curt raitz Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 My Dad, Chuck Raitz a journeyman carpenter had a 1962 Ford Pickup in the middle 60's thru the 70's. I have been lookin' for the AMT kit of this truck, but not for the amount of money they are goin' for on eBay. A fellow member of our club, Larry Henley had the kit...so a few trades later and a little cash, it be mine Here's a photo of it in action: Gonna have to scratch build the rear bumper, roof rack, side boxes and find some western style side mirrors. the truck had a 292 y-block v-8 with a single carb similiar to this: The engine in the kit is fairly crude lookin' for a nice Y-Block with single carb...anyone know where I can find one? thanx
charlie8575 Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Nice project, Curt. For a decent Y-block, check out the AMT '56/'57 Fords. Those are the only two I can think of that have reasonable detail and are fairly easy to find. I remember reading that the engines in the first-generation Thunderbirds were a little crude, but I wouldn't want to swear to it. Charlie Larkin
george 53 Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Actually Curt, you could use the 57 T bird engine. It IS fully chromed but once you strip it it should serve your purpose. I KNOW it doesn't come with that style exhast manifolds, so you'd be on your own there, but as for the rest of the motor, you should be good ta go! hth. ;)
diymirage Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 im almost certain i have the for why block in my stash shoot me a PM and we'll work out a trade
Darren B Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Cool project you should scratch build the trailer for the truck that would be really cool.
Chuck Most Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 Ford pickup? Check. Unibody Effie? Check. Guy named Chuck? Check. Being built by a guy who always does killer work? Check. Oh, yeah. I'll be looking in on this one.
curt raitz Posted July 15, 2011 Author Posted July 15, 2011 Hello again... Here be the AMT 62 Ford Pickup Truck kit: Parts from the kit to be used: Only problem encountered, was the front grill and bumpers were from a 1963 Ford Pickup and the chrome emblems on the side of the hood were missing Modelhaus to the rescue...ordered and received a bumper/grill, hood with side emblems, new glass(windscreen & rear window) and set of nice red tail-lights: Fellow modeler & friend Steve Allemand donated a 292 Y-Block engine from a 56 Ford Victoria he had laying around: now it's off to the workbench and start putting everything together thanx for lookin'
DanielG Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 Love the shot of the engine bay, in those days you could crawl into it and work on the engine!
Chuck Most Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 That's for sure! Curt- was your dad's truck really rusty under the hood? I have a '66 out back (same basic doghouse/cab structure) I could shoot pics of for reference if so. Engine in it is an FE, but most of the little doodads are similar in the engine bay.
Sixties Sam Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 Looks like a great project! I like these tribute builds of real vehicles owned by family or friends. Now, if you're real ambitious, how about doing that cool camper trailer? Sam

charlie8575 Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 I think the Modelhuas' Shaste trailer is pretty close to that trailer in the picture. I'm looking forward to watching this come together. Charlie Larkin
Chuck Most Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 Hey Chuck No Rust...dad keep the truck in pretty good shape, i found the photo of the 292 engine i posted online Good- just checked my '66, and there's some underhood stuff missing anyway!
Alyn Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 I'm looking forward to seeing you work your magic on this one. I built a model of one of my Dad's old favorites. It really turns into a labor of love. Take your time and enjoy it.
curt raitz Posted July 20, 2011 Author Posted July 20, 2011 Started on the Utility Rack... constructed both side rails and crossovers: all the pieces put together: Utility Rack sitting on the truck: onto the tool boxes, rear bumper, etc thanx for lookin'
Dr. Cranky Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Wow, you are off to a great start. Details like this give a build tremendous flavor. Nice going. Keep it going.
Mooneyzs Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Curt... This is looking great and going to.be an awesome build.
charlie8575 Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Very nice job on the rack, Curt. Charlie Larkin
Raul_Perez Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Curt, How is it that you get more done in the middle of a move than I get done after being in the same house for over 20 years??? Keep up the GREAT work, my old friend!! Later,
curt raitz Posted August 3, 2011 Author Posted August 3, 2011 (edited) Just finished adding the side tool boxes dad designed and built. They ran down both sides of the bed with two locking hinged doors. He had a sliding tool drawer on both sides as well. This kept his tools locked and out of site. He also made sure a 4'X8' sheet of plywood could still lay flat in the bed. I failed to catch a picture of the box builds before I primed the truck... Just sold the house and will be moving...so may be awhile before I get back to the bench (new one)...heh! thanx for lookin' c'ya Edited August 3, 2011 by curt raitz
Chuck Most Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 Wow, Just that ladder rack is a work of art! The total build should be sweet indeed!
