Well, I guess I'll start off by showing you the inspiration....

IMG_29171-vi.jpg

I saw this '55 IH pig roaster truck in a copy of Michigan Auto & RV a few months back, and it gave me an idea for a model build. Sadly, there is no '55 International in small scale (that I'm aware of), but I figured a Ford of similar vintage would work just as well!

Fortunately- I've got more spare bits from the classic old AMT '53 than Tiger Woods has bad press these days. These parts were leftovers from a '53 that had donated many of its parts to several projects, including the Retro Ranger. Looks like it's time for this ex parts donor kit to shine!

Here's the work so far. I plan on making it quite a bit rougher and crustier than the 1:1 IH that inspired it. My basic aim is for something that violates not only every DMV code, but many food safety and health code protocols as well!

Here I have whacked the top, and performed a quasi-sectioning job by raising the fenders. Those 'patch panels' are strips of 3M metal repair tape, with holes poked into them with a sewing needle to simulate pop rivets. The BMF over the 'welds' will be exposed after paint, so the areas resemble recently-welded metal.

Once the bodywork was roughed in (read:finalized), I misted the entire cab with Dupli Color textured paint, and covered over that with good ol' Krylon Rust Tough Flat Black. I also added '3M patch panels' to the roof.

I have a feeling this was the easy part... stay tuned and find out how epically and unbelievably wrong I'll be!

Looks like your off to a good start so far. My dad has a '51 GMC that he has put on a 1985 Chevy motorhome frame and it has a brand new 454 crate engine in it. He had to shorten the back of the frame by almost 3 feet it was so long !!! Are you gonna put the pipes on it ?

Not sure what kind of pipes I'll run yet, but I will tell ya this- no Chevy chassis or engine, for sure!

This should be interesting, to say the least. After the pig roast, when everybody has contracted food poisoning, you can hire yourself out to big companies to destroy their paperwork on site :D:lol: . 'Course, you'll need a big engine to stay one step ahead of the law and the health Nazis.

That's strange, I've looked through every copy of Michigan Auto & RV for the last 3 years and don't remember seeing that. It does however look to be an interesting build. Can't wait to see progress.

That is gonna be a great model, Chuck! Can you find a 1/25 scale pig to make golden brown and put in the roaster? Cool idea for a model!

A guy here has a roaster on a trailer with the words "Makin' Bacon" on it!

This looks like a great project and it is looking good so far. I am going to put a fixed body panel on my current project. I was planning on painting the metal finish but I'm looking forward to seeing how your BMF turns out.

Thanks guys- hopefully you won't be too disappointed by my progress!

I fashioned up a makeshift interior, once again using cast off junk that I beat up and weathered...

Hopefully I'm not screwing the pooch by showing the body at this stage, but oh well- here goes!

I sprayed the whole mess in orange paint, then weathered it using sandpaper, scratch removing polish, a wire brush, and some rust colored wash and brown weathering powder.

The second and third photos show a few of the doodads I slapped on- the megaphone (with the mic hanging out the driver window), the orange flasher, the air horns, the visor, and the mirrors (Jeepster heads with sewing pin arms). The 'Scary Jerry's International House of Pork' placards are just printed out on printer paper and superglued to teh doors. The front bumper is balsa, broken and soaked in superglue, so it will remain 'broken' yet intact. And yeah, that alarm clock says 2:33... as in AM! My garage is always open late!

The fourth photo is a ride height/stance/wheelbase mockup. I'll be running the wheels and tires from a Monogram F-350 (same kit that donated it's chassis to my '26 Mack, and it's bed to my Paystar CXT), dirtied and dulled up a bit. This is about the stance I'm shooting for- wheelbase is still up in the air at this point, and will depend on the kind of Pig Pyre I plan to procure for the project.

Still haven't settled on an engine... but I've got a few ideas!

That's looking very cool.....I like all the extra touches your adding in, as well as the "in the weeds stance".

It appears that the project is "cooking along" very nicely....

I think this is an old AMT annual kit dash. Now it's the MPI's dash! I used a '53 steering column, a '28 Lincoln Wheel, and a cassette deck from an old Japanese parts pack.

IMG_29451-vi.jpg

I made up the chassis from plastruct strip. The Batteries are from a Revell lowrider, and the fuel tank is from an IH Paystar.

IMG_29461-vi.jpg

A truck like this NEEDS a fire extinguisher, this one is from an AMT parts pack. I also made up housings for the AMT big rig kit sourced lenses. The S&S framed plate is an old-school 'white on blue' Michigan plate I printed off my computer.

IMG_29491-vi.jpg

For the engine, I settled on a '65 Lincoln 430. It's pretty much box stock, other than the aluminum carb stacks and '66 Galaxie manifolds. It probably wouldn't be the fastest truck ever, but the 439 ought to have more than enough thrust to move the truck down the highway at a pretty respectable clip!

IMG_29501-vi.jpg

And here's where I left off Christmas Eve... the basic truck itself was nearly done!

Christmas day, the saga continued...

IMG_29611-vi.jpg

I added some scratchbuilt mudflaps, and attached the taillamps. I also made up and installed a skid for mounting the roaster body.

IMG_29631-vi.jpg

I scratchbuilt some fenders from diamond plate to keep any errant embers off the tires... what about the gas tank, huh?

IMG_29741-vi.jpg

I finally decided, after considering using everything from the Mack Tanker body to a shampoo bottle for the roaster body, to just scratchbuild the thing from scrap plastic. The chimney is a Bic pen shaft!

IMG_29761-vi.jpg

Here I'm testing out the hinges- I'll need to add a screen and possibly some 'burning material'. Next time...
