Hawk312 Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 I got tired of seeing this one sitting around, so I decided to throw it together quick. Nothing special going on here, just added ignition wires and flocking. No clear coat this time...just alot of buffing. It went together alot better than the `86 Trans Am, but it still had it`s issues with the bumpers and a few other areas. But it looks really convincing in my display.
mrm Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Great job! Yellow is not really an easy color to paint. That TPI looks really nice. I have been out of it for a wile, so if you don't mind me asking, which kit is this? Is it too much to ask for the box art?
sjordan2 Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 You do some of the best finishes and detailing in the hobby. Just beautiful. Did you do anything special to the wheels?
Adam deCoste Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 very very cool, you did a great job on this Firebird!
dougp Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 For being "thrown together" it's beautiful. Which yellow is that?
charlie8575 Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 A very nice job. I always liked that 1991-'92 mild facelift. Charlie Larkin
Hawk312 Posted June 19, 2011 Author Posted June 19, 2011 (edited) Thanks everyone! On 6/18/2011 at 6:05 PM, mrm said: Great job! Yellow is not really an easy color to paint. As far as I know, it is still available. It`s been re-boxed several times with a red and a black version on the front, but here is the current box art: Edited June 19, 2011 by Hawk312

The wheels I shot with Krylon Chrome paint, as I thought the kit chrome was just way to bright. The Krylon gives it a polished aluminum look. It also went on very well, IMO.

It is Tamiya TS-16 from the can right onto the bare plastic. About 4 coats total. Very unusual for me, but like I said, I was just throwing this together quickly.

Really all I did was just give it a couple mist coats of the Tamiya, then a couple thick coats, then a good rub-down with 3M rubbing compound, followed by meguires swirl remover.
Hawk312 Posted June 19, 2011 Author Posted June 19, 2011 Ohhh....and everyone, I am finding all kinds of wonderful uses for sharpies and paint pens. Amazing how much a wife, kids, and house will force you to become more efficient at car modeling.
redknight Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Great job! It reminds me of Bruce Hawkins (proprietor of Hawk's 3rd Gen parts) rare '92 Jamaica Yellow Formulas. I drooled the first time I saw them, and your model captures everything I liked about the real cars.
Hawk312 Posted June 19, 2011 Author Posted June 19, 2011 (edited) Just thought I would put her together with her "sister" in the display case: Edited June 19, 2011 by Hawk312
Janne Herajärvi Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Nice paintjob again, but i like that red better They look great together, that is sure
Guest Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Very nice Formula David! Looks sharp in that yellow! I have one of these kits and was planning on painting it yellow, but wasn't really sure about it. Now that I have seen yours,I'm definitely planning on painting it yellow.

I thought this build had avoided the dreaded "Kurse of Kit Krome." On another note, I know you like Detroit muscle, but have you considered doing a European vintage or sports car? I would love to see what you would do with a 1/16 Mercedes Gullwing, which has never been done very well before as a kit or a custom build by superior pros. I have enough reference that you could build a 1:1 clone. Edited June 19, 2011 by sjordan2
funhouse1 Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Absolutely no interest in those cars but when you build them that surgically clean you deserve major kudos...
