bobthehobbyguy Posted March 9 Posted March 9 interesting. In my opinion the tamiya wins. one of the biggest drawbacks of the Rustoleum is the drying time.
StevenGuthmiller Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Yeah, I don't even have to watch the video to know the answer to this question. Steve 3 1 4
Mark Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Comparison? None at all. Save the Rustoleum for the rusty lawn chairs. 1

We understand that some claim to use it all of the time with no issues, but in terms of ease of use along with far less potential problems, the Tamiya paint is undoubtedly superior for our purposes. The fact remains that problems when using Rustoleum paint far outweigh problems with Tamiya. As I’ve said before, all that one has to do is spend a few minutes checking out the Facebook modeling groups to verify that fact. It’s just a much more difficult product to get right. Steve
peteski Posted March 9 Posted March 9 This is just like the recently started thread on which is the best airbrush. So many different paints out there, so many different modelers preferring one brand of paint over the other (for various reasons). In the end each of us has to decide on our own what works for us. And of course if you have been a modeler for a long time you know that even with your favorite brand, paint formulas can change and might fall out of favor. 1

Steve im old school. i been using Rustoleum paints for many years. i know how it sprays. i know the tips clog up, they do to. they is a 1 800 # on the can you can call they will send you extra tips . why would i want to change paint if it works for me..kinda like a good wife why swap her out..everyone talks about Tamiya paint thats why everyone buys it and all its products. the reason Rustoleum has a bad name people like to run their mouth on hear say 90 % never even tried it. you use the paint brand you like but dont try to get me to change. i like what i use just fine and get way more fore my money.. 1
bobss396 Posted March 10 Posted March 10 I used to swear up and down that NOBODY can do a decent paint job with the OG Testors enamel cabs. Until I met Barry Fadden (RIP) and he had a couple of street rods that were shot with Testors... show winners 🏆. So with some patience, a bit of a learning curve and a dehydrator... it may work out. I should try it on a scrap body. I know I have a can of Rustoleum here somewhere...

I am a guy who believes what ever you use is great. It was just a test, I was impressed with the shine on the Rustoleum. 2

Yes, he was a god friend and a great modeler using old-school Testors paints. He did win quite few awards for his models. Here are couple photos of Barry's models taken by me from our club's website. I am posting links because our website does not have https (secure certificate) and many browsers will not display them if I show them embedded in the message. Here's the thing. I don't use Tamiya or Rustoleum paints, and yes, I have used them both. But when the topic arises, for the sake of those who might not be familiar with either one, I recommend Tamiya because I have used both, and I know which is a better product, and which one a novice is likely to have less problems with. I don't care what paint people use. Never have, and never will. But when the comparison is raised, I'm going to offer what my experience has been, regardless if I ruffle any feathers or not. I've seen instances when people have had unflattering things to say about my paint preferences too. Does it bother me?........Nope. Steve 1
eran_k Posted March 10 Posted March 10 how about the "higher" quality graffiti sprays like MNT 84 or Montana gold, will they be better than rustoleum? just wondering because where i live i cant get Tamiya sprays but cant get those graffiti spryas and they have a wide color selection

Carmak Posted March 10 Posted March 10 One of the biggest issues with Tamiya paint is "in person" availability. The nearest one to me that sell Tamiya is a 2 1/2hour round trip. Tamiya is a pain to get unless you live in the right place. There are multiple places I can get Rustoleum and Testors within 15 minutes of where I live. When I rattle can I use Tamiya. I have a collection of Tamiya can and bottle paints. I know I need to get better with an airbrush but after 40 years I still struggle with thinning properly so most of my work is rattle can. I also use lots of Rustoleum but almost never on a body. Often their colors work well as interior colors with Tamiya painted bodies. 2
VanGoGo Posted March 10 Posted March 10 There are no hobby stores in my area, I've had to resort to rustoleum. Very frustrating with unpredictable results ranging from crazing to lumpy orange peel, the 2X clear is the riskiest of all...like russian roulette with every squirt. Ive sprayed on test parts to make sure the paint will work...then had it mess up on the car for no apparent reason?! So, I end up spending alot of extra time to scuff-n-buff and polish hoping to get OK results. I use it with caution, heating cans in warm water, super light coats, letting it cure for weeks, and I would say while my results are better than this guys test video...rustoleum sucks, is a total pain in the butt, and takes the fun out of building models.
JollySipper Posted March 10 Posted March 10 I can usually get fair results with the Rustoleum paints, but you HAVE to have a good even coat of Their primer on! Don't trust that because the can says 2n1, that you don't need a separate primer......... This is their flat black primer with two coats of their high-gloss black. I didn't need to polish, but it might wouldn't hurt for me to..... I'm using the 'oleum on this project because the depth of the shine is about right for a vintage auto..... If I was going after a more 'showy' paint job, I would use DupliColor's paint system........ 1

GoGo the problem is not the paint its the spray tips and rustoleum know this. they is a 1 800 # on the can. call them and tell you need tips. the old cans you could turn upside down to blow out the tips new ones you cant. ether change them out or soak in lacquer thinner and blow out with a can of air. i get them to send me 30 at a time... 1

Steve that is one thing i will never do is tell someone what kind of paint to use or cut them down, laugh at them for the brand they using. but they a lot out their that love to cut Rustoleum paints down. i have won a lot of contest here in the south with my trucks all painted with yep you guessed it Rustoleum.☺️ 2

We lost a couple members to another club after covid. This was a big loss to the club. I am a big-ish fish in a small pond. Not too many get deeply into scratch building, except for my brother Will, he rejoined the club a couple years ago. We have had losses like Rich Manson, Tony Slice 'n Dice, others moved to warmer climates.
TonyK Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Adding my 2 cents to the subject, Tamiya paints work excellent for me when I want a nice paint job on a body or whatever. Makes me look like I know how to paint. Rustoleum works well on interiors and chassis, etc. when I'm not concerned about perfection. Glad I'm not the only one who gets the clogged tips. Thought I was doing something wrong.
Horrorshow Posted March 12 Posted March 12 I used to use nothing but Rustoleum. The cans were large and it was cheap, I used them for years but I started having issues. Black primer would end up dusty, some paints would shoot out a clump of paint, the last can I bought last spring had a terrible oil smell, since then nothing but Tamiya.
dmthamade Posted March 12 Posted March 12 You guys are making me sad. Tamiya spray bombs are not available up here any more, my one and only go to for spray bombs....😢 Don
