Mooneyzs Posted January 1, 2012 Author Posted January 1, 2012 (edited) Bob...I am using brass to get the thickness down as you mentioned but the shape of the seat isn't exact to what is given in the kit. the kit seat had ledges on it and the actual seat tins were butted right up against the chassis. Hopefully I am explaining that well enough. I did post pics a while back when I was first starting to modifying the kits seat, then I was wanting to scratch build a new seat. I do have a template that I will show you what I used. This seat work is a little more tricky than I was thinking but I am getting closer with it. Bill... Thank you for the kind words and for following along on this build. Ok Fellas, I have some updates on this seat for you guys. I is still a work in progress and am debating if i am happy with it or not... All I know is you need alot of patience when doing this... haha I am still needing to shape the seat a little more and sand the solder down and clean it up in a few spots. I am also needing to cut the holes in the seat for the seat belts to pass thru. Let me show you the progress so far. Here is the template that I started with. I started it out by taking the individual pieces I originally started with and traced them and created a single flat pattern to make it from: After creating the template, I mocked the template in place using tape to hold it in: From multiple attempts at making the seat you can can see how many times I created the seat with the one that turned out the best on the right hand side: Edited June 10, 2020 by Mooneyzs
Mooneyzs Posted January 1, 2012 Author Posted January 1, 2012 (edited) So with the one seat tin that I was the happiest with here is an upclose view of it after it was soldered. Take in mind that I will be shaping the solder down by filing and sanding it. then I will be going over it with a light coat of bondo to have things smoothed out in it since It will be painted black when done: Setting it in the chassis to see how it fits: View of it from the other direction in the chassis: Top view of it and I am still trying to work the corners a little more so they sit flush against the chassis, This is seeming to be a tough task. Its dang near close but may have to work it some more: Edited June 10, 2020 by Mooneyzs
vintagedragfan Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 I think it turned out awesome myself!!! impressive work work!
brett Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 That looks pretty dang good from here Chris. Alittle more massaging and it'll be as snug as a bug
Mooneyzs Posted January 2, 2012 Author Posted January 2, 2012 Hey Guys.... Thanks for all of the comments. I have gotten a little more done on this seat, so far I have done some filing and sanding to the solder and I am starting to add the slots to the seat so the seatbelts can pass thru the seat and it will then be ready for some primer. I will be able to start gluing the roll cage back on to the chassis and finishing off the roll cage. Stay tuned and I will have some more pics shortly. Gonna get to the bench and work on this more this morning and try to work on it most of the day if possible.
eviltwincustoms Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Man Chris, great job on making that seat! You have more patience than I do.. I would have stopped on the second or third try. In fact I think you are darn close enough to the contour of the chassis.. In horse shows and grenades you would have ringers or be dead on... Lol.
gasser59 Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Hey Chris!!! Where's those updates?? We're all dying here!!! LOL
Mooneyzs Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Good morning guys. I have pics to show you, I just wasnt able to get them uploaded last night. I will upload them tonight when I get home from work. I think I am calling the seat good for now. still needs little tweaking but am happy with it so far. I was also able to glue the roll cage back on and tonight I was planning on making 2 new tubes to add to the cage and then the chassis will be pretty much done other than adding the Dzus fastener tabs back on.
Romell R Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Chris i went thru too many pages to get caught up here lol! you're doing an excellent job, and im still looking forward to seeing it in person.
Mooneyzs Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Hey Rom... Thanks man. Glad you were able to catch up on this build. It has grown a few pages while you were gone . I am still hoping to make it up for the NNLs in february. I dont think I will have this anywhere close to being done for it for it but will bring it as is. I am thinking I may try and have my 1/16th FED done for it though. which means I would need to set this funny car to the side for a little bit. I have been really swamped with a project at work so I am hoping I will be able to take the time off for the NNLs.
Mooneyzs Posted January 4, 2012 Author Posted January 4, 2012 (edited) Ok Guys... As promised here are pictures from yesterdays progress. Sorry for the delay Here is the seat after drilling out and filing the hole for the shoulder restraints to pass thru: Here is the bottom and side after I had filed and sanded down the solder: Here I have started by adding the slot in the seat on the side for the lap belt to pass thru: Here I have added the other slot on the other side of the seat and the seat pan is pretty much finished other than needing to add a little bondo to smooth a couple spots out before it gets some paint: Edited June 10, 2020 by Mooneyzs
Mooneyzs Posted January 4, 2012 Author Posted January 4, 2012 (edited) Here is the chassis with the roll cage glued back on, Now all I need to do is add 2 more tubes to the roll cage area: Other side: Front View: Inspecting it and making sure it was looking ok...lol: Here I was test fitting the seat into the chassis after the roll cage was on: Edited June 10, 2020 by Mooneyzs
