envious8420 Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 i had my last cig at 1130 this morning. after almost 20 years the wife and i are quitting. told my doctor about this plan a month or so ago and he put me on wellbutrin to help with the cravings. 1 hr and 15 min. so far so good. i picked up a big bag of butterscotch disks to help. wish us luck.
MikeMc Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Good luck to both of you guys. Chewing lotsa gum may also help you....gives you something to do
AMT Pacemakers Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Hang in there, it does get better... been 27 years now. Smoked for 13. CCSS
Chuck Most Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 I've been gradually cutting back myself- I'm down to about half a pack a day (that's from an all time high- or is that low- of two full packs a day). I like to think of all the models I can buy with the money I'm not spending on tar bars!
george 53 Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Jim, This might sound kinda dumb, But I smoked weed for almost 30 years, and when I wanted to stop, I went to a rehab clinic for 30 days, and within another 30 days of bein out, I just started again! My wife suggested HYPNOSIS, I went, and I haven't smoked ANYTHING in over 10 YEARS!!! Beleive me, IT WORKS!!! While I was seeing the therapist(hypnotist) I also asked her to suggest to me to not drink either, cause I didn't want to replace one crutch with another. Since I hadn't drank in almost 20 years, I DIDN'T want to start again, so I asked her to plant a suggestion NOT to start. It's worked for me, and I've suggested it to my best freind so HE could stop useing drugs, and it worked for him too! It's NOTHING to be ashamed of, and it's NOT expensive, AND it WORKS! Just thought I'd mention it cause it's ALOT easier than goin thru withdrawal, and like I said IT WORKS! No muss, no fuss, NO BAD ATTITUDES and such. You can also ask for other things to be gone, OR start if you really want to change your lifestyle/ways!Just a helpful suggestion.
charlie8575 Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 When one of my friend's father stopped smoking, he put all his butt money in a jar. After about 18 months...a three week trip to England and France for the whole family! It really did add up. Quitting might not be fun; lugging an O2 tank around is even less so. A ride in the back of a Cadillac "station wagon" in a rosewood box is a few steps below that. Good luck to both of you! Charlie Larkin
Guest Johnny Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Just don't give up! I was smoking two+ packs a day in High School! My girlfriend (who would eventually become my wife of now 39 years) had asthma so I quit for her. Thought I was going to go nuts! Then I stsrted back up when I was in Vietnam but quit again in the almost year and a half I was in the VA Hospital. Never smoked since, well at least a cigarette. Although when I used to drink and others were lighting up I sometimes would still feel a craving all those years later! Kind of strange.
crazyjim Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Best of luck to you Jim. I started in 1969 after I experienced my first rocket attack just west of DaNang. Been at it ever since although I did quit for a couple of years - I was laser beamed at several acupuncture points and it rerally worked. It was worth the $125. The guy hit some other points so I wouldn't gain weight after quitting. That worked too. But then I was stupid and started again. Not smoking much now because I have to go outside to smoke and it's too cold.
Foxer Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 I smoked for 47 seven years ... up to 2 packs a day. About one and a half years ago when I retired I figured time to quit as those things are getting real expensive! My crutch is Chantix and it really does work. It's about a 2 month process on these pills, but it took the craving right away. It gets you pact the worst period and has not been too tough staying away. Sure the cravings are there and I have cheated a little, but it's working. Just another option.
Greg Cullinan Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 I wish you luck.I am at the point of wanting to quit.My folks quit about 4 months ago and so has almost everyone else I know.
trogdor Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Good Luck to you and your wife Jim I too have been cutting back, but I still haven't quit yet. I quit dope and drinking with no problems and never went back. But smoking is hard to give up. If any young guys are reading this please don't ever start, and if you do smoke quit now because it won't get easier when you are older. Of all the things I've done in my life, this has been the dumbest and most destructive to me.
envious8420 Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 well, ive had a few today (5) much better than 2.5 packs a day.
Eshaver Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Jim, I smoked for years , drank too. I wound up using The patch . Then too, I pourposely stayed away from my smoking friends . Having a good reason to quit helped too. Ed Shaver
vizio93 Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 My great-grandpa used to smoke, then one day he put his last pack up on the mantle. He would walk by it every night and every morning and see them there, but they would still lay there. This went on for quite sometime (about a couple of months) then he just stopped looking at them. One day my great-grandma was cleaning the house and saw them laying there. She opened them up and there wasn't any missing, so he never smoked one. It did have a layer of dust on top of them though . It just takes determination and a strong will I believe in ya
Custom Hearse Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 I wish you the best of luck Jim! I'm exactly like Trogdor... I was able to quit everything else with no problems, but smoking has got a hold on me that's tough to break. I was smoking 1 pack every 24 hours, but I've cut back to 1 pack every 36 hours. I usually smoke 1 cig an hour, and 1/2 a cig an hour at work.
envious8420 Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 (edited) thats what sucks about quitting and being at work, we can smoke anywhere in the shop but the wellbutrin is taking the edge off. i havent tried to kill anyone yet. Edited January 10, 2010 by envious8420

chebbysteve Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Dont give up Jim. If you truly want to quit and you are ready, you WILL be able to do it. Depends on your reasons...good luck to ya both... Steve
RichCostello Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Monday will be 9 months smoke free for me. I quit "COLD TURKEY" after almost 30 years of Camels. If you really want to do it you can, just throw away your cigarettes and don't buy(or borrow)any more. Hang in there, you can do it.
LVZ2881 Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Jim, I'm right here with you buddy!!!! I'm 32 and have smoked for 14 years and I decided last month that I want to join the Army(thats a whole 'nother subject). Unfortunetley, with my smoking, my lungs are not in as good of shape as they need to be for the running I have to do, so I decided to quit as well. I started Chantix this morning, and I can already tell a difference as my cravings (especially after eating) are less than they were before. You are supposed to stop smoking completely a week after starting Chantix and continue taking the pills for 2 months. SO far, I believe that The Chantix will help me achieve my goal. I wish you all the luck in the world.
Joe Handley Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Good luck on not smoking envious8420! Best of luck to you Jim. I started in 1969 after I experienced my first rocket attack just west of DaNang. beefheart22 Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Hang in there. I quit cold Turkey four years ago. Thought I was going to go postal during the first month, but simmered after the second and by the third it was pretty smooth sailing. Still don't like being around others smoking because they look so happy while puffing on those cancer sticks. Jerks.
gbdolfans Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Hey Jim, Good luck in this. There are many advantages to stop smoking. You save money to use on models, food starts to taste much better, and your wife will enjoy kissing you more!! You have to be careful with the food part as because it tastes better, you eat more and tend to gain weight. I have never smoked, but my wife did for many years. One day, about 15 years ago, she just quit cold turkey. She said it started to make her sick when she smoked. I can attest to the rest of it Hope this helps, and if you need to talk about it, just let me know. George
crazyjim Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 That was my plan Joe. Leave Illinois for warm sunny Florida. Right. It was 22 this morning going to a high of 45. Then down to 19 tonight 50 on Monday. The real bummer is that I have to to go Rockford in 2 weeks and I'll bet it'll get real nice and with snow and my flight out Sunday afternoon from O'Hare will be delayed
