It's like 7 degrees here in the Philly area. We are running the gas fireplace nonstop to keep up with cold. And this is a modern home with 2 high efficiency furnaces and Anderson windows. Just not meant to be Alaska!

Fortunately, my boss is a snow weenie, so anytime there is a trace of snow we can work from home. Not a bad deal at all!

Think I broke a valve spring in the '92 Chevy truck. Normally not a really big deal, especially with 275,000 miles on the clock. She's entitled to have something break.

Only problem is that I've been so tied up taking care of other people's problems for months on end that I haven't had time to do anything for myself, I've let the maintenance and repairs on my own vehicles slide, and the second-oldest truck is the only thing running at the moment.

I really wonder what gods I've offended to have had such an incredibly awful 2 years (you have no clue, believe me).

I doubt you've offended anyone, it's just the pendulum swinging. The last four years or so have seen a radical decline in my living and financial situation, but I feel that a corner is about to be turned. Hang in there, things will get better.

The past two years haven't been the best for me either. I spent a year out of work, after moving to Pennsylvania for the job that lasted three years. Both my wife's parents died, and we went through all the craziness of emptying and selling their house. And my dog Ted died last fall.

Hang in there Ace...If it were not for bad luck Id have none but I still fight at it hard as I can...never give up or they or it will win. I myself deal with 24/7 pain they can do nothing for, health problems, money issues,etc....things do get better in time hang in there.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it. I try not to whine about important things most of the time (they're private and there's nothing anyone can do or say anyway...it's just life), and a vehicle not running is small potatoes in the overall scheme of things...but sometimes when I get hit with different stuff back to back to back to back, over and over and over...things that wouldn't even come up if I'd been a greedy self-serving SOB instead of trusting people's honorable intentions, and trying to help some of them achieve their own dreams...so I blow off a little steam whining about the little things.

I'll shut up now, and focus on what's good instead. Time to try to make some changes.

I hear your car problems. Just got bad car news also. I have a 1993 MR2 turbo that is in wonderful condition for that year and age. I am finally getting sick and tired of the external head gasket leak and want to fix it. To change the head gasket, it is best if you drop the engine and transmission. That adds about $500 to the bottom line. Total $2,800. Now I am questioning my sanity and why I would do it. The car only has 130,000 miles and being a Toyota, it could easily go another 130000. I love the vehicle but that would be a substantial down payment on a new car, but not one nearly as much fun as this one. That brings my total major repairs over the last 15 years to about $10,000. I paid $7,000 for the car and if online auctions are to be believed, it is worth about $13,000. So what does one do? There just isn't anything else out there that would be that great to own without dropping $30,000 and that is over my budget!

Honestly Pete, I'd have no problem dropping that kind of coin to put new rocker panels on my Jeep, or putting a stoker I-6 with the Edelbrock Jeep head in it.......and it's 17 years old and probably worth no more than what Summit wants for just that head!

If it were me,I'd just do it. Yes, $2,800 is a pretty substantial hunk of money. Yes, the car may be "worth" $13,000. But if you look at it that way, you're already past that point. My question is- do you actually plan to sell the car? Are you actually planningot go out and buying another car? Going by what you've said (and the fact that you've owned it for 15 years already) I'm going to guess that the answer is probably "no". If it's a car you plan on keeping, it's going to break, and sometimes repairs are pricey. Nobody ever recoups their investment on repair and maintenance. If you're still enjoying the car, that's all that really matters. Money comes and goes, but how often do you find a nice MR2 at a decent price? Not often. I'd say you're already ahead of the game in that regard.

I just dropped a chunk of change on my 1996 Grand Caravan Mark III Hightop. Had the transmission rebuilt, some front end work, new fuel pump and the final was when I lost all the coolant, and it turned out to be the fitting to the rear heater system... which meant they had to remove the intake. All this work no doubt surpasses the resale value of this 200,000 mile vehicle. But we've had it since new and like owning it. It would cost more to replace it.

Posted

Sure it would cost you more money to replace it, but now you have a 20 year old vehicle with some new parts, and more new parts will be needed in the future.

So what? Replace it with something else, and you'll be in the exact same boat before too long anyway. The replacement car might even conk out while you're still paying on it... which is always nice. (Speaking from experience on that one.)

Drivers who think pedestrians are a in the way. I was crossing the street and some idiot wanted to cross in front of me on a two lane street. He wasn't happy that I didn't let him continue and cussed me out. Another reason I don't have use for most other drivers.

i get a chuckle from bicycle riders. (of which i am)

they demand the right to operate their vehicle on the Streets.

and yet, they'll blow through every stop sign possible and never indicate which way they might be turning.

all in an effort to catch the peloton....
