Terry Sumner Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 During surgery, the Doc injected my knee with a pain block...some kind of long acting novocaine type drug. Well I thought it only lasted a couple of hours...you know..like when you go to the dentist. So when I came home from surgery on Tuesday I felt GREAT! No pain at all. So I thought, hey, this is gonna be a cakewalk! I even drove downtown to the drugstore on Wed morning and took the trashcan out to the end of the driveway. But by the end of the day yesterday pain was beginning to creep in. I have another friend who just went through shoulder surgery and he was talking about the effect of his "pain block" wearing off after a couple of days. So I called my Dr. and was told that it takes 24 - 48 hours for it to wear off. Well when I woke up a short time ago it was "painfully" obvious it had completely worn off!!! Holy shitake does this thing hurt today! I can barely walk. And apparently I can't walk on "cake"!
ra7c7er Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 I used to get cortisone shots and the doctor told me the same thing about them. Might even be what they gave you. have to be careful with that stuff though because you can't feel ANYTHING so you don't know if you are doing something to re-injure what you just got operated on.
mrmike Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 My wife is experiencing the same with her tennis elbow. The doc deadened the nerve to block the pain and after 48 hours, the pain is coming back. BTW, cake is for eating, not walking!
Dr. Cranky Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Hope you recover and feel better soon. Pain sucks.
bobss396 Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 On out-patient surgery, they often let you loose with a nerve blocker to get you home... and then the excruciating pain sets in! I had major knee reconstruction (knee is great today) and have been there. I was stocked with percodans for the first few days and Tylenol codein from there on. Drugs not hugs will get you through! Bob
paul alflen Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 ALL THE MORE REASON TO FINISH THE 1960 MOONEYES TRUCK!!!! I CAN HEAR IT NOW," HONEY ,CAN YOU TAKE OUT THE TRASH?" " PAIN IS TOO GREAT NOW DEAR, LET ME ELEVATE THE NEW KNEE IN THE MODEL WORKSHOP TILL IT GOES AWAY!!!!"
Greg Pugh Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 I was kinda wondering about that. You post that you're going in for surgery in the morning and then later that same afternoon you were posting like everyone was wonderful and I was like......"what kind of a surgery did he get again?" Sorry to hear you're in pain now though. Hope you feel better soon.
oldscool Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 I feel for you Terry. My advice is to drink heavily . Just kidding and hope you get well soon. gus
george 53 Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Terry, I know Gus was just kiddin, but DO NOT DRINK. You MAY get sooooo loaded ya fall on the Mooneyes project an mess it ALL up. an I wanna see it FINISHED!!! Hope your feelin betta soon!!! (DON'T go chasin no perps neither!!!!)
MikeMc Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 So Terry...that means he didn't tell you what will happen in 72 hrs.................. The pain WILL start to lessen You're thru the worst.....stay strong...do your PT and if the doc puts you on aspirin therapy...JUST DO IT!! B)
Jim Gibbons Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Sorry to hear about your pain. I have osteonecrosis, and it has destroyed my hips, knees, and left shoulder. A product I use for my knees and shoulder (my hips are too far gone for this stuff to work, and there, it is bone pain,) is Topricin. It's a homeopathic anti-inflammatory creme, and I'm amazed at how well it works. It's fairly expensive, but worth it. It also won't interfere with medications you might be on. Here's the website link, and it has a store locator to find if it's available near you, or you can order from the website. Topricin
Guest Johnny Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Unfortunately it is just like when you have dental work. The anastetic they use only "delays" the pain so when it does wear off you get slammed hard! That is why like when they did my hip the doctors assistant told me "do not pass up on the pain meds just because you feel good right now". His point was that if you do not and the anestetic wears off it is a real bitch to get the pain level back down with just the pain meds.
ffreak Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 (edited) Yeah you're goin through the hardest part now. It WILL get better though. I had a nerve block under my arm for a thumb reconstruction surgery and felt like my arm weighed 50 lbs. the rest of the day, but no pain. That is untill way up in the night it wore off and I was screamin for the meds !! Mepragan was my best buddy till I ran out of it !! Unfortunately it set me on a path of likin that kinda stuff too much for too long !! Bottom line, use it for the pain, but don't depend on it long. It will get better soon ! Prayin for ya and hope ya get well soon. Now ya got an excuse to stay at the model bench as long as you can stand it !! Edited March 24, 2011 by ffreak
walt francis Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Well I can feel you because I just had rotor cuff surgery and I wouldn't wish that much pain on anyone, just take it easy and do what the Doc says.
charlie8575 Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Not fun at all, Terry. Don't push yourself too hard and it'll heal. And George is right....don't drink too much. You could screw up your hard-to-replace annual! Charlie Larkin
Terry Sumner Posted March 24, 2011 Author Posted March 24, 2011 Been sleeping on and off all day. No booze. It goes like this: I have a bite to eat to have something in my stomach because if I don't the pill makes me nauseous. I take the pill...and it makes me sleepy so I sleep 2 - 3 hours. Then do it over again. Feels good to straighten the leg but hurts like you know what to bend it. So I've been trying to bend it a little at a time. No modeling right now though because of 2 things...the sleepiness and the fact that my model room is in my basement! Dang...gonna be a few days before I can get up and down those stairs comfortably. Which sucks because I'm dying to get back at Mr. Mooneyes! Just want to thank all you fellas for the kind words. You might think nothing of them, but they actually mean a lot! My son has been great...he went and got my laptop for me so I could have it here in bed...
Danno Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Godspeed, Terry! You're well on your way ... Take it easy, there's plenty of time to be active after everything heals. We've got your 6.
moparfarmer Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 I'am paying attention to all what everybody says. In November I have to go and get right knee replacement. Going for the spinal, they say you get drugged up before they inject your back. I'am listening to everyone before this happens. I'am shite scared.

Going for the spinal, they say you get drugged up before they inject your back. I'am listening to everyone before this happens. I'am shite scared. Nothing to fear at all...you will NOT feel a thing before or during your surgery other than a needle stick for an I.V. which is nothing. You'll be out before you can count to 3 when they administer the Propophal or whatever that drug is that's puts your lights out. You also won't remember anything either! It's later on during the rehabilitation that's tough. My surgery was only arthroscopic...3 small incisions and instruments jammed in there to do the surgery. Outright knee replacement is understandably much more. There used to be a show on The Discovery channel years ago called "The Operation." In one episode they did a complete knee replacement. It was fascinating. If you could find it somewhere and watch it you'd see in advance exactly how it works. Good luck brother!

Continued to abuse it at work(lifting and pulling stretchers, I was a paramedic for 29 yrs) guess it just took its toll.....Thanks, need all the encouragement I can get, now and when the time comes.
Terry Sumner Posted March 25, 2011 Author Posted March 25, 2011 This kitty hasn't left my side since I came home fom the surgery. It's like she knows something is wrong. Amazing.... Hosted on Fotki
Greg Pugh Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 I miss having kitties. They do have a sweet, sensual side to them. But then so does my goofy Golden Retriever.
ffreak Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 My cat was the same way with my hand surgeries !! She kept wanting to lay right on top of the cast and hand. Like she was saying " Here, i'll make it all better " !! And she also did the same when my son had intestinal surgery, laying right up against his stomach !! They are amazing and so loving...!
retrobuilder Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 I had to live in my basement for a week. You have to ice that knee and take your pain meds. I was on hdyracodon until this wednesday. I went to see the dr and he took my stiches out and know i am on the mend but you still have to rest your knee and ice it when you are not up and around. I am only on an inflamatory drug now. I had the same surgery that you had. Dont worry, its gets better! Rich.
