This got rekindled in 2016 with the purchase of one Pontiac grand prix model after 30 ish years away from building that I purchased at a yard sale. Now I have 40 built, and 185 in the closet, and an entire room devoted to building them. I try to explain that others have so many more than me, and that building, and collecting are two different hobbies. However, she is not having it. She thinks I should back off buying till I get some built. Am I crazy?

Well, tell her that at least you are not paying a monthly fee on a mini storage full of models, yet!

Now that guy needs help!

Help!

LOL!

It's not a problem until you have at least 6 of every kit, and even then...

BTW, good on ya for having not one but two Revell Ferrari 308s in that collection.

No. You are not crazy.

I've got a garage full, over 650 and counting now.

Price Out an AR-15 and some accessories or a couple of sets of Golf Clubs. Let her do the math...

Or, take up Hanging around at bars and drinking. (Sarc)

Models are a cheaper, and saner alternative to many other Adult Hobbies.

Lastly , But a Fixer-Upper Classic Car. That will slurp the Budget A Thousand Dollars at a time rather than the 50.00 to 100.00 that are Model Kits.

You are not close to being crazy. But if it will make her feel better send me 2 of the stranger things Blazer kits. BAHA.

Reminder to all spouses that think we are plastic horders

. Yes we are, but other hobbies cost much more.

Oh dear. As we used to say, "You are so busted!"

I had a somewhat similar experience. My daughter and I had been accumulating models for a bit, and storing them in an out of the way (and sight) space in the garage. My wife goes up there to get something out and discovers both of our stashes. An astonished, "Where did all these come from?" may have been uttered. Naturally, in her eyes, they all belong to me. Explanations are initially dismissed as not credible but proven true when my daughter takes her models to her new place. We did work out an equitable deal. For every two models I build, I can buy one. This seems to work for both of us, and keeps things from getting out of hand.

I have two further suggestions. Figure out how long it will take you to build all the models in your stash. That will place its size in perspective. The other is to make an inventory. I used Google Sheets so I could reference it from just about anywhere. This keeps the duplicate buys to a minimum.

I had at one point around 80 in my bedroom closet alone. Now I have maybe 6 in there.

The basement is another story, about 200 in the boiler room, 50 in the finished basement side and around 100 that I take to sell at shows in a big closet.

I know of a local kit seller that has a truly psychotic amount of models and another former club member with a stash of 5000 and growing.

Freedom Sticks are a problem for me too. Like when she says, "Another box of ammo?" or "Don't you have a bunch of those already?"

The 1/1 car thing needs its own forum for me. This hobby she understands. She is a car gal, so I get a pass at those bad decisions.... Most of the time.

Nahhh, you're not crazy. I have 2 closets like that. Luckily my wife says nothing because she knows I'm constantly building. She comments more on where I'm putting the finished models.

I'm a widower for 11 years now. My late wife despised the hobby.

I have been dating a nice lady for almost 8 years, she likes cars, even models tattoos and firearms. She has a pistol permit and a couple of nice pistols. Ammo... I laugh when I read of an arrest somewhere and the perp's house has 1000 rounds of ammo.

Life is short. Buy what you want. That's what money was made for. That's how I ended up with 9 1:1s, 3 tractors, and a bulldozer lol

I have about 200 unbuilt kits. About 15 or so in the coat closet by my bench. Wife put the rest in totes and stored them in her she-shed. She's generally supportive.

Lmao yeah, 1000 is a good Saturday, not a stash.

No, you're not really crazy just misunderstood. At least here on the Forum you are in good supportive company. Some of us are fortunate enough to have basements that can provide ample storage for model inventories. Remote storage facilities are possible solutions to your storage issues, as long as their location and existence can be kept secretive.

The unbuilt stash is yet something I have to experience; if that’ll ever happen. When I started building my dad had a very small stash that fit in one box, and then I built all those and started buying my own from the store. As of now I have officially built 60 models, and rebuilt 6 of them, and right now have zero to build, with one coming by mail in a couple days. What I do is build them as I buy them; a seemingly good strategy that keeps unbuilts from piling up. Mind you I haven’t been in the hobby long so that’s probably another reason there is no unbuilt stash here, but really if you buy one at a time, and don’t buy again until one is built, that would keep down the unbuilt stash. But then you have a built stash so really either way it’s still space being used up.

Unpopular opinion: your wife is right.

My wife definitely thinks I have too many kits, but at the end of the day doesn't really care because they're in the gargae and out of sight.

I had to come to a decision myself. So I haven't bought a new kit in ages. Probably some point last year. I've bought some paint and supplies, but no new kits.

I've also gone through the stash, and have to figure out a way to unload about 70-80 kits that I still find interesting but will probably never build. That leaves north of 100 kits on my shelf that I don't want to get rid of.

I am sitting on 400ish, and now have started to build since things are in a better spot for me. I will also be taking 1 everytime I go out of town for work as well so that will help cut down the stash a lot.  I fear as another said... where am I gonna put them?

My wife makes quilts and some other stuff, so she doesn't say anything about my stash.

I got very judicious with my kit buying.

There's this whole Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) theme going, both at the swap meets, and between our own ears. That certainly drove some of my early buying. But let's face it, almost any kit we want to build is going to be available for as long as we might need it. There are a large number of modelers with massive stashes that aren't going to be around forever. Those kids will make their way into the secondary market and we'll be well stocked for the foreseeable future.

You’re only a short drive from Winnipeg….I’ll come and pick ‘em up.🤪
