be alive. 2 3
OldSkool81 Posted February 25 Posted February 25 About the original post: did you ever notice that a lot of people from the 70's, 80's and 90's that ended up in technical domains, and furthermore pretty good in those domains, built model kits as kids? Wanna talk about modern hazardous things? What about energy drinks that kids consume as if they were the juiceboxes we used to drink... Or constantly having a phone or tablet in their hands that have been proven to be harmful... Seems like everything is harmful for you nowadays; I'll take my chances with model building. At least, it'll work my noggin, help me keep my dexterity, work my patience and maintain my spacial (3-D) viewing skills, all of which looking at a screen can't give you. 4 1

I've found since I've started building again, my creativity and problem solving on the fly skills have improved. I've always had patience to spare, anymore of those and I'd be a monk. 3 3

I'm pickin' up whatch you're layin' down; me being of the now generation I see a lot more of the energy drink consuption and high phone usage; never touched one of those drinks in my life thus far, and never had a phone until this past September. I'd definitley choose model building anyday. 4

Bugatti Fan Posted February 27 Posted February 27 Health an Safety Regulations, don't you just love them. i'm sure that they were devised to guide the stupid! As for over protective parenting, a sure fire way to produce risk averse snowflakes. Are we not in danger of convincing ourselves that the risks to our kids is more perceived than real? It's ok for kids to run around and get a few grazes to their knees every now and again believe it or not. They are in more danger surfing the net unsupervised than running around outside. 2

I'm pretty sure that one big reason I still have both eyes and all my digits after 5+ decades in a business that can be unforgivingly "dangerous" is that I learned at a right young age that being careless or not paying attention can have painful consequences, and I have scars to prove it. Fear-based parenting produces young people who are not only risk-averse, but also incapable of recognizing potential risk in the physical world and behaving in a way that would minimize it. Watching "fail" vids on yootoob pretty much proves what happens when people who don't learn to think about how things can go wrong are released into reality. 1
rattle can man Posted February 27 Posted February 27 The Surgeon General needs to put out this message: Warning: Life can cause death. Breathing means you can inhale things from the air, natural or manmade that can kill you; eating and drinking means you can ingest things that can kill you (natural or manmade); existing means you are constantly exposed to radiation that can kill you. Life is short. Enjoy it. 3 1
