Have You Ever Needlessly Ordered Anything?

Well, I have the need to share a story on myself that only a fellow modeler / craftsperson could understand.

As mentioned elsewhere, I finally got the racing strips and body shell painted on a Revell 427 Cobra.  IMO, the end result was acceptable, and after it set up a couple days I went to paint the underside of the shell.  Yes, I could super tape up the model and spray it, but I wanted it to be a dark, non metallic blue.  Anyway, I chose to brush it, using Testors #1111 dark blue enamel. 

Well, I have a couple shelves of model paint, and pulled all the bottles of blue, but non were what I wanted.  Now I felt certain I had one, but "if it ain't there, it ain't there".

Ok, I could get in the truck and drive the 6 miles to Hobby Lobby, but there was no assurance they had it.  So as much as I was itching to finish the underside of the model and move on, I ordered a bottle on Ebay ($8) and waited a week for its arrival.

Five days later it arrived, and I went up to start painting.  As I sat down in the chair, my eyes caught some bottles of blue paint of on the end of the shelf.  They were in plain sight, but I didn't recall going thru them earlier.  So I pulled them down, and to my frustration (nice word), I found TWO (2) bottles of the Testor's dark blue - one unopened!

While wasting $8 was no fun, the fact that I wasted 5 days that I could have been working on the model hit me harder.  Funny thing, that was a week ago, and I still haven't painted the model underside.

Ok, hopefully I'm not the Lone Ranger on this one.  Does anyone else have a similar story to share?

Not really ordered but I did purchase a 6" T-Square knowing that I would need it sometime in the future; of course, very few of our builds have straight edges that would require a T-Square. Also bought a color wheel just in case I ever decide to create my own custom color for a build. Probably more but those came to mind.

That's how I ended up with three Revell Jag XKE kits (when I only wanted one).

I have a couple sets of 3D printed parts and wheels and tires that I ordered after I had totally changed my mind on the direction I was going with a build.

I've done the same with testors paints, and black paints in general. I must have 10 different variations,  and yet I still end up mixing a color.

I build primarily race cars, and if I found a paint scheme I liked, I bought the decals and the car.  I have too many decals and kits.  More than I can probably build in my lifetime.  Recently, I made a solemn promise to myself to break this habit.  When I leave this world, I really don't want to leave too much of a mess for my wife and kids to sort through.

I did the same thing with the Revell 29 Model A kit. I thought I had 2 or 3 for extra wheels, tires and engine. I realized I had 6!

I think we all do it to some extent. Once in a while I order a 3D part without realizing I already have one.

You can never have too many Revell '29 Model A kits!

Jim, we all try to keep that promise, it lasts for a while.

However, as I get older, I’m getting rid of those older less detailed kits. Keeping the higher quality ones.

I just hope that, after I die, my wife doesn't sell this needless stuff for what I told her I paid for it.

(Same with the guitars!)

For a while, our local Hobby Lobby was, for some reason, putting one on the shelf every week it seemed like.  I think I ended up going there every week for months, back when the 40% voucher worked every week 😂

My 3D stock is fairly well organized, so I can go through it easily. Now I add a tag with the date and who it is made by.

I keep the boxes it gets sent in, I add new parts to that box so I can sort by vendor as well. I mark the contents on the lids.

I should do a full inventory via Excel so I can sort and locate parts quicker. I used to do this for work, I had lots of back-up for projects I wanted to hang onto.

Bob, just this year I did buy a couple plastic boxes with dividers, like you I put a tag with each item as to where I bought it.

Need to go further, but it’s a start.

Last year I ordered some parts from Texas 3D and set them to the side, then forgot about them. A couple months later I ordered basically the same things from IceMan. While looking at the new order, I glanced up at the shelf above me and guess what?

It goes in line with our duplicate and triplicate kit buying. I used to have those squirreled away everywhere and I never knew what I had exactly.

I have one large box on the floor between my kitchen and dining room, all 3D stuff. The boxes are labeled and marked, I started putting dates on them.

The next step is to put numbers on the boxes, correlate that into a spread sheet so I can look things up before rooting through my hoard.
