Pete J. Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 You know what this really is is one of Harry's "What is it's." Man nobody would have gotten this one.
customsrus Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 I got one made by Airfix. Dont know how the body proportions are compared to the MPC. I might just have to open this one and see!!
Faust Posted May 3, 2013 Author Posted May 3, 2013 I think Edsel-Dan is right. I believe that MPC, Airfix and maybe Arii have the same mould. You'll love it. And by that, I mean you'll be repulsed! Sweet!!!
Lunajammer Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 In my effort to support a response to the other Rainbow thread, I came across this. This Ikko, Japan model kit sure looks like your old MPC kit. (Or is it the other way around?)
Chuck Most Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Anyone who has this model and does not like it, I will take it!! And I'll take the one Dan won't have room for...
blazefox Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Maybe open up rear wheel wells a little more, put on new wheels and make it a fastback and it would have potential
Faust Posted May 8, 2013 Author Posted May 8, 2013 Whoa, weird. That Ikko kit has a weird hybrid vibe about it. It has the body of the MPC (hard roof, weird headlight covers) but the chassis of the powered version. Generally, though, it seems to be the MPC. So, are there three, or four, versions of this? Two of each mould; one powered, one unpowered? To think of this much kittage for such a bizarre car, and yet I can't get a model of a 77 Cougar, and they made TONS of those...
Harry P. Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 To say that the aesthetic sensibilities of certain Italian designers working in the '70s/'80s was, um.... questionable, would be being kind!
Pro Wrench Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I'm assuming that car must have been designed during a bad acid trip.
Rob Hall Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I seem to recall there were other outrageous '70s show cars also kitted by Airfix..when I was a kid, IIRC they were sold in the US under the 'US Airfix' brand...I remember the Ferrari Rainbow and maybe a Maserati (Boomerang?)....
Casey Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 maybe a Maserati (Boomerang?).... Thinnest. Roof pillars. Ever!
Faust Posted May 10, 2013 Author Posted May 10, 2013 (edited) Whoa... those pillars are not just thin, they're almost ethereal! Man, there's no rollover strength in that thing, is there? Freaky... Looks like a cool kit, though! Edited November 4, 2014 by Faust
Zarana-X Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I just noticed the wheels look like the Hot Wheels 'Ultra Hot' wheels:
Ben Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Fascinating...I'd seen pics of the 1:1, didn't know it was kitted. The kit seems to be inaccurate as far as some details like the side windows... It looks like someone drove a Fiero through Pepboys!
Faust Posted April 12, 2014 Author Posted April 12, 2014 Interesting spot on the Ultrahots wheels! In its day, this thing was well-lauded, it seems. There was an article in a 1981-82 magazine (Motor Trend, I think) that called it the "most successful showcar ever". WTF? I agree with the Pepboys analogy. It's more like it was a reject for a "future car" from Back to the Future II, though. I still think it needs a trunk mounted laser cannon, like some crazy "future technical".
jbwelda Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 wow someone slapped a X1/9 with an ugly stick! A REALLY ugly stick! totally dig those rear wheel arches. jb
DirtModeler Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 It's odd. but not too bad. Kind of reminds me of a vector.
jbwelda Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 actually the finished model looks a whole lot better than the box art...that has to be a near first of some kind jb
Faust Posted April 21, 2014 Author Posted April 21, 2014 Now THAT is an eclectic collection of kits, good sir! I like it! I'm still not sure about this car. It would make a dandy speedboat, though... Seal up the wheel wells, open the roof, put a fishing seat between the headlights...
