Casey Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 This kit is supposed to be out this month, and I found a few good reference photos of Bob Tindale's car as it is now, so I hope they will be useful for someone. Hopefully Revell has included some better tires than the last go 'round, as the semi-hard two-piece rear slicks were, well, not so good.
62rebel Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 i might have to finally build a purpose-built drag car.... showrod? i always thought the Crate was a beauty but never could rationalize it..... it's got so much going on in it... a buttload of chrome, eye-searing orange paint.. flip-up body... yep. going to need one of these.

RancheroSteve Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 I'm glad I didn't try to build this as a kid! It's a challenging, but satisfying project for an adult modeler of moderate ability. Remarkably accurate and faithfull to its subject, with lots of opportunity to add detail.

Casey Posted March 23, 2012 Author Posted March 23, 2012 Yes. this is typical of Revell's late '60s show rod kits- many chrome plated parts, and many of them small. I tried my hand at the "Demons" series "Chopped Deuce" version in the early '80s and failed miserably.

Ramfins59 Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 The body is great for making a chopped sedan street rod, but you'll have to deal with those fiddly door hinges. I used brass doll-house hinges when I made my version of Hell Rod, using this body.

Chuck Most Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I bought an original built-up example years ago, kind of marvled at all the delicate little parts (that weren't broken) and sold it online a year or two later. I've always been interested in the kit- I like the 1:1, and there are a TON of cool parts in this thing for all sorts of hot rod and racing projects.
IHSS Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I just picked one up on sunday. It looks like an awsome kit. Unfortunatly it was missing the front tires, and the chrome tree was broken right through the chassis and the front half of the chassis is missing. Got it at the swap meet so i can't bring it back. Oh well time to get another 32 and figure out what type of hotrod to make out of it.
Don Sikora II Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 The most recent release of the Orange Crate (the one with the resin hood from about 10 years ago) used Revell's solid one-piece M&H Racemaster slicks on the back, so I'd expect this issue will too.

novadose71 Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I built this resin hood version several years ago, but i replaced the resin piece with modified parts from Monograms 1/24 32 Ford roadster. I forgot to drill the two breather holes to mate with the air cleaners when the "hood" is closed, but whaddya gonna do. I am interested to see how they handle the hood in the re-issue. Hoping to get a couple more of these, one for all the great parts and one so I can build one of the earlier versions.

I have to ask, pictures don't show, & the ol' memory is fuzzy, were the rear wheels knock off type Halibrands or did they use lug nuts? I'm looking for a set of the front tires & wheels, & the rear wheels if they are of the knock off type for an early sixties Super Modified. Any help out there? What stopped me was when all of the chrome is cleaned up it needs to be replated. Plan to use alclad for the chrome.
