smellyfatdude Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 I wanted one of these for a long time, and also knew I wanted to try and create a replica of a 1:1 car that used to reside here in the city. Except for the fact that the real thing ahd a 390 and not a 427, I did this one up the same. The kit was still sealed when I got it. The engine came from the Revell Thunderbolt, and the firewall was painted red to show off the detail better. Other than some minor interior trim embellishments, it's box stock.
Rob Hall Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Sharp build...I love the '60s Galaxie...I bought a mint unbuilt sealed one of these about 10 years ago, the windshield frame is broken. Still haven't gotten around to building it...
Ramfins59 Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Great car Darcy. The first car my wife and I got when we were married was a used '67 Galaxie 4 door that we bought from my Aunt for $300 in 1975. I converted the convertible kit to a 4 door hardtop with the help of a good friend who is no longer with us unfortunately. I'm posting a picture of it here, with NO intentions of stealing your thread. I wish I could find another one of these kits.
smellyfatdude Posted March 20, 2013 Author Posted March 20, 2013 Nice conversion, Richard! Hard to believe someone could alter a ragtop and come up with that, but it obviously worked! And builds of actual cars, especially ones a person has owned, are a great subject!
slusher Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Beautiful build. Glad your posting over here now SFD...
Grant Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Purdy! Is the price on the box close to what you paid for the kit? ....HA!
Tom Geiger Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Very nice work on both the convertible and the 4 door sedan. This subject is one of the most requested new kits... maybe we'll get one sooner or later!
drifterdon Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Gorgeous build. My first car was a red 68 Galaxie convertible. I've loved ragtops ever since. Your's is spot on.
tomsheehy Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Very, very nice. Looks stunning. Another lost kit that needs brought back...or a new tool! Did you alclad the bumpers? They look very good, realistic.
Ford guy Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Wow, awesome SFD! (1 of) my holy grails. I'll have one some day, hope it looks half as good as yours. Thanks for wetting my appetite. Roy
Lovefordgalaxie Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 The invasion of the Ford Galaxies!!! Uhahahahahaha (evil laughter) We'll dominate the world!!! Uhuhahahahahaha!!!! (fingers on the evil mustache) Chevys beware!!!!!
TurboKitty Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 ^^^ LOL!! What a beautiful build, its quite the looker in red!
ChrisR Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Great model. Wouldn't it be nice if Round 2 was able to re-issue this kit?
S. Svendsen Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Wow. Talk about rare! Nice build up. Glad you weren't afraid to build it.
smellyfatdude Posted March 22, 2013 Author Posted March 22, 2013 Thanks everyone, glad you like my Galaxie. Yes, the bumpers were done with Alclad. The chrome on the front bumper had worn off in a couple of spots, and the back bumper had swirl marks under the chrome. So I stripped both of them, then shot them with several coats of Duplicolor black primer. Over top that went a couple of mist coats, then a good wet coat of Tamiya TS-13 clear. After twenty or so minutes drying time, I laid on four mist coats, and two wetter coats of Alclad.
Tony T Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Very nice! Would love to get this kit, as my Dad had a 67 convertible back then in Highland Green that I've wanted to build in scale. The convertible and the fastback are my holy grail kits...I want to build the Wendell Scott race car from the fastback. Maybe Round2 will see fit to release both? Pretty please?
smellyfatdude Posted March 22, 2013 Author Posted March 22, 2013 If I understood it right, AMT altered the mold for the hardtop to do the ' 68 Galaxie fastback, back in the day. Whether or not the convertible molds survived, I guess only Round 2 knows. Even if all they have left is the mold for the ' 68 . . . . . ummm, yes please!
