peekay Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 Thanks Donn, don't wanna be a model car martyr.
Junkman Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 That sounds like Jeremy Clarkson, when he's talking about American cars. -MJS Clarkson doesn't know a thing about cars.
Jeff Johnston Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 I paint a handful of bodies, and the come spring usually build something totally different that i had prepared... My paint is in my garage, which is attached to my house, under my family room, and somewhat subterranean. So if its 30 outside its still in the 50s in the garage...and I can paint in that temp with no issues at all. I have for years. I have a 66 Impala, Aston Martin DMS and 240 Z painted for winter projects. I also have to paint a 53 ford.... I bet I build one of them judging by previous winters
Agent G Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Fall, what we call fall here anyway, is the best time to paint. The humidity rises from say 5% to about 25%-30% which makes painting perfect. Yard work is practically non existent in the desert, especially now so I get plenty of time to piddle. I usually build from the stash all winter and regroup (buy) in the summer. Late December early January gets a bit chilly and wet, but the daylight hours are fine. It snowed here in '08, and that REALLY messed peoples minds up. All in all not a bad place to live weather wise. If nothing else, I'll travel to Phoenix and harrass Danno more often. G
Danno Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 If nothing else, I'll travel to Phoenix and harrass Danno more often. G Bring it on, dude! It was great seeing you (and the Sainte who tolerates you) last weekend ~~ too bad I got roped into judging or we could have jawboned more! {Congrats on your win. Loved seeing the St Louis '57 in person!} Don't forget - - - - GoodGuys SPRING NATIONALS in March and Desert Scale Classic 8 in April!!! PS: After the DSC, we're having a barbeque ~ and our club's monthly meeting and contest ~ at Casa Baker ~ for all the attendees. It's right on the way out of town toward Las Wages. And, by then Hollywood Jim should be resettled here in town, so I know he'll be hangin' with us. John Teresi promises to make DSC again this year; and there'll be a couple of gangs and clubs from California, a New Mexico club, and the White Mountain contingent at the very least. Some kinda amazing collection of talent and BS-ers! You'll have to stop by. You'll fit right in! And, you can have a personal tour of the 1/25 cop shop and firehouse! As the paramedics say ... Seizure!
crazyjim Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 (edited) I just turn on the heater in my shop. It's sunny here today and the computer says it's 67 and on it's way to the high 70s. Marcia opened all the windows to air the house out and she's going grocery shopping. I can't go out to the shop until she gets back. Edited November 13, 2011 by crazyjim
Agent G Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 DSC in April is firmly planted on my "to do" list. And yes Saint Mary of Gray will be accompanying me. For some srtange reason she likes you, and all the other degenerates we know. G
Dave Ambrose Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 I think we get even less winter here than the good Dr. does. But it does rain. I'm well-stocked with kits, paint, and supplies so I can hunker down during big storms and build. Painting gets to be tricky. I tried spray painting under the patio cover during a rainstorm once. Not gonna do that again. If I do anything now, it's in the garage. But other than that, I'm set.
Greg Pugh Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 The weather here stays pretty darn nice so I don't really have to worry about stocking up on painted bodies. But I'm going to FINALLY buy myself a permanent desk for just my modeling. I've wanted one my entire modeling life and I've always used a card table, kitchen table, coffee table.....whatever flat surface I can get my hands on. I find I don't model as much because I have to drag all of my stuff out and then put it all back away. It's a real pain in the butt. It will be sooo nice when I can just walk up to or walk away from my desk!! I told the wifey that it's going to be all mine and that I'm not sharing! I got my desk today!! I just got 'er filled up of all my stuff and I thought I'd pop in here to see what's going on before I get started and try my new desk out. I'm super-stoked!!!
Wagoneer81 Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Well, the Wagoneer's serviced and ready to go. I've broken out my winter gear, coat, boots, etc... As far as models go, I have several (almost three dozen) aircraft and armor kits in 1/72 and several 1/35 armor kits that I can do all the paintwork on with brushes. I have around half a dozen automotive and heavy commercial projects started that are painted and just need final assembly...
Dr. Cranky Posted November 14, 2011 Author Posted November 14, 2011 Winter, what dat???? The Big Kahuna speaks . . . from his tropical paradise!
Junkman Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Winter, what dat???? Counter-question: Whutz Summer?
Dr. Cranky Posted November 14, 2011 Author Posted November 14, 2011 I grew up in California where the minute you started getting those Santa Ana winds coming off the desert, you felt it. Like the heat in Vegas. Wow, too much. Florida and Louisiana heat are just about right.
robertw Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Windows are all sealed up, go in to get winter tires on the car tomorrow, snow shovels are sitting on the deck, parka taken out of storage..........oh you mean model wise. I model based on the calendar year so I'm just finishing up the last of my planned 2011 models. I already know a few of the projects that I'll start with next year but as I get my hands on new kits during the year my 'do' list may change. Next years list includes; the Revell Austin Healey, Ferrari F430 spider, Ferrari 458, a couple of airliners, a couple of Corvettes, an original Mini, converting a Revell Smart car into a convertible plus others to be determined. Since I live in a dry climate (all year round) I never have to worry about getting things painted up ahead of time. rob
martinfan5 Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 (edited) I got my pair of sweat pants and sweater out , so I am all ready for winter , heck one could still wear shorts here right now. As for models, not much really changes. Edited November 15, 2011 by martinfan5

crazyjim Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 Have you ever known me to be wrong, Dr. Cranky?
Wagoneer81 Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 Winter, what dat???? It's something that you have to tolerate if you DON'T live in paradise...
Darin Bastedo Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 I live in TN...I prepare for the winter month and a half
Tony T Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Our winter is unusually late...we've had September weather the last while...finally some snow in the forecast for tomorrow but not much and we haven't had the heavy frost and cold weather so it won't stay. We have 4 seasons in Canada...1) Almost Winter, 2) Winter, 3) Still Winter and 4) Construction. Our summer, er, Construction, is really short...this year both weekends were pretty nice! Budump tsh! I'm here all week!
