Guest Dr. Odyssey Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 At least what is the weirdest thing you have done because you are a car modeler that you are willing to admit or share?
martinfan5 Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 (edited) Hmmm, dont think I have done anything, is there anything weird that you have done? Edited February 29, 2012 by martinfan5
Harry P. Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 If you mean literally due to being a car modeler... I guess shopping for fabric (for interior and convertible top material) in the sewing section of Hobby Lobby. I'm always the only male in the whole department. Since the fabric is on huge rolls something like 3 feet wide, and is sold by the square yard, they must wonder what I'm up to when I ask for a 6 inch piece.
chepp Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Harry P., I can identify with "I guess shopping for fabric (for interior and convertible top material) in the sewing section..." Imagine being a teenager in 1970 buying lace at a fabric shop. I used it as a stencil for a lace paint job. It worked OK but I had a lot of trouble getting it to lie tight to the body. If I was doing it now I'd give it a light spray of adhesive and let it almost dry before taping it in place.

moparmagiclives Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 (edited) ...playing dumb when my wife was looking for her emry board ....man I feel better now, thanks . ...its not that I wouldnt have gave it back, or wanted it that bad......but when the primer can says "non sandable" its NON SANDABLE Edited February 29, 2012 by moparmagiclives
Guest Dr. Odyssey Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 After a while the weird looks I got buying nail polish didn't bother me so much. Maybe it helped that I wasn't wearing any. I asked my dentist for old tools like spatulas and scraper/scribers but didn't have any luck.
SuperStockAndy Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Climbing into my neighbor's dumpster to get a little piece of screen out.

Guest Dr. Odyssey Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Screen is great for so many things. I remember embarassingly asking my mother for old nylons to strain paint through. Kind of a screen, just more embarassing, at least I didn't have to go buy them at a store.
jaymcminn Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 It's just a hazard of this hobby. I've gone fabric shopping (lace for lace paint jobs and cotton flannel for polishing cloths) at Jo-Ann, "sanding stick" shopping at Sally, and stood in line behind twenty little old ladies with carts full of fake flowers at Michael's to purchase one little bottle of Testors yellow to complete a project after the hobby shop was closed. I've bought beading supplies, scrapbooking supplies, and beauty supplies, even though I neither bead nor scrapbook, and my beauty tends to be of the internal variety.

diymirage Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I asked my dentist for old tools like spatulas and scraper/scribers but didn't have any luck. ages ago when i was 12 or 13 our family dentist decided to retire over the years he had heard that i build models so when he closed up shop he actually gave me an old dentist drill with a few different bits i remember sitting up in my little room with the drill wired into a a powerconverter (12 volt output) putting bullet holes in my model plane as for doing embarrasing things for models, i cant think of anything not mentioned yet actually....there is one thing, i tend to take little tidbits from my job tiny scraps of aluminum tubing, screens, ink everytime i look at something that needs to get thrown out i get this look in my eyes and my boss askes me "gonna use that on a model?"
LAone Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 checking out the nail polish, buying emry sticks and buying a good set of eye brow tweezers....lols i says to the wife "lets go to micheals, the martha stewart flocking powder is on clearance!"
Terry Sumner Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Try to build a fairly complicated model in just 24 hours! LOL
Steve Keck Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Asking a good friend to make custom decals the night before a contest and then applying those decals in the contest's parking lot using the tailgate of someone's pickup as a work bench,
hotrod59f100 Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Looking through the nail polish at wal mart. me to lol . Usually when I need some. I invite my niece as I'm a single guy . pulse it gives her an excuse to buy some to.
slantasaurus Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 About 15 years ago I was visiting the Museum in Auburn, IN before it was remodeled. There were only a few other people at the museum that day so I waited upstairs for a family to finish looking at the cars then crawled under a 37 Cord 812 to take pictures of the chassis. I still have the pics and one of these days I'll build some of the 1/12 AMT kits I have and detail the chassis correctly.
Steven Zimmerman Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I worked at Channellock for 31 years, till I retited last september. Everybody in my department (100 + men and women) would save anything they found that they thought I could use in my modelling. Bits of wire, pieces of screen, even aluminium tags of machines going to the scrap heap....'Z'
Draggon Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Its not really wierd, but I bought a permanent brass coffee filter for the screen. I also have my friends save all their old tupperware, cans, plastic or glass containers, and all of my Son's Pringles lids make great throw away paint or bonds pallets.
58 Impala Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Going with my wife when she goes to the local beauty supply store, they have a big selection of nail polishes in pearls and metallics I can't get at my LHS. I get some strange looks until my wife explains why I'm comparing different shades of certain colors. They also have a good selection of emery boards in all different grit for less than a dollar each.
Crazy8 Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Well I havent applied it to this hobby but I know I will. Recently when I was painting the kids' airsoft guns I did the finger nail polish thing to engraved letters and I also was at walmart and talk to one of the ladies in the sexy underwear section and said "Ok I swear this isnt for me but I need fish net stalkings." lol She played nice and said "Oh yeah, right. I've heard stranger things". The I couldn't resist and I said "OK they are for me but Im not waring them, im using them for a pianing project." lol I love turning strange situations into fun ones...lol
Jantrix Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I bought a pair of silky ladies panties to use as interior upholstery.
Guest Dr. Odyssey Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 "I bought a pair of silky ladies panties to use as interior upholstery. " Did YOU act like they were for someone special, or you have the composure to admit it was for a car model?
