James2 Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Why is it we feel the need to post a picture of our build in the same subject build of another? I am most likely guilty of this myself, but I just realized how RUDE this practice is. It total takes away from the original person/build being shared. Why not start your own thread instead of stepping on some one else! IMO
MikeMc Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Its called sharing.....a couple of shots of another similar build shows differences between builds....Not rude....but some people can be!! As long as it does not take over the thread.....
Guest Johnny Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Most times it is done just for demonstration of how something was done a little differntly. Or to explain how they did something similar on their like build. It's not like they are trying to take over the thread. It is more or less part of the conversation on or about the OP's build and we do it without thinking about it. Which makes it a rather innocent thing to do. Now if you just post and say here is my build and nothing more or go into an in depth description about it without being asked about yours by the OP then I would concider it to be rude! Personnally I like seeing others work along side my own in a thread! I'm not even bothered if the thread drifts off onto their build. I find it all of what our fellow builders do interesting!
highway Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 I feel probably everyone has done this to an extent, and as long as it doesn't take over a thread, I don't see it as a big deal. The only time I would see a problem is if it does take over a thread. If you think about it, look how many have built projects as an avatar. Even though it's not posted in the thread itself, every time someone with an avatar pic of their latest creation posts in a thread, it's there, right? I don't see a problem at all, I've had thread "intrusions" where someone felt they HAD to post a pic of their similar build even though I might not have asked about something requiring them to do so, and a few have actually been helpfully in solving future problems or answered future questions I might have had. On a similar note, though, I think with pics in especially the signature line, there should be a size limit or at least some unwritten etiquette used with those. Most have small thumbnail pics, but I seen one last night the pic is so big I thought it was part of the post! Thumbnail pics good, post size pics not good-get your own thread!!
Darin Bastedo Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Threads like this remind me of the spnking - no spanking debate that goes on in parenting discussions. it's often the context and the way that it is done that makes a difference ex. it's ok to give the kid a few swats on the behind to get thier attention but not to beat the snot out of them. here its the same thing, it's not what is done but how and why. In one of my posts I showcase the model of a 61 ford falcon in which I credited Marc Nellis for inspiring. He posted a pic of his falcon with a message along the lines of "you mean this one" and showed a black ford falcon done in his style. While I had not meant that car in particular, it did illustrate my point, but not only that. I got to see a build of his that I had some how missed. Did I feel my post was being taken over? no, it added to the discussion and added to my enjoyment of the board. On the other hand one time I had an in-progress post where I was showing the build of my 427 cobra, and someone chose to post the entire summery of Shelby production data. that was mildly irritating. The thread was not a research thread on real cobras but on how to build a scale model of one. Production statitics had nothing at all to do with the subject. BTW if you are the guy who did the posting, I'm not angry at you, and I don't recall off hand who did it, I'm just using it as an example. note I said it was just mildly irritating. Like I said we don't need to say "don't post pictures in other people's threads" we just need to be careful about why we are doing it.
Lownslow Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 i dont mind it it usually helps in the direction of the build
Dr. Cranky Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 I have to say I don't mind it at all, sometimes a picture will help guide you or show you something that will help keep you inspired. I don't think it's rude at all . . . I mean, it's not like you are going on there and saying, OH LOOK AT MY BUILD IT'S SO MUCH BETTER, etc . . .
James2 Posted December 12, 2010 Author Posted December 12, 2010 JP, that was funny! Interesting the many different thoughts. I believe if you post a pick of a WIP and some one adds a picture of their build it helps. If you post a finished build and some one does the same thing in your thread, it is detracting.
cruz Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 I don't mind it at all even though I will not do it to someone else, the idea of this forum is just that, to share and learn....
Railfreak78 Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 I don't mind either. Case in point : My 1974 Caprice. I did not know how to do BMF at the time and I was out of time to do so for my club meeting but someone posted a beautiful 2 tone green one with BMF and I was inspired enough to do BMF on my next model. I will eventually re-visit my Caprice and do it. I personally like to see what other have done to the kit I'm working on without digging for it. Now what I don't like is when I get side track on my own projects and start posting pics for Highway about a Lambo on my Caddy Monster truck thread
highway Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Now what I don't like is when I get side track on my own projects and start posting pics for Highway about a Lambo on my Caddy Monster truck thread What, are you like me where you have a one track mind that often gets derailed!?!?
Chuck Most Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 I don't mind if others post pictures of their models on my threads, but I usually won't do it myself unless it's asked for, or if my model has absolutely no chance of outshining the original poster's model, which is likely.
Eshaver Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 The only time I post a picture of something in anothers thread is to make a pont, not to dilute the authors origional work. If I have offended someone on this board, let me apologize here -in -now , mwanwhile I got to make me a coffee ! Ed Shaver
samdiego Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 (edited) I never thought of it as one-upsmanship. when I've thrown my 2 cents worth of pix in, the intention has always been just to share. If I see that the subject is (insert car name here) I naturally wanna show how i did mine. So I too apologize if any of my postings were intrusive, I just get excited about this stuff. Railfreak78 Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 What, are you like me where you have a one track mind that often gets derailed!?!? Yeah I'd say my mind wanders so much I could mix 60 cars into one of my threads if I wasn't careful
jbwelda Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 have your mom buy you some looser underwear.
Danno Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Man. Talk about wrong place at the wrong time. I just popped into this thread and they're talking about Brian's underwear! Get me outa here.
James2 Posted December 14, 2010 Author Posted December 14, 2010 (edited) have your mom buy you some looser underwear. Mother and I tried several times to call YOU for the loser undies but you did not answer. Must be busy gaming, texting, or face booking with your boy friends! And no the picture was not in any of my own threads, and I did say WE. The mature answers are very interesting, thanks for your thoughts. Edited December 14, 2010 by JAMES2
mrmike Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 I am just as guilty of posting pics of my similar model as anyone else, but lately I have taken to posting a link to the picture in my Photobucket instead. My thought was if I post only the link, it wouldn't detract from the original poster's model. Anyone else can either click on the link or bypass it. I would only post a picture on someone's WIP if it would help to demonstrate a new procedure and get them past a stumbling block on their build.
David G. Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 I don't mind at all when others post related pics on a thread that I start. If I'm building a '55 Chevy and there is someone else is building one too, feel free to post a picture. It's fun to see what someone else is doing with the same kit. If you have a tip on how I might improve on something I've done, and you can show me an example, post a pic. Most members of this community honestly want to see others improve their skills and have no wish to "one-up" a person who may have less experience or skill. I've learned more about model building from this community in the past year, than I have in any previous ten. I just see the pics as a part of the post.
Agent G Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 I've noticed here on this forum, folks tend to share ideas a lot more. I for one appreciate a photo with a comment like "This is how I did it". I personally will PM or submit the link, so as not to clutter the OP's thread. Goodness knows I need all the inspiration, uh help, I can recieve. G
oldscool Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 drives me a bit nuts too, but not nearly as much as quoting someones pictures when responding to a post posting pics of your builds can be okay IF the person requests or asked for it. an example here is where Jantrix asked for some ideas on how to do the exhaust on his current project. some picture examples can be helpful to him with deciding what he wants to do. another example is where the post says "let's see your '69 Camaro's, post them up". it's not okay when you post pics of say, your '49 Ford and then someone posts pics if thiers in your thread and says "hey look at mine too!" get your own thread You hit the nail on the head on all counts Dave.
