Fantom Posted March 4 Posted March 4 (edited) Seeing reports he has passed. Very sad news. Another icon lost. Edited March 4 by Fantom 2
stitchdup Posted March 4 Posted March 4 is true or is it part of the ongoing scam trying to raise money for him? i've not seen it on any car sites yet so some sources are needed. his instagram says nothing about it
stitchdup Posted March 4 Posted March 4 Sadly it looks like its true but we can be glad we got the chance to be inspired by him and his ideas that gave us so many more customisers to carry on his legacy. RIP Gene, may everyday be a school day 2 2
DJMar Posted March 4 Posted March 4 (edited) Very sad and very true. RIP Gene, a true genius. Thank you for all the inspiration over the last 70+ years. https://www.autoweek.com/news/a64040173/gene-winfield-custom-car-icon-obituary/ Edited March 4 by DJMar 2 1
wrenchr Posted March 5 Posted March 5 Wow sad, he did live a long life, seen him many times at the Autorama chopping roofs and other customizing things. RIP! 2
Ace-Garageguy Posted March 5 Posted March 5 Few men live their entire lives doing work they love. Besides being a master craftsman and designer, he worked hard to share his knowledge with others to help them develop their own skills. I wish I'd met him, but I'll never forget him. 3

Fortunately he left behind many instructional videos demonstrating not only correct techniques but his amazing craftsmanship. He was very articulate. An amazing life. RIP 😢 1
Chuckyg1 Posted March 6 Posted March 6 Gene Winfield is my favorite of all the pioneers of custom Automotive fabrication. as Ace said if you can do what you love as long as gene has, you've lived a good life. Anyone familiar with full custom garage has seen how he inspired Ian Roussel. And he will continue to inspire custom fabricators for years to come. Like George Barris, the Alexander Brothers, Norm Grabowski, etc. he will be missed. Rest in peace Gene. Let's see what you can do with one of heavens chariots. 3 1
rattle can man Posted March 6 Posted March 6 R.I.P. Gene. He was right up there with Watson and Bill Hines. I never met him, but I remember him flagging the run-whatcha-brung drags at the KKOA Salina show. Guess I need to get that '40 Sedan Delivery built OOB now.
Misha Posted March 6 Posted March 6 (edited) Sad news indeed. A giant of the Kustom world. I first learned of him by looking at the model kit boxes with illustrations of his custom versions of the subject. That was in the early 60s and was supplanted by pouring over Rod & Custom, Hot Rod, Street Rodder and a host of other magazines that have bit the dust. In the early days there was a close association between the leading Kustomizers and kit companies with such names as the Alexander brothers, Barris, and Big Daddy involved with kit designs that offered a multitude of additional parts to enable modellers to execute their own imaginative versions. Rest in peace Gene, may you grace the hallways of Hot Rod Heaven and thank you for all your elegant designs. Edited March 6 by Misha Ad Photo 3
Phildaupho Posted March 6 Posted March 6 He was long one of my favourite customizer and was also a great person. He was always there until now. It seemed like he was going to live for ever and he certainly gave it a good shot. What an incredible life he had. RIP
