I tend to build mostly "Replica Stock" cars of the 60s and 70s, so I'm a big fan of the old "annual" kits from that era.

A lot of them have been reissued in recent years, but I prefer to buy original issues if I can find them at a somewhat reasonable price.

I don't like the rubbery plastic used in the reissues from China, and many of these kits have a lot of "flash" due to worn-out tooling. IMHO, nothing beats an original issue kit manufactured back in the good old' days, when the tooling was new, and styrene was styrene.

That being said, I must admit being tempted by new subjects issued by manufacturers such as Mobius and Galaxie, and the occasional reissue if I can't find an original.

Like Lee, it comes down to subject matter and not necessarily the age of the kit for me. As a mostly musclecar and light truck builder, I have new releases and old kits among my stash!

I buy what calls to me and what I need, regardless of manufacturer or date of release. When a new kit comes out, if I've been waiting for it, I will buy a minimum of 2-4 copies, and go from there.

I consider myself a builder, never a collector.

Like a lot of those have already said, I build both, new and old stuff of whatever interests me at the time. Over time tastes change... I used to like only 20's, 30's 40's, 50's stuff and Street Rods, but for the past few years I've been "stuck in the 50's". I LOVE all those chrome-laden dreamboats. I will also buy resin kits of cars that are unavailable in plastic (for a decent price), and Promo's of cars you don't find in kit form.

I see, therefore I buy! If I see something I think is cool, and the price is right, I add it to the hoard.

Now the ironic part. For all the expensive resin and neat old kits I own, I tend to build my projects from kits built cheap, new releases and old buildups and junk.... something funny going on around here!

My last few builds --

65 Chevy Pickup - started as a new release, only took me 15 years to finish

61 Falcon Ranchero custom restoration - an original built up broken in pieces, given to me by a friend

60 Valiant Lakester custom restoration - ditto. A period build body given to me by a friend

New Camaro with T-Tops - new release given to me by my club for a same kit contest

Dodge Van Camper - Old broken body from the bottom of my paint booth.

51 Chevy Traveler Camper - Chevy from a parts box containing about two of the kit bought for $5 at a show. Camper given to me as an old built piece by Rich Manson.

56 Ford pickup bed trailer - Old broken builtup from the bottom of my parts box

Hmmm, I rest my case..

New tool releases, new reissues, modified reissues, old originals, old reissues, 'used' builtups...I buy 'em all if the subject interests me..

For me, it's the subject matter, rather than sticking with just new kits, or vice-versa. It may seem odd to some, but I like being able to get those kits done from old tooling from way back when--that's very much a matter of the subject being something that strikes my fancy. For example, back when AMT first issued the '49 Mercury Club Coupe--I hated bathtub Mercs with a passion! In fact, I would not have turned my head for most cars of the very late 40's through about 1952 or thereabouts--they all looked like old peoples' cars to me (guess what? I say that knowing that now, I am an "old folk" myself!). But, back to the '49 Merc: Finally, about 1980 or so, I bought one of the AMT reissues, built it completely stock--then gave the model away to a family friend who had one. Just yesterday, I was at Hobby Lobby, and what jumped into my hands? The newly reissued '49 Merc, which like the last one, will be built factory stock.

Maybe one of these days, I'll try my hand at some of the 21st Century cars I have in kit form--who knows>

Id like to second that being a factory stock guy myself of the 60s to mid 70s bodystyles but as long as its one from my field always interested.

I buy primarily new tools of modern subjects that haven't been done before. I don't buy many models anymore. I have previous issues of most models that are now on the market or are soon to be (several hundred). I will buy reissues/old tools if there is a specific part I need or a specific project I have in mind. Other than that, meh. I don't care much for pre-1980 models, but will occasionally pick one up if it's the right subject.
