Fuel Coupe Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 (edited) Going back to an age of drag racing that is very limited in replica builds. Ive decided to take on the Hollish Bros. Coupe Affectionately name The Outhouse by Art Chrisman. The Hollish Bros. coupe had only ran at a couple of events and and actually won two big meets and set an E.T. record then disappeared never to be seen again. This will be a long build because so many parts (including Decals) will have to be made. The chassis Research TE 440 chassis will be scratch built as well as the 38 Bantam delivery body. Heres the progress so far. I will try the get a little more done on the chassis tomorrow... Just a start. Edited February 24, 2010 by TxRat
Matt LeBlanc Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Good start!!! This is going to be interesting.
Fuel Coupe Posted November 10, 2009 Author Posted November 10, 2009 Thanks Matt. I know you understand my passion for the obscure. I know the car doesnt appear to be much and its certainly not a fire breathing nitro chugging fueler. But without guys like the Hollish's breaking ground with cars like this, guys like John Force would'nt be who they are today..... Gotta preserve history...
Rudy Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Awesome!!!!!!! Had thought about taking this one on after a recent article in Hot Rod Deluxe this past month, which is possibly your recent motivation for this!!! This will be one to watch folks!! The original engine from the car was recently discovered by a guy who lives not far from me. He has taken on the recreation of the 1:1. It set a record here in detroit at the 1959 nhra u.s Nationals....... I will be watching this one!! Rudy

While the article sealed the deal, I have been wanting to build this car for quite some time. I found a few shots of the original a couple years ago and fell in love with it. But with little reference the project went cold. With the latest issue of Hot Rod Delux and following the build thread on the HAMB I had all the reference I needed. I just hope I can do the little car justice...
1320wayne Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Shane, I'm sure that with your modeling skills that you will have no problem doing this project justice. This is one cool car. Can't wait to see more.
BigGary Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Shane, I'm sure that with your modeling skills that you will have no problem doing this project justice. This is one cool car. Can't wait to see more. Great to see you going ahead on this one. I remember several similar cars that were just minimal bodies on a dragster chassis. The A/Competition class died out years ago, but its great to build 'em in scale. Gary
Ryan Quantz Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 I too saw the article in HRD on this car and as soon as I saw the title of this thread I got giddy! I am really excited to see this one progress. You'll do it up quite well.
Foxer Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 There was just a recent thread where I saw this car in some 58-59 drag videos at Detroit. I love the look of this car .. the way the wheel cutouts don't match the slicks. Wonder if it was a recycled body or things "changed" during the build. Great choice for a build!!!
Joe Nunes Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Now this is going to be a VERY cool build...I'll be following along! Two thumbs up for starting!! Joe
BigGary Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Now this is going to be a VERY cool build...I'll be following along! Two thumbs up for starting!! Joe The article in Hot Rod Deluxe says its a much butchered '38 Bantam body. A/C bodies of that era were usually just some kind of body on a dragster chassis, as the Hollis Bros. car is. Take off the body, and you're in a dragster class!. Look at pictures of drags from the late 50s-early 60s and you'll see many variations on this build. Its like putting a Parts Pack T body on the back of a Garlits dragster. Gary
Fuel Coupe Posted November 11, 2009 Author Posted November 11, 2009 (edited) Wow Thanks guys for all the interest. Here's what I got done today. In a previous life My father and I used to build race car chassis so I was able to put some of those skills to work today.. All Scratch built Chassis Research TE 440 Chassis. Bernard Kron Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 As a fan of the whole FED era this build pushes all my buttons. So very, very cool. The initial moves on the chassis are grrrrrreat! Love the two yokes at the rear. Nice touch. Based on your previous builds I'm sure you'll be keepin' it clean, keepin' it funky and keepin' it real. Gonna love following along on this one for sure...
Guest arni Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 Very interesting,I will be following along too.
noname Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 I agree, according to past builds this should be fun to watch. I personally would enjoy a build like this any day over a funny car. Old School and unusual. Can't beat that.
Fletch Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 Shane, every time I run across photos of this coupe/dragster I have to smile. Without a doubt this is one of the most unique pieces down the 1/4 mile. With your skills I have no doubt that you will do this subject justice.
george 53 Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 Shane, today all that's left of Detroit Dragway(the Strip) are the aproach aprons off of Sibley road. There's an Industrial Mall/Warehouse where it used to be.This little car will be a GREAT tribute to a long gone era. Spend MANY weekends there in the late 60's till about 1971! If ANYONE can pull this off, YOU DA MAN what CAN!!!!
iBorg Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 I love it and will admit that I too had thought of doing this car. If you drew the chassis a pdf of your plans would be appreciated by many. You look like you're doing it justice!

Scott Colmer Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 Great subject matter!!! I'll be watching. I saw that artical in Hort Rods Delux. Very good. I also caught it running in that Ingenuity 67 grad clip that has been posting lately. Have fun with this one. Looking great so for. I would have to check, but I think the Mysterion has two LaSalle trannies. Scott
Rider Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Great subject, your makeing some good head way. The November issue of Hot Rod Deluxe has a 5 page spread of the rebuilding of that car, I just picked it up today. If you can't get it PM me your e-addi and I'll scan it in and send it to ya.
Fuel Coupe Posted November 12, 2009 Author Posted November 12, 2009 Thanks guys. I have the issue of HRD. The guy thats doing my decals is looking for some shots directly from the side of the car. No 3/4 shot so if you have any of those that would be great. I also need a Lasalle tranny. It was in the AWB studebaker funny car kit (miss deal) Any help there would be GREAT!!!!!
Bernard Kron Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Shane, Replicas and Miniatures has some very nice Lasalle transmissions in a two pack. you get one with a bellhousing and one without. Dave Picture at bottom of page 1...
